It's a new year, and time to start planning a new April Fools prank for the Neopian Times! April 1st is Thursday, and I'm guessing the April Fools Issue will happen on Friday the 2nd. Last year we had a lot of discussion and ideas, which will make a good start point for discussion this year: ntwriters.proboards.com/thread/53306/nt-april-fools-2020The past few years, we also opened up submissions to people from the Neoboards as well. So let's start discussions!

Last year, we discussed doing Chet Flash wasn't here, in honor of Adobe Flash being discontinued. In the end, it was tabled for 2021, as this is the year Flash is actually gone.
I really like this idea, personally, figuring out how the world of Neopia changes with flash gone. Does half of the paper maps in Neopia suddenly show up blank? Is the games room a lot quieter? Do Neopets feel uncomfortable getting dressed with a Cloud Jubjub always hanging around?
I see a lot of possibilities with playing around with Meta jokes with this theme.

It's a good meta joke but does it work as a fools? Like, what is the fools there? Flash will be gone by that point. We'd just be illustrating what reality in Neopia might look like reflecting that.

*kicks door open* It works for SO MANY fools SCORES of them
hey hey look listen see here don't worry I've got this
This is not only going to be about Flash Player (RIP FRIEND), okay, because that is a real life thing. No no, this can be about CHET Flash, the mythical memetic Times character, whom we can use as a metaphor, an allegory for Flash Player.
This collab could be about the disappearance of Chet Flash and how Chet Flash is no longer among us, but 1) that's on the mournful side 2) it overlaps with the Abdication theme from last year so here are some other things we can do.
After all, if this collab is about the *character* Chet Flash, it doesn't have to be about their disappearance! Flash Player is gone (F) and deserves a tribute, but Chet Flash doesn't have to go anywhere!
Obviously in order to write Chet Flash we would need to develop them a bit further, but - everyone can write them differently, the more confusion the better - the more mysterious they remain, the better!
For example, my personal mental image of Chet Flash is like a combination of: a mischievous vigilante, a la 60s Batman, and a mysterious artist, a la Banksy.
Things that could happen in the collab: * the disappearance of Flash can translate to strange happenings and reality glitches, as June mentioned, but in-world we can expand on those strange spooky events, I could see something like scifi or those overdramatic paranormal documentaries, also, just because Flash *Player* (FAREWELL) is going now, doesn't mean the consequences in Neopia-verse can't happen whenever the heck we like - on the contrary, by April people it might be out of people's minds at least I hope by then the site will be stable * Chet Flash's belongings go missing -> caper theme! or, * Where in Neopia is Chet Flash?? Chet Flash sightings?! Chet Flash tracking! Where was Chet Flash last spotted? Which site characters know real information about Chet Flash, who is lying, and why? -> possibility of a fake site event, a la Tarla Hunt! This is the funnest take I can think of.
Thanks for starting the thread, June! Flash Player may have got a lot of criticism for serious computer science reasons, but, it also brought us SO MUCH good stuff while it was in use, and I'd really love some sort of tribute for it. *sniffle* goodbye, little plugin, you did your best out there.

I'd suggest in addition to Chet Flash's disappearance we could joke about the new layout, though I'm unsure how TNT will feel about that.

I'd suggest in addition to Chet Flash's disappearance we could joke about the new layout, though I'm unsure how TNT will feel about that. I think it might depend on how much is truly converted by that point, and how long everyone has had time to adjust. Like, if everything is converted to the new layout by early February and people have a good idea how to use it by March, I think they'd be okay with it, especially if it was more poking fun at say, the reaction of users on the HC. That being said, I don't know that there will be enough time to write an article like that by the time we know how people are adjusting. If it's still in the throws of being converted, they might not look so kindly on jokes about it yet? Hope that makes sense.

