Considering that this movie is based on a comic strip, it ain't half bad. It just isn't half good either.
The worst part of the movie was the plot. Even now, I still don't comprehend it. It was just too confusing to merit any positive comments.
Still, the movie itself, while a dark one, gets its fair share of light moments. Hellboy, aka Red, is impressively played by Ron Perlman. Not that he gets any Shakespearean lines or anything like that, but he is the main comic attraction in this film.
They say man is at his most primitive when he's fighting, and this movie is at its most primitive form when people fight. (I never said that was a bad thing, though.) While there are some funny, car-crunching moments, it mainly leaves a lot to be desired. Still, I will say this: Perlman swings a sword better than Barry Bonds swings a bat. (The only question is: With or without steroids?)
Overall, this movie isn't that bad. It's got no awesome Lord of the Rings-type special effects, or Shakespeare In Love-type acting, but this one's a keeper. Who knows? Maybe if you pre-order it, you'll get a little Hellboy figurine, just like LOTR. That's as close as this movie can get.
