It was a rainy Saturday morning. Some might say it was a good day for doing nothing but curling up on the couch with a good story to read. Others might say there was a sense of anticipation and excitement in the wind as it gusted past - a fine day to be thinking of embarking on an adventure. Still others were firmly of the opinion that it was a perfect day to do both of those things. And so begins the story of our intrepid adventurers. It was a sizeable party as they set off on this adventure, picking up more along the way. The open road ahead of them held the promise of adventure, excitement, and perhaps even hardships. Some had travelled this road before. Some had never before passed this way. And some had never embarked on a journey of this sort in their lives. But there was one thing that tied this whole party together, from the oldest grizzled mentor to the youngest fresh-faced adventurer - they had a road and they were going to travel it, and do so together. And so with this spirit of adventure in their front of their minds, our party of intrepid explorers curled up on their various couches with a good story to read. *** No, I don't intend this discussion to be in character, haha. Just thought that would be a fun way to set the tone. There's not a lot to say except, go forth and read! This thread is available for discussion, hype, and comments, reflection, whathaveyou. The first post will contain details of what we're up to reading and how long is left to that chapter. It'll also contain the opt in list, which I've already got a couple of names for, but I'll chat to others over the coming days too. So go forth and read!

... oh, oops, I didn't realize 'expressing interest' and 'opting in to be tagged' were separate things. I thought opting in for tagging was for people who weren't necessarily participating in the reading party but still wanted to be tagged with reactions to their posts and characters. ^^;; Anyway, I'm glad I check the Most Recent posts all the time! Please feel free to tag me in posts from now on!
And I guess it's time for me to 'dress up' my profile! I've been looking forward to this! =D

\ o / Whoop whoop, hype!
Just FYI to everybody, I read through the first post of the game (with all the metagame information) and confirmed that I was wrong before, it does not contain spoilers. So feel free to read through it so you can acquaint yourself with the game mechanics Medieval used. It isn't necessary to understand the mechanics to follow the story, but it does lend some helpful context for why certain things play out the way they do.

There were a couple of expressions of interest that I wasn't sure whether they formally constituted an opt-in or not, so am getting around to following up, just having a slow morning and haven't got to it yet! I'll pop you on the opt-in list. If there's anyone else who's confused at not seeing their name on the opt-in list, feel free to post here too! Otherwise I'll get to making the list a little more complete... when I get to it XD

Oh, by the way! If anybody who played Medieval wants to dress up their profile, but does not art, feel free to poke me and I'd be happy to draw you a profile image.

I've started reading, and the first thing I'm wondering is what everyone's initial thought of the pronounciation of "Aines" is... =P (but how ironically fitting, the post containing his first words being sandwiched in between two of the silliest characters) other than that, HYPE HYPE HYPE (and will doubtless edit this post with reactions/reflections as reading continues) - Ah, the early installment weirdness, where pretty much anything goes. Cleveland in canon (with the character who brought Tony there actually being created from a joke in the Skype chat, if I remember correctly); Karma demanding eyes right off the bat; wanton destruction of furniture... Also, the early times where everyone was still fully active in the RP. D: (Although, in any case, it is fun re-reading all these posts to spot subtle hints as to their backstories or roles.)
- oh whoops I completely forgot Marson was an actual noble from the start
- Alain's "handsomeness had faded"? xD I feel like there's near-unanimous disagreement on that point. Also, I forget exactly what the Great Tax Unicorn is referencing?
- Also forgot about the "Lesbian" pasta, which if I remember correctly is also a callback (call-forward?) to Mafia III, as were some of the other characters (Rosie mentions hereditary blindness, for instance) and places (WEBSTERRRRRR).
- oh boy, the first in-RP mentions of Courdon and it's already bad news
- Yep. Kaldora is a LARPer. In medieval times. Playing a character from the Warcraft universe. Legitly. (then again there is also quite a bit of early installment weirdness in her intro post, especially personality-wise) ...Also, it should be obvious from the context that she's doing LARP stuff, but Kaldora's species (or professed species) is completely 100% unrelated to other elves that come up in the story. (Kinda like how real vampires don't sparkle in the sun.)
...Also be prepared for a lot of reading; I'm only on page 3 and I'm already reduced to skimming and summaries xD; In general, I feel like the tone of the first round was largely informed by the recent ending of Mafia III and everyone wanting a more lighthearted feel after such a heavy game. (I can neither confirm nor deny whether said tone lasts throughout the RP.)

