“Oh, come on - at least my hitting them was conceivably physically possible. Besides, I didn’t say you should follow my example; you know as well as I do that I have my own carriage-full of flaws and issues.” Leif tilted his head at Sieg’s nostalgia. “That is quite a one-eighty. But it might not be a bad idea to let a bit of that kid back in,” he said with a shrug. The motion sent a twinge of pain through the pull aching in his chest and Leif crossed his arms almost automatically. “I’m sure you’ll find a good balance. Sooner rather than later, I hope.” Sieg slumped down a bit as he spoke of Bern and his adventures with Orrin; despite his posture, he seemed to remember the experience fondly. “I’m sure the Bernians who had to deal with those monsters would disagree. And you seemed a lot happier the next time I saw you after that, I recall. Once you’d had time to recover from being a Bernian hero, anyway.” Half the time I wonder if those two are the most powerful lords in Kyth or a pair of schoolchildren trying to establish who's dad can beat up who."Leif laughed a bit, leaning back in his chair so the front legs lifted a few centimeters from the ground. “That’s an apt description.” The half-elf suddenly shook his head, and Leif realized how tired the half-elf looked. “Sieg, are you all right?” Leif glanced out the window, and saw that the moon had moved some since they’d started talking; he was surprised a healer hadn’t come in by now to check on Sieg. “I can go if you need to get to sleep.” Technically, Leif knew, he ought to be getting some sleep himself. The pull wasn’t going to go away while he sat here talking. But being able to talk with Sieg, have some confirmation that his friend was recovering, was doing more than enough to keep him awake. “I guess I should have asked this before, but is there anything I can get or do for you, since the healer seems to have run off into the night?” More chatting yeah! and then Leif notices Sieg is getting tired and says he can head out if Sieg needs, before being like “Oh, yeah, maybe I should have asked the bedridden guy if he needed anything.”

“You do, but it's just kind of funny to hear you criticizing me for the exact same things my mother criticizes you for,” Sieg pointed out. “I think we can mutually agree that feeling guilty is easier hen feeling pride- even if pride is more pleasant. I'll work on it if you work on it, de-e-eal?” The word “deal” was interrupted by a massive yawn, and Sieg scowled a bit. Leif seemed to notice the knight's flagging energy, because he remarked, “ Sieg, are you all right? I can go if you need to get to sleep.” The half-elf grinned sheepishly, giving a helpless shrug. “I think I need to sleep, but frankly I don't really want to. I've been doing almost nothing but sleeping for the past several days, and it's been good to see a friendly face instead of that... less than sympathetic woman who was assigned to me as a healer.” A flash of realization hit him, and the knight winced, “But I imagine you're probably tired too, considering with all the curses you needed to break you must be pretty badly pulled...” That realization was not a pleasant one. The knight felt a bit selfish for wanting to keep the conversation going when Leif was probably in a lot of pain. But when the archmage offered to get Sieg anything if he needed it, the half-elf couldn't help chuckling. “As if saving my life and arranging to have my medical expenses covered wasn't enough. In all seriousness I'm fine, mostly. I'm current on all my medicines, not really hungry just now, and for a change I'm not in any pain. The healer would probably try to turn me on my side at this point, she's been doing it every few hours. I wasn't entirely clear why, she was vague as usual, something about bed sores. But I'm not going to ask you to try and pick me up and turn me over, even as much weight as I've lost that's not likely to be a fun task.” He shrugged, closing his eyes almost despite himself as he spoke, though his voice was still pretty lucid. “I honestly think she figured since I was asleep most of the time anyway, she could take a chance to get some rest herself. She's probably only been getting scant rest since this all started. It doesn't excuse her acting like a badger with a briar in it's paw, but at least it would explain why she's nowhere to be found now.” A thought seemed to occur to the knight, because he peeled one eye open to glance in Leif's direction. "If you get the chance in the morning, maybe send a letter to Mama? She's probably climbing the walls at Marson's by now, if your original missive to her was as vague as you implied. I'd do it myself but," he waved one hand in the air, "My fingers don't really work for holding anything smaller then my palm right now. I'm pretty sure even if I could grip a pen, I couldn't write with it." I'm not *yaaaaawn* tired! (ι´Д`)ノ

