Well, after two years of trying to avoid it, it got me. I have no idea even how. Tested positive on my third lateral flow test. Now I got to isolate, because Scotland still insists on it. And cases were going down nationally too...
Got a sore throat, cough, fever, feel achey, and am tired. No loss of taste or smell though. Thing I am looking forward to the least is the cabin fever.

*Passes around chamomile and gives cheers of support.* Hope it doesn't hit too bad, and that in-room activities like crafts can keep you well occupied, Celes and anyone else who got it.

Shanghai... It's hard for me to comment because I'm not there or a part of that culture. And given how much of "dun care lol" people are while people are being left behind, I'm very hesitant to say nothing should be done to help curb cases. So in such a situation I'm very much the "better safe than sorry" type. That said, that... seems really extreme. I can't say I'm entirely surprised but it is still disquieting.

(Vaccine side effect talk ahead; nothing bad)
On a far more personal note. Today I got my booster vaccine (yes, I'm behind, until now; it's a bit harder to get it where I live and I didn't go many places before, but the latter may change soon), and am basically waiting on the side effects. Which... either my discomfort tolerance has increased or they're very mild. Or it's early.
The only thing I've really noticed is mild arm discomfort, and very mild stomach discomfort, which makes sense given a condition that predisposes me to that. So I'm sitting here going "hmm, my stomach is more sensitive." ... "Well, anyway." *Eats ice cream.*
Because I'm all about smart decisions. (I probably won't eat very much.)
So far everything is business as usual. Maybe I'll get tired later, but if so, I'll sleep it off; that's why I got it later in the day.

Glad you’re doing ok after the booster. Yeah just take it easy for a day or two. And I guess ice cream is nice! My gripe with Shanghai is mainly with the fact that you shouldn’t cause another health crisis with a hard lockdown. People aren’t getting enough to eat in a lot of cases and houses are being taken over against people’s wills to house Covid patients. And those who don’t comply are brutalized by the police, pets included. There’s taking precautions and being safe. And then there’s government abusing Covid-19 lockdowns and using it as a guise to assert control over people. And now there’s discussion of keeping the economy going by locking people down at work. Tesla for example: fortune.com/2022/04/18/shanghai-lockdown-tesla-workers-sleep-in-factory/People can’t live like this two years into a pandemic where we have vaccines and therapeutics and other measures that are far less draconian.

Yeah, I don't expect anything too bad. It was really only my first dose that hit me a bit, and even that only lasted a day and a half and was sufficiently handled with tea. So I don't expect anything from this to last more than a day. Now that I'm sitting down, the arm in question is hurting a bit more. But it's still nothing so bad that it's distracting.
Part of my reason for posting is that I know some people put off vaccination because of the side effects. So this is just another thing to the pile saying that it's pretty low-key. (Plus the fact that the effects of the vaccine are waaay preferable to full-on Covid.) The real trick now is getting an appointment, unless you live in a place with really easy access or with reliable walk-ins. I made an appointment online from a typical place and they called me the next morning telling me that they needed another day to get the vaccine, and so I needed to reschedule. Still, once that was sorted out, it was pretty streamlined.

Ah yeah, I think I remember hearing about the food problems now. And even pets? And forced evictions and living at work?? Yeah, this is either way overkill or indeed a guise. Or both. But sounds closer to the latter given their track record. =< Agreed, this is just draconian.

Do some places not require isolation anymore? That's a bit scary. I hope you're doing okay. <3 Only noticed this now, and it's been a few days, but I think the cabin fever was the worst bit for me too. That and the anxiety were a nasty combo!

Yeah, in England there is no legal requirement, and they have removed any need to isolated. Scotland kept the requirement, but it is not law. I'm fine. Lost my sense of smell a few days in. Cabin fever is beginning to set in, but mostly I found it to be a nice rest. xD Still got a ways to go (last day is Friday, just in time for the weekend.)

Here’s the censored video that attempted to go viral in China. Warning: not for the faint of heart so viewer discretion is still advised even though it is just audio. Notably things don’t start out that bad in the audio but it gets progressively worse. youtu.be/UtJzvJBZZ4MUpdate: My grandpa said the local government has permission to lift the lockdown on May 1 if they are to be believed.

So, Scotland has done away with mask wearing. At first I was afraid to get rid of the habit, but I have slowly worked my way up to it. As much as I understand the health benefits of mask wearing, it is not worthwhile for me to deal with it due to my sensory issues. I've found it much more comfortable to be without.
Still feel intensely guilty for not wearing one. The last two years have conditioned me well.
My workplace has also been very hesitant to get rid of mask wearing. Unofficially, a lot of the staff are fine to not wear masks, and we have come to the consensus that we are all okay with being unmasked. However, senior management would rather we all remain masked. Apparently they were very adamant about masks being worn in the library because it's unventilated. This information was passed on to me secondhand, as I was not present at that meeting. The library is also my primary workspace, with nobody at that meeting ever setting foot there. So, uh, what the heck, management? xD
I would rather not because of sensory issues, but if I have to, I shall. But nobody can make up their minds on the topic at work. Plus the mandate about the library would not have been passed on to me were it not for a co-worker and myself casually chatting. Please communicate what you want to do about this, management. xD
And of course, our visitors are mostly non-mask wearers, like most of the general public. I normally see about 60-75% of people in a particular setting like public transport unmasked. Same for my workplace. I just want some consistency and guidance as to what to do. xD;;

Shanghai is slowly opening up, but it’s not as rosy as some news sources may paint it to be.
My grandpa had his lockdown extended because one new case was found in his building. He cannot leave his flat.
My friend’s aunt had a neighboring family of five all come down with it, therefore lockdown extended another 14 days, same policy my grandpa is under.
Beijing is about to experience the same ordeal that Shanghai did as cases rise again.
Vaccination as a strategy to combat this was never discussed. It is purely just a lock everything down approach again. China does have a new mRNA vaccine coming soon (CanSino) so that one may be more effective but these misguided absolute zero Covid lockdown are starting to stir up discontent among government officials even.
But given the power of the top leadership, everyone is still treading carefully because one wrong step could mean your mysterious disappearance for a while.

Butter biscuits. I'm not high risk, but if that is the case, I'll have to get my second booster before I have to pay for something that should be free to protect public health because I raaaaawr *flips table* Gosh darn it, 'Murica. Why do we continue to be a joke in our healthcare?