I probably won't be reading along, but I like reactions, so I may pop in now and again. xD Also forgot about the "Lesbian" pasta, which if I remember correctly is also a callback (call-forward?) to Mafia III, as were some of the characters and places.
Yup, it's a callback to a joke from Mafia III. Though I realize that it may look weird without the context of Mafia III. So I'll put the context here! (There's no spoilers below, but this may inform character interactions between mine and Jay's characters during that game.)
Basically, Jay's character in Mafia III had a character quirk where he got everyone's names, backstories, and very livelihoods wrong because that's how he saw them as they fit in the context of his "My Life's a Show" quirk. (Making for hilarious unreliable narrator posts. xD ) My character in that game, Kylie, was given the name Claire, and her invented story was that Claire and his character have an on-again-off-again relationship. Entirely invented, due to Kylie not liking him at all, but also being, you guessed it, a lesbian. She's told him this to his face in response to his advances, to which he assumed that 'lesbian' is a pasta dish that 'Claire' has a craving for.
So in that Medieval post, I decided to make a call-back to that joke. Aunt Clare's name was also influenced by that joke, but no worries, her character is not solely defined by that.

Ahhh and here's the reason I never properly read Medieval... roleplays are so sprawling due to their inherent format, and they're not... neat... to reread, especially if it's laden with textwalls full of introspection that's more useful to a fellow RPer than someone reading it. Not that I'm complaining, it's just an observation; obviously writing an RP to be best for re-reading isn't the best way to run an RP, pfff.
>> I have technicalllly read 75% of the way through Medeival, but I also just picked the characters I liked the most and followed them. So I will make An Attempt to at least skim all of the posts after reading the summaries and add a few new characters to my roster of knowledge.
Also: discuss how the world of Medieval gave rise to the modern United States (and apparently since Toyota exists, Japan). I like this canon because MURICA and Bald Eagles will usurp Woo.
Wait
BALD EAGLE SAMURAI WARRIORS ARE THE BEST IDEA I'VE EVER HAD
... what was I talking about again?

LOLz, Tony is a bit of a canonwut because in the expanded universe it's fairly explicit that the continent Kyth is on isn't North America. XD One of these days we should sit down and figure out how that works, but it's easier just to declare A Wizard Did It because... a wizard did it. XD

Yes, my display name is Ambrose but I have Alain as my avatar. I will fix this soon, just because my existing Ambrose avatar is either a) cringe or b) contains spoilers.Whoo. \o/ I am very excited to share this whole wonderful sprawling RP that began this crazy world with everyone! It is quite hilarious in hindsight how much has changed with the expanded universe. Including the early-character syndrome. >< I genuinely cringe at my first post, since the characers changed so much from what they are there to what they truly are. (Ambrose became much less comic and far more tragic, Alain was still ruthless and manipulative but not as much of a jerk (like, actual-Alain would never be as callous to Ambrose later on; that became a defining trait). So please don't take that as indicative of what they will be later. 8D Fun facts: * Alain was never meant to be a character. We just had to invent a ruler for the region Stallion was from, and I pulled out the rejected name from the choice I used for Ambrose. Then a little voice in my head thought "hmm, isn't it weird that the Grand Duke would not attend the coronation?" and lo and behold. * He was originally began as a Lord Vetinari from Discworld expy. * Meanwhile, Ambrose is supposed to be funny. Don't know how well the comedy works, but enjoy it while it lasts, because *laugh track* CoasterAlain's handsomeness had indeed faded! =O Compare and contrast! Main-game: 30 years prior Okay, I stand corrected. >_> He has just metamorphised into a different kind of handsomeness. Also, regarding the Great Tax Unicorn...I genuinely cannot remember. xD;

I’m not too far in yet, but... I knew about Garrick, a Jayeee character, and I knew about Alain, a dignified man from the pics I’ve seen of him ( Celestial). I had no idea they were father and son x’DDD I am suddenly very interested to read more about them x3