By the way, aside from the Chet Flash concept, the only other prank idea I recall being mentioned was "what if humans/owners suddenly went missing", where pets would be sort of like children waking up in a world with no adults. If anybody recalls other ideas, do throw them in! For jokes about the new layout: I feel like we might start getting jokes about cloud Jubjubs soon enough. x3 I think it could work if handled delicately enough; there are ways to make it about inconveniences in daily Neopian life instead of directing it at real-life work. I'll just throw around more ideas for working Chet Flash into stories: * a defender of Neopia, a mysterious independent affiliate * Chet Flash is a mysterious travelling DJ (credit to Nat)
* a colleague of Dr. Landelbrot, an assistant whose own research had unforeseen consequences, ties with the Lab Ray scientist * links to Dr. Sloth * conspiracy theories linking Chet Flash to every crime ever caused in Neopia, or to every plot, finding them in photos like a cryptid * links to whatever was going on in Hannah and the Lost Time Capsules, since that's still fresh * Chet Flash is the only one who can fix reality? * Chet Flash must Leave and return to their planet and take the endangered games with them, to a better world that will accept them. ;-; I'm also trying to picture examples of ways Neopian reality could glitch to reflect Flashpocalypse. Since the maps are down, that might cause problems for Neopians trying to move from one space to the next. Maybe they would keep looping through the same area. Customisation is not visible. Can Neopians not see each other properly? Can they see blurry grey blobs? Can they not see each other's faces? Spooky. Locked out of our Neohomes, oops. The Expellibox is gone. Does that mean scarabs are invading Qasala as we speak? On a bigger scale, the Games Room was placed in Roo Island to prevent it from being swarmed by bugs again. We might have a slight problem, then. And many relevant site characters to tackle it. The Lunar Calendar is not displaying. Clearly that can mean only one thing - Kreludor is gone 8O

All right, throwing my own ideas/suggestions/cake into the ring as well. - Looking at the previous thread, I rather like the idea of Leader Swap. We don't even have to be orderly with it - we can all just haphazardly chuck each Neopian leader into another random land that isn't theirs for maximum confusion. Although to make it more believable we could figure out set swaps for us to run with, like for example we all agree that Lord Darigan is swapping with Fyora and King Altador gets to show up in Meridell. - Piggybacking off of Liou's idea, another idea could be the Hidden Tower vanishing because we no longer have access to the Faerieland map and of course, the Hidden Tower isn't going to show up in the list of handy dandy links. We could also do something with a mass retirement of items to make room for a whole batch of new items which could include like, Jeran's armor or something. Talk about some items that are suddenly gonna retire, oh noes, scare the pants off people who are still saving for HT items. - Years ago we had Faerie Wars so what if we came up with another pretend plot/war that involves the more recently released characters who have had little involvement/appearance aside from like, one or two events or games? Alternately, new and weird Obelisk factions. What if AAA was quiet all this time because he was creating his own faction - The Gamers. - Daily Dare or GMC still happening, only with HTML games. This is assuming we don't get DD or GMC all the way till April but that's a likely assumption at this point.

Although to make it more believable we could figure out set swaps for us to run with, like for example we all agree that Lord Darigan is swapping with Fyora and King Altador gets to show up in Meridell. Thanks for reminding us of Leader Swap!! That would be so much fun! * On one hand, agreeing on a set of leader swaps would make the entire event more believable; on the other hand, it might be a bit too difficult to coordinate a poll to match each leader to a different land in time for the collab, and allowing everyone to swap leaders chaotically in their own pieces could allow for more spontaneity. * KING ROO AND ROO ISLAND MUST BE A PART OF THIS SWAP * Is this a monarch-only swap, or a swap for all leaders? Because if it is the latter, make way for Doctor Sloth and Governor Gavril. 8D * The only downsides I see to this theme is that it overlaps with last year's Abdication theme - monarch gone, chaos, what do. * Also, how could we make it look like a fake site event, which might have users scramble to find a "join plot" page on the site? (that's my favourite part of any NT prank x3) - Piggybacking off of Liou 's idea, another idea could be the Hidden Tower vanishing because we no longer have access to the Faerieland map and of course, the Hidden Tower isn't going to show up in the list of handy dandy links. We could also do something with a mass retirement of items to make room for a whole batch of new items which could include like, Jeran's armor or something. Talk about some items that are suddenly gonna retire, oh noes, scare the pants off people who are still saving for HT items. Yes the Hidden Tower being gone would be a hilarious part of Flashpocalypse I love it! A couple years ago we had the Oracle Games which involved the setting of the Obelisk Battleground, and a huge cast of plot characters from pretty much every plot, all trapped in a horrible reality survival show. It wasn't one of the biggest collabs, though. I don't know how many new site characters have been created since then.
War-style plots would catch attention for sure, we just need to figure out who's fighting whom. Without it being too close to one of the old plots, I guess. Maybe focus on one of the newer lands, or lands that haven't been involved in plots yet.
What if Kiko Lake had enough of being called boring and became metal? Moltara uprising?
Oops, Kiko Lake IS a dormant volcano.
Haunted Woods VS Faerieland neighbour wars? Kari faction to finally reclaim the Festival of Neggs, VS Topsi faction? (seasonal enough that it could be mistaken for an actual plot)
The Gamers as a new Obelisk faction is genius and could be hugely memetic, with plenty of references parodying gamer "culture". Participants could be told to join the Gamers to get special gaming trophies and clout and whatnot - and this could be tied to the games room revamp! - Daily Dare or GMC still happening, only with HTML games. This is assuming we don't get DD or GMC all the way till April but that's a likely assumption at this point. Hmmm... I see your Html GMC and raise you a Html-game based ALTADOR CUP! 8D Sorry folks, no AC games this year... watch your favourite teams through a thrilling game of uuuuh Godori instead!! Fetch, Hide and Seek, Kacheekers!

