Dear people phoning the office today,
That is not my name. No, that is not my name either. Yes, the former two are more common in this country. I am not from this country. You are lucky I am not using my even rarer and more region-specific birth name. Every time you say my name wrong, I feel slightly invalidated. Please say my name correctly. Thanks.

Me and my family are all fine and doing okay.
Though dang; I don't think we've had this powerful an earthquake for a while. I'm still getting a scope of all the damage. I woke up upon feeling it, stayed up while it was shaking, then went back to sleep. So I don't have all the news.

Tumblr just announced they're changing their Community Guidelines on December 17th to disallow adult content. From what I'm seeing on my dashboard, a lot of people are unhappy about this or think this is a bad move on their part. I understand some people may enjoy creating or consuming content that falls under that, and I especially understand it must be frustrating and inconvenient to deal with the automated system that's currently flagging some completely harmless posts as 'explicit'.
But like, unpopular opinion, but... man, if there's something that's always made my tumblr experience very uncomfortable was the number of porn bots on the site. It was something a lot of people complained about too. It was awful constantly being followed and having to block users with sexually explicit avatars or posts on their blogs. So if this is how they erradicate that problem, honestly, I'm all for it.
Maybe I'm biased because I don't think this change would affect the way I use the site at all. Maybe I'm not looking at it from all perspectives, but I was surprised to see the backlash, and people jumping ship over this. When I first saw the notice at the top of my dash, my first reaction was "oh, good!"
I guess we'll see what happens...

Ginz ❤ Yeah, I've been seeing a lot of criticism about the move as well from all sorts of places. The biggest complaints, from what I've gathered at least, are two things. One, that Tumblr is sort of going from 0 to 11, from having no moderation of porn bots, to disallowing any adult content because they got in trouble for the former. And two, that they're relying on an automated moderation system, so many harmless posts may and already have been flagged for no reason. I can understand criticism on those two fronts, as at the very least it is indeed a big leap to make in so little time, so it feels a bit reactionary and has already proven to have kinks that need to be worked out. However, I'm also not really behind the whole "jump entire ship" idea. Having no adult content would not affect my personal Tumblr experience, though, so I'm also limited in view there. Either way though, the mod side of me is just squirming at the task Tumblr staff have given themselves of distinguishing between inappropriate and acceptable content x3 They gave some examples of nudity that would be okay, but I just know that the line will still be fuzzy, and making those kind of judgment calls can rarely be a win on the moderator's end, especially on a place like Tumblr xD

Re: Tumblr stuff - Yeah, I'll admit, when I saw the announcement, my first reaction was, on the whole, "good." Because it's just... I didn't come for or want to see that kind of content anyway, so as printed, I don't really feel like I lose out on anything?
I can understand issues with others who were tagging things appropriately, with more art-like things, and with bots mis-flagging posts (which is already happening; I would prefer it if they had a better system for this before implementing anything). I don't really know what to say to them, though I do understand the issues. Way I saw it, it was done as a reaction to a lot of scrutiny after they found some seriously, really bad stuff. Especially for a site where you can and do have lots of people under 18. I think it is important that they enforce that.
Could they have done a different method? Maybe. Is there a better way to do this? Maybe. Is the flagging bot questionable? Absolutely. (And yeah, then there's the whole fuzzy line thing they'd be enforcing. That gets muddy fast.)
I'm kind of just going to stay out of this one. It's not my battle, and there's a lot of reactionary-isms that I'd rather not be hit by. I'll wait until things actually break on me and in the meantime point out innocent flagged posts if I see them.

re:Tumblr stuff- From what I've read, previous attempts at automatic nsfw flagging have shown a tendency to flag some kinds of people more than others. One big concern is that any lgbt-related content would be flagged as nsfw. It'd be great if they did something about the bots spewing nsfw content that actually worked, and gave people better ways to report malignant users. But respectful users shouldn't have to suffer from incorrect flagging.

As a heads-up to any avatar collectors out there, Other III is one stamp away from a full collection. If you want to get the stamps before they become impossibly expensive, now's the time to do so. Also, the Mumbo Pango Stamp is already 15mil, argh.

You know, thinking about it, it's amazing how many bad apples does the Neoboards have. Neopets, always amazing at its moderation and maintaining a healthy and inclusive community.

Today, I saw a really, really nice and inexpensive scarf, and while shopping for someone else, thought some earrings looked really pretty. The former, I know I don't really wear scarves, and the latter, earrings are too impractical for me (especially in cold-weather environments) and might be too uncomfortable, but they also just don't suit me. xD
Instances like this can make shopping really hard at times. Just because an item is pretty doesn't mean it suits me at all.
Best thing I can do is buy them for other people so that I can admire it on them. Unfortunately, I wasn't sure if anyone else I knew wore scarves like that and didn't want to take the risk. Alas. Maybe it'll look pretty on someone.

Good: When I went back up to school, my uncle gave me cookie dough and a cookie sheet to make cookies. Not so good: He didn't give me oven mitts.

Oh dear. xD Generally, I just use a thick enough towel to resist the heat long enough to take things out. Generally one of my thicker dish towels work. I don't remember the last time I bought an oven mitt for that reason.