Leif nodded in agreement, waiting for Sieg’s yawn to finish before he said, “Deal. Your mother will be so proud of us, making plans to stem our guilt complexes without her being here.” Sieg confessed that he ought to sleep, but promptly listed all the reasons he wasn’t interested in doing so. Before Leif could make some remark about losing reputation as the prickly and scowling archmage to the healer - though in truth he’d grown much more comfortable with and fond of being thought of as friend - Sieg winced and said, “But I imagine you're probably tired too, considering with all the curses you needed to break you must be pretty badly pulled...”Stopping himself from shrugging again, Leif replied, “Not too badly. I’m not jumping to cast spells, but the healers made sure to keep the curse-breaking a bit spaced-out, and they’ve been feeding me like a hog they plan to serve at a feast.” He flexed his fingers a bit. “It was just bad enough that I couldn’t sleep - but it’s nowhere near as bad as I felt by the end of the Coronation.” When Sieg mentioned the healer wanting to have him turn over, and added that he didn’t think Leif would find it an enjoyable task, Leif admitted, “You’re probably right. Let’s be honest, even missing half your blood you could probably still take me down in a fist-fight.” Leif might make a devoted hobby out of hoisting birds with wingspans the size of grown men, but birds were not as heavy as they looked, and Sieg was definitely the more muscular of the two men. “I might be able to use magic to do it, but...there’s probably a healer in one of the other rooms who I could ask to help instead. That might be better for both of us.” He made a noise of distaste at Sieg’s comments about the healer, thinking that tiredness was no excuse for treating a patient like they were...well, like the briar in said badger’s paw. He didn’t say so aloud, though, noticing Sieg had closed his eyes and wondering if it might be best to just let the half-elf get to sleep. But Sieg opened an eye to give Leif a request. “Of course - I should probably have done that sooner, to be honest. I’ll let her know what happened...except for that one part. Anything else, any personal messages you’d like me to pass on?” He unwound one arm from his chest and carefully reached for his satchel to pull a quill and parchment free; best not to trust his memory alone. Guess what? Sieg says stuff…and Leif responds to it! With various amounts of snark, no less! =0 Though he’s thinking he probably ought to let Sieg get some sleep sooner rather than later.
He also agrees to write a letter to Morgaine and asks Sieg if there’s any message he’d like Leif to pass on.

At Leif's comment about eating like a hog, a mischievous look crossed Sieg's face. "At least your breath will be sugary enough that Kirin should be all over you when you get back." The subject shifted to Leif's inability to turn Sieg over. When the archmage commented that even as weak as Sieg was the knight could probably win a fist fight, the half-elf laughed bitterly, "I'm going to lose a good deal of muscle mass before all of the rehabilitation is over. Laying in bed all day is not exactly great exercise. Once I'm back on my feet and in control of all of my limbs it's going to take a pretty rigorous re-training regiment for me to get back up to combat fitness." He lifted a hand tiredly, demonstrating that his fingers weren't all curling properly. "And I need to be able to make a fist to win a fist fight." He yawned again, and in a lighter tone he added, "And besides, you'd have a stunning spell off before I even managed to land more then two punches. There's a reason knights usually tackle mages in teams of at least three. I promise I won't punch you though- only think how unhappy Kirin would be with me if I marred your beautiful face." He thought for a moment when Leif asked him if he had any personal messages for his mother, then said, "I'll give you something that she'll know for sure is from me- not that I doubt she'd believe you but it will reassure her all the same." He rattled off a small string of elvish words, then slowly went through them one at a time, spelling them with Kythian letters. "Basically that means 'I'm alive, you can stop panicking, and tell Rosalie I'm alive so /she/ stops panicking. And eat something because I know you haven't been.'" he chuckled, letting both eyes close again. "I know you don't speak any Elvish, and I'm sure she also knows it, so it'll be obvious that part of the message is from me." The knight sighed, his muscles relaxing visibly as exhaustion settled over him like a cloak. In a soft mutter he said, "I'm still not convinced the healers aren't slipping me something. Even when I've been hurt before I never slept th-this," He yawned again, "much!" Sieg makes dumb jokes, and we're close to wrapping this up I think.

