...Doormat? Jensa suddenly wanted to ask what his parents had been thinking. Except it looked like he really wanted to go somewhere. "Oh, OK. See you!" She began to sidle around Doormat's frozen figure, then stopped abruptly when she remembered that the sandwich shop was in the same direction he apparently wanted to go. She turned around and walked quickly away, so as not to make him more uncomfortable than he apparently already was. Jensa got a forearm-sized sandwich which she promptly inhaled. When you did strenuous gymnastics and other performances for six to eight hours a day, eating like a horse was just a necessity. The rest of the day went very well. She experimented with several different acts involving pencils, and managed to get a good haul from both the afternoon-lunch-break crowd and the evening-commute crowds. This new pencil-balancing skill was a real winner, but she might have overused it? People would get bored if that was the only thing she did, so she'd need to keep it in reserve and only bring it out occasionally. Well, that would work just fine. She had plenty of other acts in her repertoire, and occasional new Skills from Ene meant a slow but steady stream of new material. As the sun crept toward the top of the Wall, Jensa considered heading back home. There was a mystery to unravel. Plenty of mysteries, in fact, but she especially hoped to make progress on the secret hovering banks hidden behind the clouds. Although for once, she didn't feel like indulging her silly hobby. Because there was something even stranger to investigate. Another person in the square. She had been watching him most of the day. She almost would have said that he had been competing with her for tips, except he didn't seem to be getting any money. Jensa walked up to Laffz. "I want to play The Game!" she said, tweaking his nose. Jensa awkwardly walks in the same direction as Doormat ( Thorn), eats a sandwich, gets money, and finally tries to play The Game with Laffz ( Kozma).

In an unknown corner of the school, where the dust made interesting patterns against the heavy green curtains, a small, black-haired girl knelt giggling over a radio. She turned the knobs with deft fingers, leaning forward now and then to listen, a look of wide-eyed eagerness on her face. When the light caught her face, it illuminated a giant birthmark on her cheek, like a splash of rust-coloured paint. The town doctor, Pixie, had been concerned at first about the mark, but had then decided that it was nothing harmful. Just an unfortunate shadow hanging over an otherwise sweet little face. Rusty's parents worked from morning to night in one of the town's factories. They owed money for reasons that Rusty didn't understand. Sometimes on the way to school, she would pass by personages like Liou, and wonder why it was that so much toil went into producing shiny shoes and shiny fabrics for haughty people. "Maybe I should go to work to help you pay the debt," she said to her parents one day, as they sat around the kitchen table eating cabbage soup. But her mother instantly shot her a severe look. "When I was your age, all I wanted was an education, and I couldn't have it. You ought to be grateful now that you have a chance at an education." "Study well, and that will be your best reward to us," her father added. Rusty stared down at the table and didn't say another word. She dutifully memorized the facts and dates, learned to do the problem sets, brought home A after A and watched the smiles on her parents' faces. But still there was a restlessness in her, and when she found the old radio on a junk pile earlier that morning, a thrill came into her body that she had almost never felt before. Now, in her secret corner, the volume of the radio was tuned to the lowest possible setting, to reduce the risk of detection by Draco, not that the old teacher would bother to come to this part of the school building anyway. No, this little corner, with its faded carpeting and dusty light, was all Rusty's. None of the cool kids ever came here. Nor any of the teachers really. All that the teachers seemed to care about was getting through their boring syllabuses and getting the kids to pass, and Rusty had no problems passing. She could recite all the propaganda poetry by heart. She knew exactly which year and which day the council members were "elected." She could sing "Safe Behind the Wall" without a single mistake. Yadda yadda. As long as she showed up to exams and provided all the right answers, the harried teachers didn't mind that she missed so many classes. Rusty straightened up for a moment, frowning and turning the knobs again. The announcer, Thundy, was saying something about words on the wall. "Nothing to worry about," came that oft-repeated phrase. When adults used that tone of voice, there was always something to worry about. Rusty glanced at her watch. There were still two more hours of school. Maybe she could go into the town square and sneak around a bit. As long as no adults caught her and asked why she wasn't in school. She dug under the carpet for where she usually hid her adult clothes. She'd sniped them off the junk pile one day and washed them in the washroom next to the chemistry lab. When she wore them and put on the hat with the veil she looked like a little old lady. Walking carefully with little, old-lady steps, she passed out of a side-gate into the road. "Hoo, hoo, hoo! Won't you play The Game with me?"Rusty looked through her veil at a big, creepy grin. It was that town fool again. "No thanks," she said hastily, stepping aside and almost colliding with a red-haired teenage girl, who seemed to be heading in the direction of the school. Rusty is a small, black-haired girl with a giant, rust-coloured birthmark on her cheek. The adults in her life are too busy with adult stuff to pay attention to her. As long as she gets good grades, they are happy. Outside of getting said grades, she likes to skip class, tinker with stolen radios, and sneak around the town square disguised as a little old lady in a veiled hat. Today she's heard about the words on the wall, and has snuck into the square to investigate. She encounters Kozma and almost collides with Ginz ❤.

