Hello and welcome! Happy Day of the Dead! You've probably heard of it, but Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday in which we celebrate and honor our loved ones who have passed away. We set up altars with flowers and food, and put their pictures on it, and welcome their souls back home for a day. It's very beautiful, and a holiday I love. However, there's a lesser known tradition associated with Day of the Dead that you may not know about! What, you thought you knew all there was to know about Day of the Dead just because you watched Coco? Please! (But do watch Coco, I highly reccomend it! <3) Anyway, the tradition I'm taking about is Literary "Calaveritas." They are poems written about famous people, friends, family... anyone you want. They're usually humorous, and can also be satirical. The theme is, of course, death. Death herself, or "La Catrina", always plays a role as a character. These poems describe how death comes for the protagonist. It may sound morbid, but it's a way to remember we're all going to die eventually, in a joyful loving way, if at all possible. I tried looking for an example in English, but I couldn't find one I liked, so I made my own. Here's a sample of what a stanza would look like:
Sound interesting? If not, no worries! Just post asking for a treat and I'll give you some yummy traditional Mexican candy! But if it does sound fun to you, feel free to also request a Calaverita written either about you, or one of your characters. (Please specify) I hope you had a wonderful Halloween, and Happy Day of the Dead!

How fun! If you want, I'd be okay with you writing one about Beatrice Bizelli. She's an adult, she can handle it.

I would love to have a Calaverita about my muse so I have something fun to read whenever my creativity climbs into the grave for a week or two. :D

How fun! If you want, I'd be okay with you writing one about Beatrice Bizelli. She's an adult, she can handle it. Alright! =D Beatrice is a really cool character, so this will be fun! Here you go:
Beatrice Bizelli
A most intrepid reporter, Beatrice was after the scoop, For she was a big supporter Of bringing truth to her group.
The interviewee, who many feared, Was thin and pale, aura of death. Bizelli had bravely volunteered, Even if it cost her last breath.
The two women talked and talked, Of life, and what lays beyond that, And Beatrice, to her core shocked, Stepped in on death’s welcome mat. Here's a treat for you as well! Alegría de amaranto. This sweet treat is made with toasted amaranth and honey. It may include nuts and/or raisins, but my favorite is just plain!

Ooh, I love this! I'd be happy to have a Calaverita written about me :3 Sure thing, Twillie! =D Here you go: Twillie
Twillie drew like any other day, But looking over her shoulder, An uninvited beholder, Was death, there to take her away.
“I’ll spare your life,” the lady proposed, “If you design a new outfit for me.” Twillie, of course, was not opposed, And got to work, busy as a bee.
“I wish you’d come with me after all, Who if not you will draw me cute clothes? But a deal’s a deal, big or small, I’ll find someone else, I suppose!”
Thus Twillie’s demise was delayed, Just temporarily, I’m afraid! Her time will come one day as planned, At the hands of her biggest fan! And of course, your treat: You get a Pepitoria! It's two halves of a thin colorful wafer, stuck together with a little honey, and pumpkin seeds decorating the edge. ^_^

...Wait wait wait, you mean Day of the Dead isn't about... (Coco spoilers!)
...stealing guitars and going on fantastical adventures with your great-great-grandpa (though you don't know it at the time) and ousting a beloved singer as a fraud? The movies would lie? ;o; ... *ahem* Calaveritas sound like a lovely tradition! If it's not too late, I'd like to request one for my Wrighton character, Audo. ^^

this is a great idea ginz! is there a certain like, rhyme or meter they adhere to, or are they just general poems? O: Thank you, Moni! They're usually written in 4 line stanzas, and they must rhyme, though it doesn't matter if the rhyme is A-B-A-B, A-B-B-A, or A-A-B-B. There's also a 10 line version, but I'm not sure how the rhyming works on that, so I just stick to 4, hehe.
Thank you everyone for the interest! I'm really excited to write calaveritas for all of you! =D Since I'm a very novice poet, these might take me a while to complete, so please bear with me. <3 In the event that I can't finish all of them by the 4th, I will PM you as soon as I have them ready! (and maybe edit them into my post to save them for posterity in Memory Lane.)