"At least your breath will be sugary enough that Kirin should be all over you when you get back,” Sieg said with a smirk. “Why do you think I’ve been letting them feed me so much?” Leif said with a grin of his own. He felt another pang of homesickness, however; it was probably going to be at least a week by the time everything was settled here and he reached Medieville - and Kirin - again. He should write Kirin a letter, too, now that he was going to have time and energy to write something coherent. Leif wished he hadn’t made the comment about the fistfight when Sieg revealed that it was going to take him even longer to get back into fighting form that Leif had assumed - but the half-elf quickly turned it right around on the archmage. “Casting magic would be cheating. Against Courdonians is one thing...” Leif rolled his eyes at the ‘beautiful face’ comment, but only remarked, “I’d say it’s unfair to tease me about Kirin when you don't have a significant other for me to return the favor - but that would imply I was running short of material.” Leif raised his eyebrows as Sieg gave him a string of elvish words for Morgaine. Luckily, Sieg remembered that Leif didn’t know the language, and spelled the words out slowly. Leif carefully transcribed them near the bottom of the page, trying to guess how the words would be pronounced and quite glad he didn’t have to try relaying this message by mouth. “She knows I don’t speak it,” he agreed, adding an addendum above the elvish to indicate that it was from Sieg. “She speaks to Rust and Mercury in elvish sometimes and I’ve asked what she’s told them.” He almost mentioned that he had finally seem Mercury’s invisibility trick, and was now curious to see what talents elven-bred raptors might have, but Sieg was already on the verge of falling asleep again. It probably wasn’t good to start a conversation Leif could probably keep up for hours if allowed. "I'm still not convinced the healers aren't slipping me something. Even when I've been hurt before I never slept th-this much!" the half-elf complained with a yawn. “Well, to be fair, a decade’s worth of old injuries opened up, so technically it’s like all those times you’d been hurt, all at once,” Leif pointed out quietly. Tainted food or not, Sieg was quickly sucumbing to exhaustion no matter how much he fought it. Leif heard a door opening down the hallway; after a moment of muted talking, the door closed again, and another opened. Probably a healer making nightly rounds, Leif thought. Perfect; he could ask them about turning Sieg onto his side when the healer reached the half-elf’s room. He knew he should probably get back to bed after that was taken care of, but the pull hadn’t really subsided any and he was awake enough that he’d need to wind his brain back down, anyway. Leif moved the quill to the top of the parchment and started carefully writing the letter to Morgaine. “Get some rest, Sieg. Just...don’t expect any singing from me.” Teasing, letter-writing, and time for bed!

Sieg snorted softly at Leif's jab towards his height, but didn't dignify the remark with a reply. Instead he shifted slightly, so that what little of his back was still propped against the back of the bed slid down and he was lying flat on it again. He was half asleep by that point, but roused just enough when Leif started talking again to hear him say " Get some rest, Sieg. Just...don’t expect any singing from me." The half-elf smiled, though his eyes were still firmly closed. His brain filter already shut down by his exhaustion, he said, "That's fine. I haven't needed to be sung to sleep since I was nine years old. Though Mama still did it anyway; she and Papa wrote this song together that they'd sing us to sleep with when we were kids. I still know it by heart, so if I wanted to I could just sing it to myself. It's in Elvish, and it has a bit of an off-meter, but I think it'd get across even if you can't really understand it." Leaning his head to the side so that his face was half buried in the pillow he started to softly croon in Elvish. "Fly, fly, precious child The sky is clear The wind is mild Little Raven boy of mine Off you go, the night is thine On past the stars, Over the moon, On wings of love, From Mama hewn, With endless strength From Papa's arms, To shield you from all the night's harms, But should you need to land, don't fret, And don't... for... get..." His voice trailed off, and it seemed for a moment as if he'd finally lost his fight to stay awake. Then suddenly, very softly, he said, "I'd never really appreciated before how soothing a heartbeat feels. Thanks Leif." Then, finally, the half-elf sighed in surrender and sleep crashed over his mind like a title wave. Sieg's too sleepy to filter what he's saying anymore, and is somewhat embarrassingly honest and corny. He sings the lullaby Morgaine wrote for him, partially because I wanted to show at least PART of the real version of it (in canon we saw a modified version Morgaine was using to comfort him after discovering his guilt complex. Obviously she didn't sing all that stuff about tears and letting go of grief to Sieg when he was a child trying to fall asleep.)
Then the dork knight finally, finally conks out. Enjoy it while it lasts Leif, he'll be back to giving you a hard time in a few hours!