"A shame!" Laffz bemoaned. The thought of someone rejecting the chance to play The Game was quite burdensome to him. "Oh, ho!" cried Laffz after Jensa tweaked his nose. "Harm my poor nose, will you? I ought to harm YOURS!" Laffz then smiled. "So you want to play The Game? Great!" Laffz then proceeded to dance around joyously given that he had another individual willing to play The Game - hopefully this one would play it properly. "Now PLAY IT!" he demanded as he waited for Jensa to respond. Stephanie (swordlilly) rejects Laffz's offer to play the game and runs off. Fraze then comes up and tweaks the fool's nose and states that she wants to play The Game. Laffz responds with joy and tells her to play it.

Tierney sat near the scattered glass, slowly putting each shard into piles by color. She focused on that, occasionally gently running her fingers over the edges. She barely looked up when a girl of about her age strode up. “You! You could have injured me! You’re almost as clumsy as that stupid Cara! And I was thinking of buying that!”Tierney took a deep breath, staring the girl straight in the eyes. “Um, but you weren’t even here,” Tierney said quietly, picking up another shard of glass and holding it to the light before continuing, “And Cara is my friend, she was my classmate. That’s mean. Mean words upset the Wall.” Tierney stood up, still staring into Victoria’s eyes. She crossed her arms, standing up straight, before shaking her eyes and staring right past her at another thing on the shelf. “Can’t you buy this instead? And why do you gotta be so rude, anyway? Don’t you know I’m human too?” Tierney said, before leaning close to Victoria’s ear and whispering, “Unless you’re a fairy. Don’t worry, I believe in you.” With that, Tierney sat right back down near her pile of glass, waiting for her mother. While she waited, she undid her braid, letting her thick black hair cascade back into place. She smiled again at Victoria, and then started to re-braid her hair. “I can do yours, too, if you want me to,” Tierney said, before promptly letting her eyes unfocus as she braided. Tierney sasses Victoria ( Liou) a bit. >>;;

“Wha - what on the Wall are you doing." A pause. "I mean - what are you doing on the Wall?”Only half a minute into her brave ascent, Caraway Nix froze as a voice called out from below. A death grip on the moss-slicked bricks, she dared let herself glance down, but on account of the fact that she was just so clumsy, she promptly slipped and fell flat on her flat, average, unsexy butt. Hissing in pain, and scrambling for the stray arrows that bounced out of her sheath, Cara forced a neutral, innocent smile up at the woman who was gazing at her in equal parts suspicion and confusion. At least it wasn't someone she knew-- in Melville you knew everyone by sight at least, but Cara had such a silly poor memory and was just so bad with names, maybe it had to do with how clumsy she was!-- but that would matter if this woman dragged her to the Guard. "Oh." Cara batted her eyelashes in a way that would have been charming had she a charming bone in her average body, but instead it just came across as though she had something stuck in her eye. "I was just getting in my exercise for today! Climbing is very good for upper body strength, you know. But um. I think I... hurt myself when I fell. So I uh... probably should be going now. To the... doctor." She staggered to her feet-- and then winced when she realized that she really was hurt, it wasn't just an excuse, oh noooo!. "... My ankle. I think it's... sprained or..." Cara sighed miserably as she realized what this meant: with a sprained ankle, she wouldn't be able to climb the Wall for weeks! And with winter coming, no less! Oh the AGONY! Oh the WOE! The MISERY! Tears pricked in her boring emerald eyes. Now Rosemary was going to starve to death, this was just... this was just a death sentence! Oh, if only Cara were smarter and prettier and more athletic and also sneakier and sexier and better at climbing and better at falling and better at not crying, then none of this would be happening! "Adults don't understaaaand," she wailed to the woman, sobbing outright now. "What it's like to be an average orphan in charge of everythiiiiing!" Caraway falls off the wall, surprised by Aerona ( Tiger) calling out to her. Landing awkwardly on her ankle, she proceeds to have a mental breakdown. Good luck, Aerona.

