Hi,
It is very odd returning here (and to Neopets in general) sixteen or so years after my "heyday". I'm not entirely sure what prompted it though I suspect the pandemic played some role.
It's very odd clicking through old issues of the times (i.e., the issues that I and the writers who frequented this board at the time were mostly published in), clicking on some of the author links and seeing their accounts abandoned or compromised or gone altogether, for example, scriptfox, al_the_chia, shelleylow, shidi, tdyans...
To be honest, after I learned about the policy of deactivating old accounts, I was a bit surprised that mine was still around. Grateful though, since I admit Neopets and the old NT issues in particular have given me quite a lot of comfort the past month or so.
I'm curious if anyone here has shared this experience of returning after a long absence and discovering that so much of what and who they knew had disappeared. Personally I've found it a rather odd feeling, kind of akin to stumbling across an abandoned building (an impression that the removal of flash and consequent ubiquity of those tombstone graphics has intensified).
The sparseness of the NT is also a bit saddening, though I understand this is inevitable with a smaller user base.
... yet despite all this, I still find myself drawn to the site, as well as to the NT and NTWF. So this brings me to the main content of this post.
Hello!
I'm very happy this community still exists.
The NTWF and NT were a large part of my high school years and probably got me through them. They're how I discovered and shaped my love of creative writing and somehow (I guess grad school and a full-time software dev job played some role ) I lost that along the way.
Just spending a few weeks clicking around the NT and Neopets was enough to inspire a few story ideas. Yesterday I submitted a series, though as I'm not certain on all the new rules etc. I don't have high hopes it'll be accepted the first time around.
I don't think I'll ever be able to write the same type of story I did the first time around - at age 16-17 - any longer (i.e. the zanily comic Ixi of Doom sort) but I hope that the NT can be an outlet for whatever new experiences and feelings are swirling around inside of my 32 year old self.
Anyways, sorry for rambling... I'm excited to meet the new crowd of NT authors...
best regards,
~mle (aka "battlesunn")