LiouWhat If Human/Owners Went Missing:Hmm, not sure about this one as it would exist entirely in the meta. Also, aside from worrying about our sudden disappearance, unless the joke revolves around our Neopets looking for where we went I'd imagine it would be "business as usual". I'd also imagine it would bring up the question "what is the relation between Neopet & Owner". Neopets are shown to be intelligent, self-aware, physically able, and have their own personalities... yet we're called their owners like they're a real world pet. We may need to be there to have them be created/exist in the first place, but after that they're pretty much self-efficient beings. It could bring in some unfortunate implications unless we all set a ground rule it's more of an archaic title and "owner" simply means "creator/caretaker" and otherwise its a sibling/buddy relationship. Though I guess we could also REALLY "lean on" on the meta where we treat Neopets like what it is, a website, and suddenly everyone stopped playing thus no Neopets are being fed or played with, shops aren't being bought from, dailies being done, etc. and how would our Neopets and characters on the site be reacting to this sudden inactivity (likely madness and hysteria). Chet Flash:Well the joke with Chet Flash would likely revolved around anything on the site involving Flash suddenly not working. Like I have an idea for an article where I investigate "Chet Flash" and his connection to the downed parts of the site, giving a in-world explanation why we suddenly can't do the activity. Maybe we should also consider creating a new character, a counterpart character who has suddenly took Chet Flash's place: Eichty Emell Phife. Kat: Leader Swap:Now that's a fun idea, only question would be should we have an agreed list of which leaders swapped worlds or let everyone do their own interpretation. I imagine the latter would be easier and allow everyone to be more imaginative, though the former would give a more unified presentation (and while most people would know it's an April Fools joke, past April Fool jokes have always tried to present themselves as somewhat believable at least during the bulk of the piece). Also we'd probably have to agree upon what is a world leader cause some worlds either don't have a direct leader (Haunted Woods, Terror Mountain) or is led by a council (Altador, Tyrannia, Mystery Island) so do we stick with worlds that have a defined ruler (maybe including the leading member of worlds ruled by councils), pick a well known character from that world and make them the de facto ruler, or have some swaps result some lands suddenly not having a ruler/a council of rulers? If we were to assign each world a ruler:
* Altador: Council-ruled, with King Altador the leading member. * Brightvale: King Hagan * Faerieland: Queen Fyora * "Main" Haunted Woods: No ruler. At best they have "elders" which one could go to for guidance: Brain Tree, Esophagor, & Edna. This of course doesn't take into account other beings such as Ilere, The Spirit of Slumber, and Mr. Krawley. The Romani Camp is a toss-up as they probably have (a) leader(s) but we've never been introduced to them. I would also count the Fairgrounds as part of the "Main" Haunted Woods, and if there's a leader of the carnies I'd say it would probably be Sidney so we could add him to the list of "elders". * Neovia: Unless we want to resurrect Mayor Thumburt, I think we could say that Sophie/Bruno/Reginal's father Edmund could now be running things. And no, Tippens from the Spooky Food Eating Contest is not the mayor, he's the president of the Spooky Shindig Society and I don't see him wanting to become more than that (though he probably would work with the mayor, so we could say maybe Neovia has a council of citizens). * Kiko Lake: Mayor Fuff * Krawk Island: Governor Gavril McGill * Kreludor: Xarthab & Zorlix * Maraqua: King Kelpbeard * Meridell: King Skarl * Darigan Citadel: Lord Darigan * Moltara: The Mayor of Moltara * Mystery Island: Council-ruled. No member is specifically pointed out to be the leading member, but if I were to pick one I'd probably would go with Techo Master (he'd probably leave running the Mystery Island Training School to Ryshu). * Neopia Central: No "ruler" though it probably does have a mayor or governor with a council. And no, I don't see the Defenders or Neopia, specifically Judge Hog, as a de facto choice in this regard. Of the existing characters we know (which in that case I'd say it's ruled by a council made-up of the various Shopkeepers) if I were to pick one I'd go with Kauvara. * Roo Island: King Roo * Shenkuu: Emperor of Shenkuu. * Terror Mountain: No overall "ruler". Like we have The Keeper of Time but he's more the ruler of the Bori than of Terror Mountain (though I guess nothing is saying he can't be chosen to swap and "new" ruler couldn't try to assert more control over the other parts of Terror Mountain). I'd imagine it's another council-ruled made-up of notable figures from each major part of Terror Mountain, with the leading member probably Taelia. * Sakhmet: Princess Amira * Qasala: King Jazan & Queen Nabile * Tyrannia: Council-ruled, with Kyruggi the leader member. * Virtupets Space Station: Unless we want to joke about it being Dr. Sloth, doesn't seem like anyone is in charge. Guessing committee-ruled, if I were to pick one as the leading member of existing characters the only one I can think that would fit is Commander Valka.
