I thought it was adorable! I'm not sure why it didn't make it in... then again, I also saw a few comics on the Reddit Neo thread that were absolutely amazing, and they didn't make it in either. Perhaps there were too many comics about trying to get the NT avatar already for that issue? Regardless, I thought it was pretty funny how you portrayed your pets as "defenders"! XD I guess the only suggestion I can make is to maybe base your comic on a topic other than trying to get the NT avatar? because I can't see anything with the art or punchline (or anything else, really...).

It would be possible to nitpick that there doesn't seem to be much context attaching the two concepts (the idea seems to be that they get dressed up as a teaser for a compelling comic idea so the owner can get the avatar, but they aren't co-ordinated enough to make it work?), and could maybe be utilized better if, say, the pets notice the owner's scheme and decide to turn their "Defender powers" against her, or something like that. But like Zoey, I think the art is great and on an average issue it could easily make it in, but the pitfall is that the comic's story is focused around your character trying to get the avatar. Especially since it's specifically for Issue 700 (which to begin with is a lot more competitive than the average Times specifically because so many people want that avatar), it's probably a gag that CQ tired of quickly. I also seem to remember reading in an older Editorial that users of all ages were supposed to get a similar shot (relative to their skill) at being published at any given issue, so if that's still how it works, it may be that your "bracket" was full as well, more than about the execution of the comic itself. And, of course, I'm not sure when you submitted it, but if it was submitted too close to the issue itself that may also be part of it. One thing I observed when I was still doing comics is that it's easier to get into a special issue once you have already established yourself as a recurring artist or show that you can continue an interesting story, rather than submitting a one-off which you're expecting to receive some reward for (be it an avatar, a special item, or whatever). I think a story arc or even just putting out characters that readers can get familiar with and keep coming back to is a good way to get your name in there. It may be too late for this special issue, but I feel like it would be pretty much guaranteed for you to get in 750 if you submit a few in between now and then, to flesh out these characters and give them some prior appearances to build up to the special issue. If you were to use the Defenders of the NT concept, for example, you could make a story arc out of it (with whatever tone you want--even if it involves the pets failing terribly at the very thing they're named for), make them familiar faces to the NT comic readership, and for issue 750 potentially do a retrospective on how the group got together in the first place (which could basically reuse the concept from this one--the owner used them as a get-avatar-quick scheme--and depending on what is revealed about their characters by then, it could come completely out of the blue or explain a lot). Another idea would be to keep the current idea as an "introduction" comic, but then develop it into a comic series afterwards--not only would you have the benefit of showing that you're committed enough to develop an idea further or put in more than one comic worth of effort, but then it also really wouldn't matter which gets in which issue as long as there's overlap with 750 (or 800 or Christmas or whatever special issue you're aiming for). Honestly, the comic you showed here reads like a teaser for a compelling series and thus is practically begging for a sequel, so maybe you'd have better luck if you submit a few at a time.

I actually submitted at the very last minute, sigh, I admit it. I'm slow and I almost couldn't make it =/
I've submitted another one in the meantime and they said they will publish eventually, but I like your idea of making various comics on my pets and turn them into established characters, I will focus on that cuase I think I can come out with lots of stories, thank you! I have a question though, how do people submit serial comics?? Like, do they submit part 1 and if gets accepted they submit part2 hoping that ets accepted too and so on??? Or do they submit everything at the same time???

You would submit all the parts at once, one comic at a time. ^.^ Like for a three-part comic, make a new submission, be sure to label it as "Part 1" after the title, then make another submission, put "Part 2" at the end of the title, and the very last one label it as "Part 3" after the title, and you might want to note it's the "End" somewhere in the title or comments section. Yeah, try to submit the comic early for the big 50th issues. think the stats were like, 213 comics or something, and out of those, about 40 got in... Good luck with your series! I personally am a fan of established characters, 'cause it shows a lot of dedication. ^.^

Or do they submit everything at the same time??? Yep, that's probably what happened then--timing is a big factor. xD Looking forward to seeing your work in the Times, in any case! In general it doesn't matter too much how you submit comics, but the recommendation has always been to submit a complete arc all at once--of course, it depends on the size of the arc, and if you plan for the series to continue indefinitely or be more slice-of-life style, you can get away with sending one or two installments at a time (particularly at the start if you want to communicate "this will be a series"), and it may even be better to do so if there isn't a very natural way to split it up. (My own experience was one very long arc of about 30 comics, so it wouldn't be feasible to send that many at the same time.) But if you know a particular story is going to cap at, say, 5 parts or less, you should probably send them all at once. It's a bit more flexible than the written series in that way, but the guidelines are kind of similar--if it's tremendously long, you can split it into a few "encapsulated" parts and submit one series at a time, or submit a number of individual short stories.

Yup! What Coaster said. If you've got a continuous story that requires following the plotline in each installment, send it in all at once. if the "storyline" is more like the non-continuous plotlines in, say, Garfield, or Peanuts, or such (ie. doesn't require prior knowledge), then it's better to send it in as its own short.

Thank you so much for all your advice guys! Being not english it's almost impossible for me to write stories or articles, so comics are my only chance to get published, ehehe, and a plot seems like the best option =)

how exactly do you get the avatar, does it have to be issues ending in 00 like that? The anniversary issue avatar is awarded for getting into a fiftieth increment issue. Ergo, issue 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, and so on.
