I can only laugh at this in hysterics because the alternative is screaming.
Everyone, hang in there. It is going to be a rough four years but the US has survived chuckleheads before. But do forgive the rest of us if we laugh and stare in horror.
The UK now looks smart in comparison.

Yes, I've been on the verge of crazy laughter all day and I feel bad - it seems almost irreverent. I can only conclude that it's a coping mechanism on my part because the alternative would be locking myself up where I can't bother anyone else and screaming. Good luck America! I think the problem will not so much be in his actions as his way of executing them... I suspect the rest of the world will have to learn to laugh at him eventually, but it'll probably be a lot harder for you people...

I'm curious to see how long he lasts in politics, given his temperament and the fact that he knows nothing. President Apricot-face is in for a bit of a shock of he thinks business experience translates to being able to run a country.

I haven't gotten to the "verge of crazy laughter" stage yet. So far it's been "stare in horror". Maybe once all of this insanity finally processes in my mind....
Good luck to all my American friends. I suppose there's always the chance that he does something so unforgivably egregious (even for him) that it cuts his tenure short.

I just have to keep repeating to myself that I'll be okay because I'm white, male, and straight.
But I have a ton of friends who aren't, and I'm scared to death of what's going to happen to them.
And I need to get off facebook. The hatred coming from family is nightmarish.

President Apricot-face is in for a bit of a shock of he thinks business experience translates to being able to run a country. Yeah, I'm wondering how long it takes him before he stumbles into an impeachable offense. *fingers crossed it's the day after inauguration* I'm pretty bummed about this whole thing. My friend had to call the suicide hotline tonight, after this whole situation stressed her out too much. And I was gonna be applying to animation jobs overseas soon, but boy if this won't increase that competition like crazy. And gosh, now we only have Hong Kong to prevent Dormammu from taking us all to the Dark Dimension.

Aye, the situation is what it is now. All we can do at this point is pressure the hey out of the elected officials in order to mitigate anything outlandish that gets brought to the table. Remember the president isn't a king; this isn't a dictatorship. There is a system of checks and balances in play to limit what any one branch of the government can do, and even if them same party is dominating the executive and legislative branches, pressure from the voter base can go a long way.
It's not an ideal situation. But it isn't the end of the world. Not yet.

I am more worried about all you guys in the States than anything else. Please look after yourselves and don't let this drive you into despair. It looks very bleak, I know, but you are stronger than the witless orange moron or his cronies, and so is your country. Weather the next four years or so as best as you can and don't stop fighting for what you believe in.
I might not have much admiration for your country right now but I love all of you American NTWFers and I believe in you. You are better than your government and you will get through this. The key thing now is to hold Trumpet accountable.

I'm seeing a lot more optimism around then I'm willing to give it. Yes, they have all three branches. Last time that happened was 1928, the Great Depression. And with how the voter base is, and how the districts are drawn, and how few voter protections there are, I honestly can see this being 100 years of darkness. He can do what he want with a blank check by bullying and making the legislature go with his insane ideas, they've shown no courage in stopping him at all during the election, even at his worst moments, and the base eats it up.
I honestly think this is the end. They'll have all the branches, the courts, the laws. And considering the cowardice shown against him this whole time....
I really think this is the end of America. It's surprisingly easy to take over, and he might legit be the last president. Either through nuclear annihilation, or just declaring himself president-for-life. Who would stop him?

*sigh*
Yep, had a few acquaintances that had to call a suicide hotline here too, and I know multiple people who are legitimately concerned for their safety because they belong to a minority group. Racists were bolstered in the UK after Brexit and it will be orders of magnitude worse here. I respect the will of the people and all that but it doesn't change the fact that it was a very stupid or a very hateful decision. This decision was a racist, divisive one that will encourage deplorable dictators and sow discord all over the world.
Goodbye America, it was nice knowing you. I wish my parents had immigrated to Canada.

Hey. No. If Saturday Night Live can stand up to Trump and refuse to let him bully them into submission, so can we. He hasn't even been sworn in yet. It's way too early for doom clouds. Just take a deep breath and step back. Walk around outside. Play a favorite video game. Turn off CNN and your Facebook feed and all the other outlets raging about this. Remind yourself that the world is bigger than this one man and his absurd church of self adulation.
He'll alienate his followers. Even the good presidents do that. Very very few presidents are well liked while they are in office. People will turn on him. He'll isolate himself. There may be some hardship in the meantime, but we do not have to lie down and let the train run us over.
Things will be okay. Maybe not today, maybe not this year. But they will be okay.

Should I be worried about him imprisoning political opponents? Like, you know... Anyone who voted against him? ... Nah, the US military (and presumably law enforcement) can apparently ignore orders that are considered unlawful, like war crimes, detaining US civilians solely for having different political beliefs...

Should I be worried about him imprisoning political opponents? Like, you know... Anyone who voted against him? You mean imprisoning individual voters? I mean, for one, it'd be logistically impossible to imprison those kind of numbers, even for the U.S.. Second, I can't imagine that kind of thing, y'know, NOT causing a massive violent uprising. We do have checks and balances. I get the feeling when Trump slowly realizes how much power he doesn't have, he'll have a giant diva meltdown.

It's also worth noting the ballots are all anonymous. I don't believe anybody keeps a record of who votes for whom. You sign in at the polling place to account for yourself as having voted, but you don't put your name on the actual ballot. So it would be near impossible for Trump to actually determine who did or didn't vote for him short of word of mouth.
