Ginger - I reckon that hair should be darker. The contrast of the black will make the white highlight stand out even more, making the hair look shinier. Also, you could possibly make the highlight thinner - straight hair curves around the scalp, so the highlights should be very thin. When shading shiny objects, always look to see if it is curved like a cylinder or flat like a bathroom mirror. If it's the former, you'll need a thin strip of light; if it's the latter, it'll have much larger sections white. But I really, really like that tail! It's so detailed and well-proportioned and well-shaded! ...and I agree with komori, either every (important) thing should have an outline, or nothing should. Just out of curiosity, do you first colour in your picture and then draw the lineart on top? Dimitris, I'll get back on to review your picture, and I'm sorry I can't do it now. Okay, thanks for the advice I do agree with you on the hair. I do the lineart first using the paint program, colour it and then go over it again to make sure it's all even. I'm going to get myself a black marker pen though, so I can actually do my lineart on the paper. It will be much smoother because I don't have to use the mouse. Thanks about the tail by the way It took ages to do but was worth it. Heh, who wants to bet that my Draik Day picture doesn't make it? I'm so used to getting rejected that it wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Here's the first pic I'm going to enter ever. Any suggestions? I might do some shading, even though I am not sure that the moon creates shades... Well, moonlight does indeed create shadows. Nighttime scenes are usually more difficult to shade properly because colors change in the night. Everything becomes very unssaturated. And since you put Kreludor in there, and it doesn't look like a bright Kreludor (oddly enough) then you might want to put the shading from the fireworks instead. Though backlighting is also tricky business. The thing that bothers me most about your pic are those white haloes around the fireworks and draik. Is there any way you can get rid of those? Do you use Photoshop, perhaps? Because if so, there are ways to be able to get rid of that halo-effect. And Ginger, you should definetly try drawing lineart on paper. It is definetely much smoother than using a mouse. Plus, since you have Photoshop, coloring scanned lineart is super easy.

Since I am no expert in photoshop, I use a combination of adobe photoshop cs2 and ms paint. Do you know how I can get rid of these haloes? Plus, I'll make Kreludor lighter and probably do some lighting to the Draik.

I started out with a bit of moonlight shading. How does that look? Whoot! It's the first time I'm shading. By the way, do you have some tips on backlighting? It doesn't seem to look good.

Okay, finally decided to post this. It's a Maraquan Techo, for Techo day: Aside from a few late-term palette changes (including how the back rocks are closer color-wise to that of that ocean), this was done entirely in mspaint (including the original sketch), oftentimes pixel by pixel. Easily 16+ hours. Watch, it probably won't get in. But either way I love how it turned out. Now if anyone ever says "i can't do guud art b3cus i only have mspaint lol," I can prove them wrong =P

But why if you can draw this good, do you use MS Paint?! -.- If you want a free program you can use an online oekaki or download Open Canvas for free... Wow, thanks! Nah, I have Paint.NET, which is Freeware and can do a lot of the important things that Photochop can, and even has vector lines. I use it for a lot of my art, but every so often I like the clean, crisp look of pixel-thin outlines and lack of anti-aliasing. I don't really need layers for something like this. I've tried the Oekakis at Suta Ratio but I don't really get how they work... what's open canvas?

I can't live without layers...
Owww paint.net, I tought MS paint. ;D Good, else you really wasted your time.
Open Canvas is a free drawing program. It doesnt support vector, but you can make very artistic lines with it. (watercolor like, pencil like, etc.) And it has layers! Just search with google and you will find the url.

Here's the first pic I'm going to enter ever. Any suggestions? I might do some shading, even though I am not sure that the moon creates shades... Yes, moonlight certainly casts shadows! It's very harsh, and the shadows it casts are long and deep. For starters, I reckon you should darken the sky at the top, or even make it a gradient that gradually goes from that blue colour to black. Umm... and I'm not sure if those fireworks are working well. I know fireworks are tough, but it's probably best if they didn't have outlines, and their colours are a little too varied to look real. I'm not even sure if there are fireworks in neopia... but they do look vibrant and pretty Here's the first and only time I drew fireworks... note how they're brighter at the ends of those "arms" they emit (and the sky is darker at the top) The draik iteself is really cute. However, its legs don't seem to support its weight much... maybe if you had its heels more firmly placed on the ground and its hind legs more underneath than out to the side, it could be improved. On the other hand, if the draik is in mid-jump, its tail should trail behind it more. And I strongly reccommend you put a cast shadow on the ground, so we all know whether or not the draik is jumping or standing But it's real cute, as I said before. The ground - that grass looks a bit strange... I know you're trying to get dirt to show through in between the blades of grass, but grass usually grows thick enough to conceal it when you're looking at this distance. It's a completely understandable mistake, which a lot of other people I've noticed have made, but you seem a little too anxious to shade or draw in every individual blade of grass. Relax, and think of grass as growing in bunches or clumps. Then you can shade the clumps darker at the base and lighter at the tips, and maybe add a dash of yellow here or there. And you can use perspective on the clumps, making the ones further away smaller and less detailed. Heres an extreme example of grass growing in clumps (of new zealand tussock grass): www.cushlasvillagefabrics.co.nz/images/nztussockgreen.jpgHeh, my reviews seem to get longer every time I write them. Well, I'm sorry if I sounded mean or critical in those paragraphs above Just trying to help. Ginger - ahh, that might explain why your outlines are so... rounded. There's an easier way to colour in lineart in photoshop I've heard, which involves layers. First draw the lines in black on a white background (or get your scanned image), then set that layer to "multiply", then create a new layer and drag it underneath the lines layer. So when you put colour onto that layer, you won't cover up the lines! But I don't have photoshop, so I'm not so sure about my facts. Also, whoot, I hope you get a good marker pen

Thanks for the comments, Pacmanite. I understand that you are trying to help, so no problem. ^^ I followed some of your tips, well, except for the fireworks. I tried doing them, but I'm no good at it. At least I removed the haloes and made the colors somehow better-looking. The grass is the hardest part and I probably cannot improve the clumps now. I'll try doing some yellowish shades if I can, though.
