While we're still waiting for the Final Results & Prize Shop, looks like the Staff Tourney has ended and its Prize Shop is available. Well, no reason not to do that one now, one less thing to focus when the main results & prizes happen.
POINT SCORE: * Max Amount of Points: 61,038 (And looking at who had the top scores in all the rounds, while I doubt anyone would have been able to get the max amount, I think it's possible to probably have gotten the second most. I'll explain when I go over Best Team below)
* Lowest Amount of Points: 31,657 (Though here you'd have to be switching between three players in both Fowards and Defenders every round)
* Best Team/Points: Fae, Dingo, Ivy, Aesop, & Willow / 60,763 (Not only did they have the best total points, but aside from the first round all of them were the 1st and 2nd best (just 1st for the Goalie) in all the other rounds! It was only in the first round where Aesop did average and Kikocat was 2nd best; but by Round 2 Aesop shot up in points leaving all but the higher scoring Ivy in his dust)
* Worst Team/Points: Rizzard, Stone, Kakarot, Clammyhand, & CMA Forrad / 32,445 (Stone did not bring their A game, though being they're represented by a Rock Petpet was that the joke? Everyone else is a returning player. Rizzard improved a little, Clammyhand stayed about the same, but Kakarot and CMA Forrad did worst compared to last year. Now I'm not making fun (do you think I want to point out the MD rep is the worst Goalie?), I'm sure depending on their work some have more time to play than others, though if that's the case maybe they should give up their position to someone else...)
STAR PLAYER: Okay, just to get them out of the way, the picks for the 1st and 3rd Rounds are fine. 1st Round was Reliable Rookie which was Ivy and 3rd Round was Brilliant Beginner which was Fae, both good choices as they were the highest scoring players. THEN we get to the 2nd abd 4th Rounds.
2nd Round was Most Liked Player which was Sunpotato. In their reason why for picking her they said her last year debut was "frighteningly good" and her sunny disposition won everyone over. Look, I'm sure Sunpotato is a wonderful person and hardworking staffer... but WHO CARES! "Most Liked Player", even if you told us the criteria for Star Player how would we EVER be able to predict that?! Also, her last year scores? They weren't good, not by a long shot. Are they looking at the same scores that we are?! She did slightly better this year, but that's still not saying much. She not on the bottom, but she's below the average.
Now 4th Round sounds like a criteria which you may be able to guess, Dependable Competitor. Yet, instead of choosing one of the other three top scorers (Dingo, Aesop or Willow), they chose Weirdough. Weirdough's scores are fine, I'd say at or above the average, but that just further the question why him? Well, let's read their reasoning... his dedication to pizza and the game is why he was picked. Pizza? WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH BEING A STAR PLAYER?! And how is he the most dedicated player when there are ELEVEN other Staffers who scored higher than him!
Look, I get TNT want to showcase the other Staffers who aren't top scorers, but this isn't the way. Pretending they're "Star Players" just makes it feel they aren't taking things seriously, which at this point they should not be making people think. I'll get to what they could do instead, but let's get to what all those points are use for:
PRIZE SHOP: We'll start with the "Staff Team Prizes", the group of 18 Prizes which represent the Staffers who played. This year's is interesting as I'm going to assume they passed this by their lawyers as it has to be just edging on the line of trademark infringement: (Digital drawings of) LEGO Minifigures. Of course they don't use any of those words, instead "Building Block Figurine", but aside from making it look like them they completely copied the LEGO Minifigure style. It's cute, don't get me wrong, just feels weird (at least not without being connected to a promotion). However, while more creative, overall I would say they're a downgrade compared to last years which were books and all had unique descriptions. These are just Toys (aka Gallery fodder) and all have the same description layout (which is the first time they did that, all previous Staff Team Prizes had unique descriptions no matter how simple the item was).
I've long accepted (or at least made it my headcanon) that JS had decided that, since the Staff Tourney was obviously non-canon to Neopian Lore, it's alright if the Prizes in their Prize Shop was modern day technology (which normally doesn't exist in Neopia or is from Virtupets/Kreludor). So, this years non-canon tech? Just a straight up mobile phone. Your Neopet too can now spend all day with their eyes glued to their mobile phone and not going out into the fantasy worlds having adventure. Oh, and also the Petpet Office Background has computer monitors in it.
Not to be completely down, there are some neat (looking) prizes. There's a book, those are always nice (and likely what I'm going to spend most of my points getting). There's a TNT Plushie for those who have a macabre sense of humor. The Working From Home Formal Wear (aka fuzzy pajamas) look nice (though odd they're one piece instead of a separate shirt and pants). Office Supplies Party Decorations is certainly interesting as I feel there's some kind of story behind it. And we also have a handful of items which would have made for nice Neohome furniture, if a new version of Neohome 2 (or 3) ever comes to be hopefully they look back at all these items and make them into Furniture (or they could turn them into Neohome Classic furniture if that's still possible).
STAFF TOURNEY XVIII FINAL THOUGHTS: Look, maybe it's best to retire the Staff Tourney and replace it with something else. The Star Player thing had run its course where half the time they're just picking someone for randomness' sake. The Prize Shop's charm of referencing in-jokes around the Neopets Offices is gone, replaced with out-of-place modern day tech and bloated with the Staff Team Prizes. With the way the site is at the moment, I just don't think we need this mini-prize shop which is already limited on what Items it can offer and has been limited even further with the likes of Furniture no longer being made because Neohome 2 no longer works. How about next year we have Granny Hopbobbin have a AC Charity Corner drive, and instead of new Items she'll offer past AC prizes (and maybe some other old Plot Prizes). If you want to spotlight some staff members, maybe have them a mechanic where every Tuesday and Thursday there will be a staff member who offers to give a certain amount of double points for donating a specific kind of item. I could probably think of a couple of more ideas, but honestly I know it's not going to amount to much so just gonna stick with my Charity Corner idea and call these thoughts done.