Laurie felt herself being petted gently, much like the way someone would want to pet a turtle. That was nice. Laurie poked her head out of her turtleneck and smiled, although the words made sure she didn't feel 100% safe. She still felt safe around him that's for sure. Aside from the giant letters that SCREAMED death and foreboding, a gentler thought touched her mind. She recognized the thought as not her own, and embraced it. "Let's go--Uncle May's Bright Fellowship Park--There's something--show you."Laurie brightened. Were they going on another impromptu date? She took Carlos's hand like a small child and grinned. "Okay." She said, not bothering to use her thought-language. Laurie settled into the crook of Carlos's arm, breathing slowly and deeply. It was so intriguing how much an innocent physical touch could be as fulfilling as meditating. All sorts of thoughts about how complete she felt with the world bounced around in her mind, until one broke its surface. "Morris. Can't come to library--" Uh-oh. Already the message was starting to fade away and she couldn't go back to Boss without having delivered it. That would mean no pay for a week. She shot Carlos a distressed look that quickly evaporated. What he wanted to show her was something of grave importance. His aura said it all. Rapidly, she took off her yellow messenger scarf and placed it around a stranger's neck. "If you see Morris, tell him Erin Harvey's crazy cat can't meet him in the library because..." She paused. "There's no one to watch over Erin." That had to be it. "You can take the payment for delivering the message. Just take the scarf to Boss when you're done!" Laurie shouted cheerily. With her conscience completely cleared, she practically skipped along to the park, a rather confused partner in tow. Laurie agrees to go with Carlos ( RielCZ) to the park, as she senses something urgent in this request. Knowing she can't simply give up on a message unpunished, she passes it along to Doormat ( Thorn) to deliver and get paid for his efforts. And she really thinks she's going to get her messenger scarf back.