Hidden Tower Missing Link & Update:Oh, don't tease me about making a whole batch of new Hidden Tower items. Anyway, I supposed not a bad idea but this feels a bit small in scope (and it would obviously be included back in once they made a HTML5 version of Faerieland's maps). Maybe expand on the idea, like joke about how there's actually secret locations in every world and how they'll be getting a revamp too. New Obelisk Factions:Ooh, this has always been an article idea I wanted to do as I find it strange how only the six factions we have now were the only group who showed up to fight for the Obelisk. Like, I guess they were the fastest to mobilize and once The Oracle came out it chose those those six as its "champions" so wouldn't except other groups. But that's (head)canon, obviously for an April Fools we can say something like some Factions are wanting to pull out or The Oracle is feeling a bit suspicious if it made the right choice so has decided to allow for new Factions. Once again, the question would be do we all agree on a set group of factions or do we all make up our own? If I were to provide some suggestions: * Knights of The Three Kingdoms: Made up of soldiers from Meridell, Darigan Citadel, and Brightvale. While I'd like to make Jeran the leader, I think it would be better to be a new character who likely has a relation to all three kingdoms (a high ranking knight that grew up in Meridell, was taught in Brightvale, and when the first Meridell-Darigan war happened decided to side with Darigan after learning Skarl stole the orb. He was branded a traitor & sought refuge in Brightvale which he was granted (Hagan understanding his reasoning), until the second war where he helped Meridell forces fight back against Kass's as well as rallied Darigan Resistance fighters who opposed Kass taking over the Citadel. After the second war he was given a full pardon and decided to hang his sword up to become an ambassador between the three kingdoms, but with the discovery of the Obelisk he convinced the three kingdoms to sign a treaty allowing him to take an army formed of the three kingdom's best soldiers to claim the Obelisk for the good of the Kingdoms and all Neopia). * Faerie Elite Brigade: While Fyora initially refused to get involved with the Obelisk War to focus on repairing Faerieland, its becoming clearer to raise Faerieland back into the sky they're going to need a great deal of power the Faerie's no longer have... but the Obelisk does. Not wanting to get the central Faerieland army tied up in endless fighting, she assigns Aethia the task of creating an elite brigade of Faerie soldiers and Aethia permission to promote a Faerie soldier she sees fit to become a new Faerie General. This new Faerie General will lead the Faerie Elite Brigade to claim the Obelisk to restore Faerieland to its former glory. * Pirate Lords: Captain Scarblade is back and he brought "friends". After his defeat in Curse of Maraqua, Scarblade lost of a lot of reputation causing some other pirate lords to rise up against him. He quashed the rebellions but realized the damage that has been done to his image so instead of punishing the pirate lords allowed them to rule parts of the seas with Scarblade acting as a landlord of the sea. This has been keeping him busy until the Obelisk came to his attention. Seeing it as a way to restore his glory, he has gathered his crew and the crew of the pirate lords under his command to try and take the Obelisk for themselves. * Space Rangers: A joint effort of Kreludor and Virtupets Space Station, the Space Rangers are hi-tech soldiers who want to secure the Obelisk so they could analyze and potentially make use of it. It's not exactly clear who their loyalty is to having Resistance Fighters, Sloth Loyalists, and agents of the Alien Aisha Empire/Neocola Corporation in their ranks. Their leader is a robotic Grundo bounty hunter with a mixed past & memories (it remembers having a life on Kreludor, fighting for the resistance, taking orders from Sloth, and most clear oldest memory was having been re-activated by the Alien Aisha Empire who used it as a Neocola Machine deliveryman before breaking free of their control. It became a bounty hunter out of a sense of following some unknown programming and wanting to figure out what it is, or rather who it was). * The Striking Fists: Ninjas and samurai from all over Neopia, mostly from Shenkuu and Mystery Island, join forces to claim the Obelisk believing it could help them reach a higher level of enlightenmnet & possibly existence. Their leader is an old shogun, once a samurai but now too weak to wield his blade for an extended period of time, he took up martial arts learning how to give deliver strong & precise strikes with his hands and feet. He was also once full of anger believing it to be the only way to obtain power, but after growing past what he believed to be his prime he sought a more calmer life and began practicing meditation & self-realization. * The Desert Riders: While Sakhmet and Qasala both have interest in the Obelisk they cannot spare much of their armies to claim it, so instead hire a group of desert nomad warriors known as the Desert Riders. The Desert Riders are believed to be what remains of an old desert civilization that fell apart due to internal strife and natural disasters. While normally they kept to themselves, recently a young female rider won the right of leadership by defeating the old leader and wishes to unify the nomadic tribes of the desert and form a new kingdom to the likes of Sakhmet and Qasala. By obtaining the Obelisk it's agreed Sakhmet and Qasala would help her build the new city. * Obelisk Smashers: THE TYRANNIANS WILL HAVE NO MORE OF THIS! Disobeying the direct orders of the Tyrannian Council to not get involved with the Obelisk, the Obelisk Smashers are Tyrannians who are tired of the endless fighting in their land and want to destroy the Obelisk once and for all! Their leader is Chumbo, a large and muscular Chomby who uses an entire tree as his club! * The Wraith Ravagers: From the shadows, an army of Wraiths suddenly appear wishing to claim the Obelisk's power. Their leader looks to be a leaner but more decoratively dressed Oblivion going by the name of "Inquisitor". * The Highscorers: And sure, why not have a group of gamers as their own faction. Wouldn't make AAA or his family the leader (nor Chadley), but maybe make a new character who is a fan/rival of AAA. HTML DD/GMC:That could be a fun idea, thinking of what things that can be done with the HTML games we can base activities on (all the NeoQuest achievements).

