My usual drawing ""process"" Me: I'm going to practice drawing anime people! I'm going to draw Madoka! Me: *sketching* Me: Oh no. Me: Well her pigtails sort of look like ears. Me: *fixes pigtails* Spongebob voice: Two hours later... Me: THIS IS WHAT I INTENDED TO DRAW ALL ALONG. And here's something that I actually meant to draw. They're undead bros! This was for Twillie's Neopets Holiday Art Exchange thing. Also I tried to do that "draw it again!" thing where I redraw something from two years ago but my end product stays WORSE than what it was. I don't know what's wrong with me.

Bleh, I don't know why I bother to put these up, no one particularly cares about these characters and I can't draw, so I just sketch out the most bland poses and comps ever. This is another design for Lissandre, this time with a different dress and wavy hair!

Pssh naw, this is super nice! =D I love how you draw hair, even in sketch form.

Thank you, Thorn! Hair is always a sticking point for me so I'm glad it doesn't look bad. >> Anyway, more Neopets things. First, I colored in that sketch... it doesn't look as nice as the lineart would suggest but I tried. >> And next, I was possessed by the ghost of Huntress, because this looks suspiciously like her style.

And next, I was possessed by the ghost of Huntress , because this looks suspiciously like her style. Bugger, I thought I'd gotten my possession issue under control. (I think it might be the angle; I like using that angle xD) Also, because I'm the type to put off commenting until it feels too late to say anything and then I frequently end up not posting, shameonme: I'm very much a fan of Lissandre's expression both in the sketch and in the colored version. It's well nigh impossible to make any colored version look the way the sketch turned out (the struggle is real >3>) but the expression is the same in both cases and the personality shines through right there.

Huntress ... It does look to be the angle, now that you point it out. I think the pencil-style outlines also don't help it make it resemble your style less. x) And thank you! ^^ I spent a great deal of time trying to match the sketch as closely as possible--I find that I usually half-copy the sketch, "fixing" half the lines and leaving half as they are, resulting in something really roboting. Here, I tried to just be loyal to the lines. Except the arm, I changed the arm. >> IN OTHER NEWS, I have been trying to draw doge again. It has been failing miserably. So first I tried to actually draw a doge: It didn't work out. Next, I tried actually copying from references and then drawing my own Jeran. He still looks like a potato: I will never draw Jeran properly and it makes me sad. :-( I want cookies now because I feel discouraged... more than usual, anyway.

*throws cookies at Moni* SO I looooove your Jeran and he does NOT look like a potato!!! Even if he DID look like a potato, he would be THE CUTEST POTATO EVER. OMG CAN WE PLEASE HAVE A JERAN POTATO NOW?!? : ))))))))))) *throws more cookies* Joking aside, working from refs is a good way to practice! I like your personal style of drawing Jeran (in the above posts) as well as your referenced Jeran. Also, I love your pic of Lissandre! I think the composition is actually really well-balanced. It might have been a touch “boring” if she were facing us full-on, but by having her body turned slightly and her hand just beginning to be raised, you give the static image more context. She’s about to do something, and judging by the complacent smirk on her face, well...

Jeran is secretly a potato so if he looks that way to you then you drew him right. Unfortunately he looks nothing like a potato to me, so you might want to work on that. The end result is pleasing and cute, even if it's not a potato.

A Jeran potato?? You guys are MAD GENIUSES! (... be nice, it's some kid's art project.) And Caylista, Well, a large part of drawing is the automaticity of your "muscle memory" (well, that and your general skills of proportion and perception but the more skilled you are the more power it has in your associative machinery. xD) I supposed that if I were to practice drawing something, drawing from refs is a good idea because it bolsters your library with high-quality practice! x) And thank you for the comments on composition! I am slowly relearning some basic elements of it, aha. It is trickier than I remember it being! Lissandre's always up to something, so I'm glad the "off-balance" look helped it some, haha.

He's perfect.
He looks JUST like what an obsessed fan-child would create for their Meridellian Military Kindergarten art project. : D

Betcha anything that making tater-Jerans is a common art project in all Meridellian kindergartens, what with hero and symbol of the land and etcetera. Kinda like the hand turkey projects around Thanksgiving. >> Yeah, I'm a lazy bum who only ever does lineart when I have to, so scratchy pencil outlines are my jam xD Part of being a lazy bum is also that I don't ever follow the sketch very closely (if I did, it'd end up looking uncanny because I'd get too stuck following a given line to be able to see how it affects the overall image). I just draw twice, once with a pencil to get the idea down and once with the ink pen that kind of becomes its own drawing that uses the sketch as a guideline. If something goes really off, there's always digital tweaking. And since I've drawn a good million Lupes in my time, of course I also have to comment on Jeran xD He looks pretty non-potato-y to me (well, the non-potato version anyway) and if you hadn't labelled the reference and the drawing, I legit wouldn't have known the difference. I think what happens is that the muzzle is the most prominent part of a Lupe's face and it inevitably disappears due to foreshortening in front view, meaning their features go weirdly off. Which is why I go to great lengths to avoid drawing any Lupe head-on, and the closer I am to drawing one head-on, the more of a derpface I'm deliberately aiming to get. (admittedly quite often >__>)

xD You guys are funny! I could totally see potatoJeran being standard Meridellian art project. National Hero + National food = National art project! Huntress >> lazy bum nah man you're cool. And yeah! I think the reason why making a new drawing on top of a sketch doesn't work so well for me is that... I can't just ignore the sketch guidelines, so the new drawing becomes a Frankenstein's monster of the sketch+the new lines. I frequently suffer from the "my sketch looks better than my lineart" syndrome, so that's why I try to follow it as closely. Muzzles are my bane in general, and for some reason they're just that much harder with Lupes (as opposed to gelerts, where foreshortening isn't often an issue because they just have less stuff going on with their faces.) -- Since I have this goal of posting art with every post, have another thing. This time, it's a referenced landscape. Unfortunately, I used a grid to draw it because... I have trouble with proportions, okay? XDD My goal is to reduce the number of cells on the grid gradually to build up my confidence. xDD

Oh dude, I still use grids for some drawings too! Namely with self portraits or other face drawings that I put in my portfolio since I just have this urge to Get Them Right if supposed professionals might see them xD But yeah no, nothing wrong with grids, they are but another tool to use to enhance your art :3
That's still a good goal of improving your confidence, though, and sounds like a good way to go about it :3 And it's also a gorgeous drawing! Beautiful color scheme, and I love the minimalist approach you took to blocking the objects and space!

Omg, this is absolutely gorgeous! The colors are beautiful, and wow! There are just so many different shades and colors used! I love that effect of all of them having their own sections with an abrupt, rather than a blended, transition into the next color. I don't know how to explain it nicely, lol. Twillie put it better. xD
