Hostage
“We’re closing in on the target.”
Sims jumped over the trash can, knocking it down, stumbling, got back up and continued to run. The pursuit had been going on for the majority of the hour and the guards were getting tired, as was Sims.
“Give yourself up!”
Sims yelled back a curse and continued to run. Towards the gate.
“Get him!”
He quickly started to climb up it and, as guards arrived there, he was already halfway up.
“darn! Get back down here,” a guard said, cocking his gun.
“No!” he yelled, his feet thrashing as he got over the fence and jumped to the other side, falling down onto the ground. As he got up, a guard shot him, making him stumble over and grab his leg. After only a seconds’ hesitation, Sims started to get back up onto his feet, walking quickly, his right leg limping.
The guards had now gotten out of the Forum compound and into the lot, which was empty. Sims continued to stagger along, trying to make it to the main road, blood gushing from his leg.
“Give yourself up!”
“No..” Sims replied weakly as he collapsed onto the ground. The guards hurried towards his body. One knelt down near his pale neck and place a finger on it.
“He’s dead.”
“darn it!” a guard shouted.
“The killing’s are going to stop now…” said the guard who was kneeling down.
“Maybe…” the other one said, sighing. “I just…I just don’t think it was him.”
“Even if it wasn’t…”
“We would have killed an innocent person.”
“Sirius and Eri are missing,” came the announcement from Tdyans a few days later. “We have found an audio recording that the killer left in our office, meaning he or she is probably going through the air vents. Those have now been closed off. Now, we will play the recording…” She grabbed a remote from the podium she was standing in front of and hit a button.
This triggered a buzzing sound to be heard around the room. Soon, a voice started to talk. “I have taken Sirius and Eri hostage and have only one demand: I must be pardoned of all my actions, signed by both Patjade and Tdyans or these two will die and so will the rest of you. You killed the wrong person. Sims was innocent. Just scared and nervous after I threatened him. Now, meet my demands and we will make a trade. I will be calling you within the hour.”
“Now, it is our law not to comply with terrorist demands but…the stakes are high. And we don’t have time. Too many people have died -- another life cannot be spared. We must make a move and comply with the killer’s demands. The document has been made and signed and we are prepared for her call. We will not tolerate this anymore. The killer will not set foot in this forum again. Not to alarm you, but--”
Patjade quickly ran out on stage, a portable phone in hand. “It’s her.”
“I’m sorry, we have to leave. I will give you an update momentarily.” Tdyans and Patjade exited the stage together. They stayed in the stairwell. Patjade handed the phone over to Tdyans. She paused for a moment before speaking.
“Hello?”
“Patjade?”
“No, this is Tdyans.”
The killer scoffed. “Put Patjade on the phone. You’re a powerless tagalong.”
Tdyans shoved the phone into Patjade’s hands. “She wants to talk to you,” Tdyans mouthed, letting go of the phone.
Patjade nodded. “Yes?”
“I have further instructions.”
“What are they?”
“Not so fast. Hold up the pardon to the security camera on your left.”
Patjade turned her head left and nodded, reaching into her pocket and pulling out a piece of folded up paper. After unfolding it, she showed it to the camera. She quickly out it back in her pocket. “Is that good?”
“Good enough. Now, I want you to leave the document lying there. Leave and go back on the stage. I see one guard there and I’ll kill all of you with the push of a button.”
“What do you mean?” Patjade asked, adjusting the phone.
“There’s a bomb in the Lobby. Now get the hell out of the hallway. Keep the phone on. I’ll need to talk to you.”
“Wait.”
“What the hell do you want now?”
“How do I know they’re still alive?”
The killer laughed. “You’re going to have to trust me.”
“No. I want to hear their voices.”
“Very well.” There was some shuffling around on the other side.
Then Sirius’ voice shouted, “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you…who…who the killer is. I couldn’t remember. But it’s--” he was cut off and then he screamed.
“What the hell did you do to him?” Patjade yelled.
“Showed him who’s boss. Slit his leg.”
“I want to hear Eri’s voice.”
“Fine.” More shuffling and Eri came on the line.
“Pat…I’m scared. Help us. She…”
“Shut up.”
Another scream, this time Eri’s.
“Now…” the killer said. “Leave the document in the hall and leave.”
Patjade thrust the document out of her pocket and threw it onto the floor and the two exited, shutting a wooden door behind them.
“What happened?” was the first question that was asked when the two administrators came back into the room.
Tdyans stepped up to the podium and held up her hand. “We do not feel we should discuss what has happened for fear we may let something slip and…” --she paused to glance around the room-- “…get us all killed.”
“How?” asked Hu, yelling above all the other murmurs.
“A bomb is planted it here. And…if we say something wrong it’ll go off.”
The room was silent and a look of understanding and shock came over everyone’s faces. Then, from the back, a whisper came from a teary eyes Fj0rd. “Are we going to die?”
Tdyans shook her head solemnly. “Maybe…”
More silence. Some cried softly while others stood looking straight ahead.
A voice came through the portable phone Patjade was holding and she put it up to her ear. “Yes?”
“The document has been taken and the hostages have been placed in the hallway. I have a message for all of you and request that I be put on speaker for the whole Lobby to hear. Get the hostages and put them into the crowd.”
Tdyans followed the instructions when Patjade mouthed them to her. She opened the door and motioned a frightened Sirius and Eri into the Lobby. Everyone was silent when they came in and as they were put into the crowd. A few comforted them who were nearby.
Patjade was in the process of hooking up the phone to the audio in the Lobby. When she was done, she said so into the phone and went back into the main room of the Lobby.
A voice came over the intercom. “Ladies and gentleman, I have done this all for your own good and for a reason. To show you that you are not in power. People may follow you, thinking you are their leader, but you aren’t. You are a mere tool of me. I have done this to attract your attention. To show that you do not control anyone here. I have received my pardon and will leave. But you will not. Your wonderful administrators have placed a tight lock on the Lobby and they will have to open it themselves. You have thirty seconds to live.”