Heeey it's February, who'd have thunk? We have under two months to put together an April Fools prank issue. It might be cool to solidify the suggested themes into a handy list, so that everyone who's expressed interest, and hopefully also many interested lurkers, right, right? can vote for a theme to go with, and so that we have time to write the things! More thoughts and responses: Humans Going Missing: Indeed, this would play on two completely different levels: if we treat Neopia as a virtual pet site, the human owners are mostly in control, and their disappearance would cause many inconveniences in daily life. In Neopia in-world, the human owners are occasional foster parents and caretakers, and their disappearance would be more of a... sad blip, for Neopets to deal with in a coming-of-age sort of story. oh no I have JUST realised the similarity with a certain event that happened in a certain cinematic universe and that we should absolutely not referenceI'm still not sure how this could be translated to a fake site event, though. Chet Flash: not much more to comment on this one aside that I'm hype for it, that the acronym "html 5" is horrendously difficult to turn into a catchy name, and that I think it's important for this theme not to be limited to nostalgia, but also to make fun of the present and future. For that purpose, including an allegory of html 5 could indeed be a thing, and preserving the character Chet Flash in fanon overall. Hidden Tower Missing Link: I just see this as a part of a greater Flashpocalypse-related prank! Leader Swap: Hmm, this one is super fun, but it might risk focusing too much on a handful of elite characters. I think this one would need to be done in a way that would affect common Neopians and their lives overall. New Obelisk Factions: this list is amazing! xD I can actually see a lot of these possible factions being on TNT's board before they narrowed it down to six. Possibly because some of these overlap with the main six, actually. I'd find the Faerie Elite Brigade, in particular, even more interesting if it was not linked to Fyora at all, but rather to an opposing party of faeries who might resent her choice of keeping Faerieland down to earth and closer to Neopian neighbours. More conflict that way! And it avoids Fyora casually invading Tyrannian land. Though that might have been even more chaotic.
UNLESS we keep to Fyora having abdicated as if it were canon, and insert a new Faerie Queen to invade Tyrannia for this! The thing with Obelisk Factions is that they're not new at all. They were incredibly fresh and new at one time, during the very first Obelisk War. After that, they faded to the background and became a daily with no further storytelling, and many people voiced disappointment at that. In order for this prank to make a splash, I think we'd need to expand on the storytelling and make it at least as bombastic as the first Obelisk War, if not more. Just introducing new factions to the already-happening skirmishes would not be enough. I think there needs to be a reason for the new factions turning up, like an incredible supernatural happening in-world. Maybe outside of Tyrannia too.
Maybe the original six factions could have been whisked off into space, or suspiciously vanished by the Oracle, and their avatars, themes and boons could have been suddenly retired! Mwahaha. Suddenly the battlefield is just empty, so new factions have to turn up! Maybe the original six factions have been transformed into the Oracle's mindless minions, and are now what we have to battle against!
New upgraded Obelisk? In a different place? A Column, a Pillar? An Arch, with a portal under it? New Oracle, rival for the old one? New other thing?
Obelisk countdown, launches into space?
Obelisk was just the horn of a beast that is now waking up?
Obelisk opens portals, including for time travelling? (sequel to that small Brightvale magic portal event thing?) New boons? Superpowers for your pets? Heck, throw in everything and the kitchen sink, to make it seem like the biggest possible event, that would justify having so many new factions. ... the War for Chet Flash? Gamer Faction arises, Chet Flash has ascended to become a powerful Oracle-type being? wheeee

