Any astronomy news is good news, I say! Thanks for sharing!
I wonder if I can see it... might be too much light pollution in my neck of the woods.
The universe sure is an exciting place!

www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?release=2014-245Opportunity has passed Lunokhod 2's distance record! On the one hand, this is amazing, especially for a 10-year-old rover that was only supposed to last 90 days. On the other hand, I can't help but have a brief moment of sad because I love the Lunokhod rovers, too! And it's incredible that Soviet engineers in the 70's built something that wouldn't get its driving distance surpassed for another 40 years. Space rovers are like my children, I cannot pick a favorite.

Have you heard about CRISPR, a tool bacteria uses to fight predatory viruses that humans can now use to edit DNA from, as far as we know, anything with extreme accuracy in a process that takes a fraction of the time of old techniques? If not, here's GIZMODO's Everything you Need to Know About CRISPR. Also if you've heard about it but want to know more.

NASA has captured a supernova in the visible light range for the first time ever. When I was younger, I was obsessed with astronomy for the longest time, and my favorite phenomena included supernovas, gamma ray bursts, black holes... lots of really destructive stuff. Anyway, this made the inner astrophysicist in me giggle with glee. It's so cool! Even 3D model representations that we had before this were not as stunning. Bonus inference from the article: the star is 1.2 billion light years away, so technically it exploded 1.2 billion years ago.

Raising this thread from its grave to point out this video on recent developments in the study of aging, and slowing/stopping/possibly even reversing it.
It's a divisive and possibly worrying topic but the science going on here is fascinating as all heck regardless. I'd probably take immortality if I could get it.