I'm honestly surprised I got both Fae and Sunpotato right in my star player picks.

Well, both prize shops are out. If you're All Star, you're probably not going to like the fact that the top prize will cost you nearly all your points, leaving you with not much left to spend on the other prizes that you want.
They really should change the way the shop works as this is just ridiculous, even for All-Stars

Congratulations Virtupets for winning this year's Altador Cup! And congrats to Kreludor and Maraqua for getting 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Now it's time for all players to claim their prizes! And that also means it's time for me to give my opinion on the prizes:
* Altador Cup Tailgate Party Background (12,600 points): The Top Prize this year is a Background... taking place in a CAR PARKING LOT?!?! JS, HOW! HOW TO YOU KEEP MESSING THIS UP! THERE IS NO MODERN TECHNOLOGY IN NEOPIA, THIS INCLUDES CARS AND COMPUTERS! If you see any advance tech it's from the Virtupets Space Station or Kreludor, which also has a space/alien aesthetic so you know it's from there. I was willing to overlook this for the Staff Prizes as the Staff Tourney is non-canon, but this is crossing the line. And now with that rant out of the way, here's another! Who is this for? This is something that would be given out like for a Sign-Up Prize (infact I think it reuses art from the Altador Cup Dream Parade Background), not as the TOP PRIZE. Then again, maybe that's what they're hoping, cause from what I'm reading a lot of players can't even afford it. So no one wants it, no one can afford it, it breaks site lore, were you trying to make the worst Top Prize?
* Other Two Backgrounds: Well I guess these are better, though still expensive most won't be able to afford them. Zero Gravity Training Area (10,500 points) looks the "neatest" though not all Neopets fit on the platform quite right and the Yooyuballs all around may further limit ways to use it. Retro Altador Cup Field Background (8400) is a fun idea but probably has limited use which may not be worth the points to purchase it.
* Yooyu Wearables: Why does it feel like they didn't know what to price these and the Backgrounds so just shoved them at the end? Pile of Yooyuballs (5,600 points) are probably the "best" here as they just take the side trinket space so I can see a Yooyuball-based customization use it. However the Yooyu Plushie Foreground (4,900 points) less so, MAYBE could be used for a "plushie playroom" custom but that's still a niche.
So, TOP FIVE PRIZES are already a bust. Then again, considering what's coming up, these next prizes may as well be considered the top prizes (for one thing many players can afford at least one or two of them).
* Maraqua Yooyu (4,200 points): The Yooyu Petpet this year is quite unique, I like it! The Yooyu turns into a sea star (sort of looks like a crown-of-thorns sea star; better known as the animal that inspired the Pokemon Mareanie and its evo). It's pretty reasonably priced so if you have a Maraquan Neopet either still looking for a Petpet or wanting a new one, Maraquan Yooyu I don't think would be a bad choice.
* Album Items: Another FOUR Album items! TNT, people like to buy some of the cheaper items too you know, and not just as point burners once they can't afford the higher prizes. Also completing Albums is already a lofty goal already, especially ones with Stamps from Plots/Events because if they missed out getting them it costs several million NP to buy from another user. By having FOUR Album items you're not only making things more difficult for players who did participate but didn't get enough points to buy the two Stamps and Coin, but you're REALLY making it difficult for future Album collectors. More Album items means there will be LESS of each as players would have to pick which ones to get if they can't buy them all, limited supply of stamps means many which are redeemed are going right into an album making them more limited thus RISING the cost of each one; it's BASIC supply & demand! That's why there was usually ever one which was the numbered commemorative, MAYBE you could have two if the other was low costing like the Card. The Techo Fanatic Stamp doesn't even look that great, the Golden Altador Cup Coin looks just as bland, and did the card really have to have the hated Jelly Chia Goalie on it? BTW, why does the number stamp no longer have "commemorative" in its name; it was also missing from last year's number stamp?