“Okay,” Laurie said. “Yay!” Carlos grinned widely, almost unsettlingly so. But Laurie thought it was cute, she had told him that before. Just as he thought her turtle thing was cute. And then she was in her usual spot under his arm. Ah, how wonderful the world was… Well OK, he couldn’t say that. How wonderful Melville wa… Nope still not that either. How wonderful his life was in that moment. Yeah that was fine. And then she was out of his arm and talking to that Doormat fellow. What did he even do? It’s like the council authorized his purpose to be “that from which others take out their issues”. Laurie tied the scarf around him. Yellow. The colors of the messengers. Maybe he was a messenger and forgot his scarf. Or something…? And then his roommate was skipping off to the park and pulling him awkwardly. Well this was certainly a change from the norm, for the otherwise timid little Laurie he knew. It seemed as though all was well in her life, too. A small smile broke on his face. *** The couple arrived on Fellowship Avenue, one of the oldest areas in Melville and a popular tourist location. According to the commemorative plaque outside the large iron gate entrance to the area: “Fellowship Avenue used to be a poor industrial sector until the factories were taken over by the early council to vastly improve the lives of the workers and make life GOOD! While the factories in this sector no longer employ, they stand testament to the commitment of the council. This can be evidenced by the many murals among the old factory walls of our wonderful leaders throughout time and space and into the future!” Carlos didn’t care about that info, however; though he knew how to get to his destination, it was the next plaque that was important to him. “Uncle May’s Bright Fellowship Park can be found North and South of Here.” It was evident the “Uncle May” part of the plaque was printed to another piece of metal and fixed overtop of someone else. The park’s name seemed to change with whomever was leader of the council at any particular point in time. “Follow me now,” Carlos said to his girlfriend, stifling a giggle. And then he almost walked into a guy. “Hey,” the guy said as he handed him a coupon for a free round of mini golf. “Er… I don’t need this. But Joan Wrigley from the Melville Tourism Agency… wants you there or something?” Carlos just stared at him and the guy practically shoved it in his hands. “Look man I hate minigolf but she was right the paintings here are really nice.” And then he ran off. Tourism Agency, eh…? Well, if all went to plan here today, it would be nice to go on a honeymoon trip sometime. He wasn’t much into golf either but he stuffed the coupon in his pocket. It had the MTA logo on it. Going north and south they arrived at the little clearing along the river. This was one of the few actual parks in Melville, commissioned by the council to be a… well, simply put, a place for public enjoyment. The water rushed slowly and the trees swayed slightly in the wind. ”It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” he thought to her. They walked a little more along the promenade and then upward a small hill where a large tree grew—a tree supposedly older than Melville itself—where he then got on one knee. He slicked back his dark brown and straight hair with his left hand whilst his right entered the pocket of his jacket. He opened the little box to reveal a shimmering jewel on a ring; he wasn't sure where the jeweler found stones such as these within the walls but he supposed it wasn't his purpose to know. “Laurie…” Hesitation gripped him at first but then he remembered two things: this was the anniversary they’d moved in together and they’d never had a bad time on it before; and the writing on the wall. In the off chance Melville was about to descend into chaos—but he didn’t want to think about that—he didn’t want to be caught in the chaos without her. Laurie… “Laurie Blackwell,” he started with renewed ambition, his voice bold and unfaltering. “Will you marry me?” Carlos wonders about what Doormat ( Thorn) actually does before following Laurie ( Mostly Harmless (flufflepuff)) to Fellowship Avenue. He's all happy. *** They reach Fellowship Avenue and some history is explained. Then, he runs into one of the gossipers from Joan's ( Lizica) MTA, who gives Carlos his coupon for mini golf. Carlos thinks maybe he'll go there to inquire about destinations to take Laurie on a honeymoon... The couple reach Bright Fellowship Park. It's nice and nearby the river. Next to a tree older than Melville itself, Carlos proposes to Laurie.

Doormat was suddenly very confused. Jensa had left, and that was all well and good, though he supposed he could have said goodbye a little more kindly...he didn't want people not liking him, because then they might tell other people to not like him; and then it would be an endless cycle of people-not-liking-Doormat-and-maybe-trying-to-tell-him-that-and-not-leaving-him-alone. Which would be a mouthful to say, so he was glad he didn't have to say it aloud. But he'd hardly gotten two steps when a stranger, whom he'd thought he would be able to slip innocuously by, suddenly turned and wrapped a yellow scarf around his neck. Doormat froze, and blinked, hands raised halfway to the (admittedly helpfully warm) scarf. And now this stranger was talking. About Morris. He had to deliver a message to Morris. Who was Morris? Did he know a Morris? He didn't even know this woman! How would she know if he knew "Morris"? "Wait!" he yelped after her, as she disappeared through the crowd with her companion in tow. "Who's Morris? Who's your Boss? What am I supposed to be doing?!" He glanced miserably done at one end of the scarf, gripped tightly in his left hand. "Could you please repeat the message...?" he tried, though Doormat doubted she could hear him any longer. Erin's cat can't meet...Morris...somewhere because there's nobody to watch over...Erin. Or Arran? No, definitely Erin...What am I supposed to do?!Doormat has barely finished talking to Jensa ( Fraze) when a strange woman ( Mostly Harmless (flufflepuff)), accompanied by her roommate ( RielCZ), appears and tosses a scarf at him. She tells him to deliver a message to Morris. Doormat has no idea who Morris is and so stands there, extremely confused and worried as to what he could have got himself into.