Liou right, it's about time to narrow down to a theme, probably easiest done with a poll on this thread. I'm going to list out the themes I see, we can discuss the final list to vote on, and then we can start voting on Wednesday, about 48 from right now. And I figure the poll can close on Sunday, 4 days after that. I know it's a tight timeframe, but we still need time to flesh out the final idea, advertise to the Neoboards, and to actually write the pieces. Let's see, I think these are our main contenders: - Farewell to Chet Flash - The Case of the Missing Owners - Leader Swap - New Obelisk Faction(s) - HTML5 Games Event Not included is: - Hidden Tower Update (as this would fold under Chet Flash) Let me know if I missed anything!

I mean, I have a character who's kind of like that. Grew up in Meridell, studied in Brigthvale, joined the Darigan Citadel after the second war when Darigan told him about the Orb being stoling... Just saying, lol

I’m in for leader swap. For a long time, I’ve been looking for an excuse for Fyora and Darigan to swap. I have a thought that maybe Fyora would try to make Darigan Citadel less dreary and dark. However, trouble starts brewing after she sacks Master Vex and transforms the dungeons to be more like how Faerieland runs dungeons. Meanwhile, Lord Darigan doesn’t really want to change anything about Faerieland, but the faeries don’t really want to listen to a non-faerie ruler so Darigan has to deal with faeries wanting to replace him with a faerie right away.