* Mutant Yooyu Flail (2,800 points): I was hoping this was going to also be a weapon, Wearable BD Equipment do exist even if there's only like one set of them (and they're older Altador Cup prizes even), but alas its just a wearable. Well, if you want your warrior custom with a flail, this does look like one that'll make any opponent think twice before approaching. But worth 2.8k? That's for your to decide.
* Extra Loud Techo Fanatic Megaphone (2,450 points): So, the flail wasn't the BD weapon, THIS IS. I guess that is some Neopet logic so can't argue you there. It's pretty decent: 15 Icons Attacker (5 Air, 5 Dark, 5 Light) with 75% Air Block. Just one problem: For some reason it's Once Per Battle? This is the same issue the recent Solar Flare Gun from the recent Festival of Neggs had (and the low attack Icons, though being Once Pet Battle didn't help the matter any). A reminder that the last decent multiuse BD Weapon was the Roxtons Trusty Bowie Knife you got from the Advent Calendar (aka FREE, if only for a day), and it's also a 15 Icon Attacker (7 Air, 8 Physical) with a 75% Earth Block. the Megaphone is essentially a reskin of it, except the Knife is multiuse and the Megaphone isn't. Hopefully they change it to Multiuse (maybe along with the Flare Gun, though that one also needs more power; make it another reskin: 6 Fire, 9 Light, Blocks 75% Dark), if they do I would say the cost is fair.
* Team Prize: Headbands (49 points each): Huh, pretty simple, and also pretty strange. Why? Because someone had gotten the image of all the prizes (unfortunately the one I saw was taken down when the Prize Shop opened, for some reason) and in addition to team-based headbands there was also shirts & pants. So, color me surprised when there was only the headbands; what happened to the shirts and pants? Because, the headbands alone are pretty meh; at least having the shirts and pants would give an entire outfit for your favorite team.
And outside of that I don't really have much else to say. Some quick takes: * The Haunted Woods Yooyu Plushie is rather random. * That Bobblehead should have been Windelle... * I'll overlook the headphones BUT I won't overlook the VIDEO GAME; Yes it counts as modern tech. * BTW, why does the Altador Cup Trophy on the Video Game, wearable Drinking Cup, and the Megaphone have the old logo on it? You know, the logo for 16 team & each team was represented by a triangle? Its either the original one uses for AC1 & 2 or the one used for AC4, I can see Team Kiko Lake but not sure whether it has Kreludor (which would be AC1 & 2) or Shenkuu (which would be AC4); AC5 is when they introduced the current logo as Moltara was added thus having an equal number of teams again, representing each as just a square around the gold Neopia globe. * Mirsha is really popular with TNT, last year was a stamp and now this random framed photo. Note, this was with the other leaked prizes before JN's Most Popular Player poll ended, so it's not a reference to that. I guess she's Neopet's LGBT+ Rep, the Framed Photo description even mentions Gina (Mirsha has a Plushie, wonder if Gina is going to get one eventually). * BTW, no Paint Brush? And on that same note, no Vintage Jersey? While last year it was no big deal as all the Podium teams had one, this year Maraqua finally made it onto the Podium, they deserve a Vintage Jersey! * Also no past prizes, strange, that was a somewhat popular decision I thought. * Remember there's two books so if you're looking to profit be sure to grab a few copies of them, they're plenty cheap enough. * Trophies aren't anything really to talk about; last year's looked cooler.