Although Cori kept walking, Sebastian walked with her, insisting that she change her mind and giving all the reasons why she should. She gave up on giving back the business card, instead sliding it into her pocket as the man continued. “So you can start by telling me your name. Otherwise, I’ll just have to call you bae all the time.”Well, she couldn't have that. "It's Coriander," she said shortly. Normally, she would have an addendum where she would tell the person she's introducing herself to to just call her 'Cori' for short. But Coriander wasn't sure if she wanted to go that far with this man yet. Especially when he was still insisting that she drop her siblings off at the orphanage. Her stomach clenched at the thought, and she couldn't help but scowl at it. Leaving her siblings, really? Sure they could give her trouble, but then she couldn't imagine doing anything else. Not after so long. Then he started to be actually a little charming about holding his breath for her for a lifetime... And theeeeen he started going on about being a personal life coach for everyone, or something like that. “How about we go somewhere tonight? Somewhere fun!”...It was almost tempting to Cori. As insensitive as the man was, he was certainly persistent, and going out for even just one night did sound like a nice break. It had been a very long time since she'd been on a date. Though it wasn't realistic, as she'd still have to find someone to watch Cara and provide dinner for her family... “Oh, I know! There’s a party in my pants, and you’re invited!”...Aaaaaaand there went all vestiges of interest of using him as an excuse to have a night out. She let out a scoff. "A party in your pants? Really? That's what you went with?" Her tone was flat at first before she continued. "Look, I really am busy. You say you'd wait forever for me, but that's just not true. No one who's ever said that meant that. Besides, you'll be waiting a long time because I'm not leaving my family. I'm responsible for them, and without me... I just, I've spent all this time looking after them, and I'm not about to stop now. Find someone else to spend the night with you; I'm not going. Not like I'd be able to anyway." Cori rejects Sebastian's ( Jayeee) advice--particularly the advice about abandoning her sisters--and refuses to go out with him.

"Now PLAY IT!"Jensa had spent the past few hours planning what she would do, depending on the response she got. With a swift, practiced motion, she drew two plates from her bag, spinning each one on one finger before bowing toward Laffz and carefully placing them on the ground, one in front of each of them. She reached into the bag again and removed a pack of playing cards. She still wasn't very good at card tricks, but she spread them up one arm and shuffled the deck three times. Then arching over backward, she dealt five cards onto each plate. "Five card draw," she said, breaking into a wide grin while still leaning backwards. "And of course, jokers are wild!" Jensa plays Laffz's ( Kozma's) game, and decides that the game is Poker for Weirdos.

The evening was drawing close and the sun was low in the sky, its lower edge just starting to brush the Wall. Sampson was winding down the radio broadcast, the final rendition of Safe Behind the Wall went out and he keyed the microphone. "Well folks that's just about all we have time for today and what a day it's been! Remember to keep an eye out for those acting suspiciously around the Wall, after all it's here to keep us safe, and anyone that wishes to harm the Wall wishes harm upon us and our families. But do not fret, the Council and the city guard are here to protect us! Don't forget to tune in tomorrow for our exciting coverage of the Wall Ball semi final. This has been KMLV with your host, Sampson Thorpe, goodnight loyal citizens!" He then began flipping switches, powering down the various components of transmitter and seconds later the mains themselves were tripped and all power in the station winked out. Sampson collected some papers and placed them in a tattered briefcase and grabbed his walking stick. On his way out he made some small talk with some of the technicians and support staff. Exiting the station, it was only a short walk to Sampson's apartment and he made his way slowly in the fading light. He waved at some people he recognised and picked up some groceries with his ration tickets at a Council-operated food store. Before long he had made it to his apartment and took the rickety elevator up to the third floor. He shuffled into his apartment and placed the bag of groceries on the kitchen counter. The apartment was a small affair, but roomy enough for a single person. He sat on the couch and massaged the aches from his right leg. It had been a long day, but they were getting shorter in this time of year, by the time winter arrived, he would be only doing a 7 hour broadcast. Summer was definitely a more trying time, but all the reports of crime and sabotage were helping to make the work days a little more stressful. The next day would bring more challenges, but the live broadcast was sure to be interesting. He quickly poured himself a small nightcap and fixed a small plate of potatos and vegetables. Sleep would soon follow. All in a day's work for the media. Sampson signs off for the evening and heads home.

