This... may be an odd question but... I take it there's a Discord chat for this? Maybe? How might I get in on that?? I do not know how to use DiscordNo problem, I found you in the old Rolly Chair Squad chat and sent you an invite to the NTWF server. If you click on the thingy, you'll get the nice Weewoo icon in your left-hand menu thinger, and from there, you can mute any channels you're not interested in and go into " # naelus".

Did a quick scribble yesterday trying to translate Rabbit ♠ 's characters into my own art style; here was the result! Also, as a bonus, I slapped on some color.

My Characters! Roda is my PC. She's a Scimon, a small squirrel-like mammal. Scimons dwell in trees and are excellent climbers. They eat mostly nuts and seeds. Roda is pretty self-confident in her speed and ability to not be caught, so she's not afraid of predators. 21 cm tall. Julaine is one of Roda's younger sisters (she has a pretty large family.) Julaine isn't quite as confident as her older sister, but they're still close. 19 cm tall.

Muuri (female, PC) Species: Marsupial lion/Thylacoleo carnifex Height at shoulder: 73cm
Spirituality Muuri's spirituality is very closely connected to the land. Her species have been on Naelus for a long, long time and they have come to feel a strong bond to the land. They also revere the Spirit, to whom they owe their survival on Naelus. But their memory is long and they still tell stories of the old land, in the Dreamtime. In Muuri’s understanding, it’s more that the land owns her and cares for her than that she or any other animal has a right to live or hunt on the land. When she takes a life for food she does so because she believes the land (or the Spirit, which she views as being tied to the land) permits her to for her survival. But she lives in a constant understanding that one day she will return to the land. She just hopes she has time to raise her son to follow after her before that happens.
Anatomy Marsupial lion can be a very misleading name. Muuri’s species have little in common with lions. Muuri has no mane. She has small pointed ears. Her retractable front claws help her climb trees and her dappled fur helps her blend in to the foliage. She has a long, powerfully muscled tail somewhat like a kangaroo’s and she can stand on her hind legs while balancing on her tail. Her jaws are also powerfully muscled, giving her a bite that is at least twice as strong as the bite of a modern lion relative to her size. She also has a pouch (of course) and a young joey who sometimes wants to spend more time in the pouch than she would like him to!
I like to think of her as an overgrown carnivorous possum with a kangaroo tail and cat’s ears...
Hunting Muuri’s legs are actually very mismatched making her a slow runner. She is an ambush predator and will often wait in a tree near a watering hole to drop down and attack unsuspecting prey. Because of her height when standing on her back legs, and her incredibly powerful bite and her handy retractable claws, she is able to take prey much larger than herself. But once committed to an attack she must pretty much kill or be killed as she is very poorly adapted to running or hiding if she has bitten off more than she can chew (so to speak). When Muuri has made a successful kill she will often store portions in a tree to protect it from land-dwelling scavengers. That said, Muuri can also be a scavenger herself. Yira (male, NPC) Species: Marsupial lion/thylacoleo carnifex Size: liable to change through the story as he is growing fast, but at the outset of the story he is just on the upper end of being able to fit in his mother’s pouch.
Personality Yira is cute. There’s no other word for it. Like many average toddlers he vascilates between wanting to be all grown up and do it himself, and figuratively burying his face in his mother’s skirts when the world out there gets all big and scary. The literal equivalent of this for Yira would be attempting to hide in his mother’s pouch. Language Muuri and Yira occasionally use words from Gamilaraay language when speaking to each other. Gamilaraay is a real world language spoken by the Kamilaroi nation of indigenous Australian people. The first complete thylacoleo carnifex skeletons were found in Kamilaroi country and it made sense to me that given Muuri’s strong bond to the land she would want to retain some of the language of the old land.
I plan to provide a glossary of Gamilaraay terms here as words come up in my posts. But to start with I will just comment that Muuri and Yira both have Gamilaraay names, with Muuri meaning lightning, and Yira meaning tooth.

=D Oooh, very interesting critter, Reiqua! Hadn't heard of those before. And bebe. <3 I'm definitely intrigued to see how they play out in the story! (Though small reminder, as mentioned in this post watering holes are neutral zones where hunting is forbidden on the island. Muuri is still entirely welcome to stalk from trees, though!)

Thanks ShinkoI had recalled that post but I must have misunderstood it as applying only to certain watering holes rather than the majority. Still that makes sense. And just because thylacoleo carnifex might have hunted predominantly at waterholes in prehistoric Australia doesn’t mean that their Naelus brethren couldn’t have adapted to do it differently, especially in light of certain laws that they might not want to break!!

More sketches! Thorn ReiquaSorry if this isn't quite what you had in mind! Reconstruction images on the internet seem to vary quite a lot.

It be a Kohimu. <3 I still love this, and he really does remind me of an axolotl haha (I love axies, but they are tiny derps.) I also love, as discussed on discord, the thought that went into his legs- modelling them on a style of turtle, so you still get the duck-ish swimming potential without having feet that seem totally out of place.

Lacintell the Procoptodon: I haven't had a lot of time to spend on drawing my Procoptodon character, Lacintell, but I do plan on drawing more artwork of him soon. This image is just so everyone has a bit of reference for who he is. He is a procoptodon gilli, a prehistoric short-faced kangaroo. He stands approximately 100 cm tall and if my research is correct, he walks instead of hops. His story: My basic idea behind Lacintell is that he came from a proud family of procoptodon thinkers. The procoptodons were highly intelligent; more so than most species at the time of the Ice Age, and although Lacintell was indeed smarter than most other creatures, he unfortunately was not as intelligent as the rest of his family. He could not comprehend many of the ideas and theories that his relatives would think up and thus, he was seen as inferior. He was given a new name ( Lack Intelligence), disowned and kicked out of the family. Lacintell is still quite smart and he has a strong desire to prove this to the other creatures. However, he has low self-esteem because was unable to meet his family's standards. Lacintell may have trouble socializing because of this.

Plot spoilers for early round 1: Beech is dead. Why is Beech dead? Couldn't it have been Mochi or something? I mean, sure, Quicksnap has too much personality to die this early in the game but surely Mochi was dispensable?? xP I had a major soft spot for Beech. And she didn't even get to meet Yira! She would have loved him. I am crai. EDIT: (also spoilery) PS, ShinkoQuicksnap had better have a touching and beautiful reaction to Beech’s death or else you will be facing my displeasure (which is, by all accounts, not very formidable... but it’s a matter of principle you see!) xP