Video Game I'll forgive because they've established Video Games as real before, when Dungeon Dash was released. They had a console and controller and everything in the commercial. Likewise Arcades are real too. I just want to agree. 4 stamps again? My bank account hadn't recovered from last year when they had 4 stamps in it.

Well, both prize shops are out. They really should change the way the shop works as this is just ridiculous, even for All-Stars Actually, no. Even if you got plain ol' All-Star you wouldn't have enough points for the Top Prizes. You have to get like near Double All-Star for you to get enough points for the Top Prize. As I keep pointing out, TNT, what are the Ranks for if All-Star doesn't mean its enough points for the Top Prize? Oh, and this of course means single All-Star doesn't give you enough points to buy all the Album items! Arcades are fine, they were established as how the Gamesroom worked (especially when they were physically placed in Roo Island). Cartridge consoles I'll also accept as that's how Daily Dare & Games Master Challenge is/was presented. But even then the video game consoles were made to look exaggerated, never said out loud but hints of possible VP tech. However the Altador Cup Video Game is clearly modelled after a disc, specifically a Playstation one. I can afford all the Album Items so if you like we can talk about making a deal, just send me a DM. Though personally I'd like to wait a while to see where prices settle.

This was how I ended up spending my 13,220 prize shop points. :3 I'll be selling the spare Techo Fanatic Stamp and keeping the other collectibles in my gallery.
Altador Cup XVIII Stamp (2,800) Golden Altador Cup Coin (3,150) Techo Fanatic Stamp (3,500) x2 Jelly Chia Goalie Card (175) Altador Cup Cookbook (53) Janitor Autobiography (21) x2
I also sniped the Zero Gravity background from auctions for neopoints. And with that, I feel pretty satisfied with my haul from the AC this year \o/
Also! I noticed something about the recent weapons they've been awarding through events.
Feel Better Soup - 50% heal AND blocks 100% air for a turn Shield of Faerieland - blocks 100% air
and now a dual-duty that blocks 75% air while dishing out 15 icons of damage?
Does this mean the boss of the next plot is going to be an air boss? o.O

Four album items again! Heckin wild decision-makin there, TNT.
I'm glad this is the year I decided to get double all-star, but not so glad that it cost the majority of my points just to fill out my album. Also went ahead and bought one extra techo fanatic stamp and that basically wiped me out lol.

If anyone's selling the coin and the ACVIII stamp I think I'd rather buy from a NTWFer than from anyone else.
I managed to get the Techo Fanatic Stamp and the TCG with the Player Everyone Wants to Punch at least. 2 out of 4 album items, for Rank 14.
Ugh. All Star should really mean "now you can afford one of each item in the shop". This is bonkers. I'm not even All Star but I think everyone knows what I mean.

So apparently the Extra Loud Techo Fanatic Megaphone was quietly changed from once-per-battle to multiuse. We don’t know when this change occurred, but word only started to get out yesterday. This means that as of right now, the megaphone is the item with the best prize points to Neopoints ratio in the prize shop.
It’s basically a 15-icon dual duty weapon of equal strength as Roxtons Trusty Bowie Knife, except it blocks different icons (air instead of earth). This makes it primarily a 2-player weapon, though this could change if TNT makes a boss that does massive amounts of air damage in the future.

Great news! Glad I didn't spend all my Prize Points (so far only bought 1 each of the high cost album items). Have enough to buy a few... or a few more stamps, maybe I'll see where the market swings when the next AC draws near and gotta spend my points before losing them. Hopefully they also update the Solar Flare Gun to be Multiuse. If they do it'll be an alright mid-tier weapon, nowhere close to the Void Blade but Fire & Light icons are good icons for a weapon to have.