Victoria noticed the startling green of the girl's eyes and pursed her lips. Those green-eyed people all thought they were so special. Victoria didn't mind being stared at, though. She was probably the nicest thing that most people in town would see in months, so she might as well let them enjoy that rare pleasure. "And who are you even supposed to be? A friend of Cara's? Don't be ridiculous, what kind of loser would be friends with that whiny brat? Ah, but if you went to that miserable excuse for a school, that would explain why I haven't seen you around the respectable areas of town." She ignored the rest of the junk on the shelves, waiting for the girl to finish leaning into her and settle back on the floor where she belonged. "A fairy, sweetheart? No, I'm not a fairy." She gave a cold smile. "I'm a queen. And you'd better believe that." She smoothed her skirt over her legs, inspecting them for invisible shards. "And watch out for all that glass. These legs are far too precious, you know, I have to be on top form! If I get injured you will be held accountable and my father will hear about it. Why, you ought to be punished for going around destroying others' property. Luckily for you, I'm feeling very generous today." She took a small step closer so as to loom over the girl, practically raining disdain over her. "I will let it slide if you make it up to me over the next few days. Just a helping hand here and there, I'm a busy woman and I haven't got all day." She scoffed at the girl's flowing dark hair and flipped her own, turning towards the exit. "No, braiding won't be necessary, I only let the best stylist in town touch my locks. You had better clear that mess, and watch yourself." She strode out of the store without wasting another moment and went on her way, eager to return to places and people worth her attention. Victoria forgives Lizzie, so nice! And she's back out of the shop and off to wherever.

Laurie's heart stopped. The man she'd moved in with five years ago, who'd always protected her, who'd helped her find herself more than she'd ever let on--heck, the guy who she knew so well she could communicate with him without speaking--asked her something that made her head all fuzzy. Carlos was still on one knee, expectant, the intricate little gem on the ring waiting right along with him. The answer seemed to want to burst right out of her. "Y--" Laurie stopped. That person she'd passed by and given her scarf to...didn't seem like he knew what I was talking about. Did he even know who Boss was? What if she lost her job forever because of that one message? What if that meant her reputation would be sullied as someone who couldn't even deliver messages? What if everyone treated Carlos badly too and he had to work even harder all because of one silly mistake?! Laurie tried to breathe in and out slowly, focusing hard to settle down her raging chakras, but it was no use. The potential disasters of getting married before fixing the message issue with the scarf were far too great! "I'd like to marry you, really I would, I just...I have to find him." Laurie Allende... She toyed with the name once more in her head, tasting it as she often had when Carlos wasn't looking or listening. She immediately bristled. Could he hear her? That was the thing about telepathy, she really couldn't tell whether or not Carlos could hear what she was thinking. Oh, HECK. "Yes!" She threw her arms around him, feeling warmth seep into her. "...Now if you excuse me, I have to get my scarf back." With the speed that only Messengers could truly carry, she left Carlos standing in Uncle May's Bright Fellowship Park. The last thing she heard in her mind, growing fainter by the second, was, " Well shoot, I didn’t expect that to happen...”Laurie, after much deliberation, accepts the proposal, but immediately leaves her fiance( RielCZ) stranded to get her scarf back from Doormat ( Thorn). Her mind shifts into a Twilight-esque Lesson-Zero esque chain reaction about what will happen to her and Carlos if she doesn't get it back, so leave him she does. But briefly.

First he visited Uncle May's Bright Fellowship Park, admiring the old factory buildings in particular. He enjoyed the murals, but marveled at the size of the facility. How many people would have worked there? He figured if you did your spacing right the entire population of Melville could fit inside. But for that many workers, just imagine how many customers there had to be! The thought of so many people was baffling. As he walked along he noticed Carlos Allende ( RielCZ) and Laurie Blackwell ( Mostly Harmless (flufflepuff)). A good couple. Carlos was a very handsome man; Drale counted Laurie as quite lucky. He left the area to give them some privacy. Next he went to the antique and pawn store. He’d been there numerous times before, usually not finding what he was looking for. Still, people died and family heirlooms were eventually given to descendants who didn’t care about them. That’s when they came here, for the truly appreciative to rescue them. He saw a handful of pre-wall items, and stopped to admire them. "Exquisite, though not what I'm looking for. Not exactly." During the hottest part of the day Drale leaves his workshop to meander around town. He goes to the park and sees Laurie Mostly Harmless (flufflepuff) and Carlos ( RielCZ) together, and he leaves to give them privacy. He visits the antique and pawn store.
