Considering that the most religious thing I do is observe Passover (which is still something), I wasn't terribly offended by it. However, especially near the end of the Amber Spyglass, the bashing of the Christians was petty. Though you have to admit, there are plenty of corrupt supposedly-religious people throughout the world....
So His Dark Materials was written to be an anti-Narnia? That makes a lot of sense. I think Pullman has a wider scope of the imagination then C.S. Lewis, and a further depth, but that richness can be a disadvantage as well.

I was kind of offended by the anti-Christian motives in this trilogy, but it was still a worthwhile read. I like The Subtle Knife the best, but the ending kind of bugged me. I had to wait for six weeks to get The Amber Spyglass before finding out what happens to Lyra!

I was kind of offended by the anti-Christian motives in this trilogy, but it was still a worthwhile read. I totally agree with you on that one. I liked The Golden Compass the best, though, as I remember. The Amber Spyglass was my least favorite.
