See, Hunter's deceased father, and him trying to live up to his legacy, is a big part of his character? Is referring to death or dead characters a no-no, or is it kosher?

I don't think you'll have a problem. I've had series published with the characters referring to dead characters fairly often without problem, even one trying to live up to the legacy of a deceased mentor.

Moved this to NT Staff Call, since it is more appropriate there.
Anyway, as others have said, death is okay in NT stories as long as you're not graphic about how the death took place. Having a character who died outside the story is perfectly kosher.
