My English teacher told my class that in a sentence, the following two phrases would be correct: I shall go or We shall go.She also said that the following is correct: They will go, but that We/I will go is incorrect. So, basically, for "I" and "we," you use "shall," but for "they" you use "will." It makes sense, but has anyone else been taught differently or just seem to always say "will," as I always do? You can't make a new word with shall like you can for will in "I'll," "we'll," and "they'll"--or are the I'll-s and we'll-s using shall, not will? I'm confused.

Shall sounds more formal and decisive. That's about the only difference I can think of.

I always used them interchangeably. Whenever I wanted to sound fancy or the character to sound brave or something, I use shall, but otherwise, for everyday language, I use will, and I've never worried about it. Hmm...

To me, "shall" is used for formal and err... olden times stuffie, and "will" is more modernish. Your teacher might be right, it's just that it DOES sound okay to use since we err... modern people don't always use correct grammar.
