Ooh, neat! I love the soft gradients between the different colors, and the way you used the lightest color for the outlines near the light source.

this is just a sketch (haha there's so much stuff I want to refine mainly the colors of the figure but I told myself I was only going to spend an hour on it for speed practice) but the colors immediately made me think of this kind of atmosphere

Oooh, marvelous job! I love the angle of the rain, and how you captured that way clouds seem to seep down to the earth when it rains in the distance. There's a definite mood here that draws the viewer in.

I think maybe I'll do something like this later, but cleaner. Birch trees look so cool. (at least, they're supposed to be birches)

Nice work! All of those stripes must have taken a lot of time. And I agree, birch trees are awesome. <3

It's neat how everyone started with the same colour palette and then used it in totally different ways.

Yeah, I was hoping something like that would happen. I think that's one of the most fun things about group challenges like this.

Nut and Alyssa, I told you guys how much I liked your drawings on Skype, but I feel I should post here too, I hope that's okay. XD Nut, I love the rainy atmosphere you created in the picture. It looks great, the color palette was perfect for it. I also really like the composition, there's a lot of landscape, but my eyes are drawn to the character. I think the direction of the rain really helps for that. You're so good at telling stories through your pictures! Alyssa, I really like what you did! It's a really cute picture and I love the little details, like the animal silhouettes and the inscription on the tree. I know you mentioned doing a cleaner version, but I actually really like the sketchy look, I think you can pull it off so well. Some artists (like me to an extent, I think) instinctively try to make their art precise and refined, and then there's some others (like you, I think) that have a more sketchy and coarse style, but it shows freedom and passion and fluidity. I don't think either style is right or wrong, or better than the other. It's just about what works for each person. But I think you're wonderful at what you do, and I think you should embrace that style. ^_^ I wish sometimes that my pictures had that 'raw' expression that yours do, but it just doesn't come naturally to me. But that's okay, because I have my own style and I should be embracing mine. XD But yeah. I'm not sure this was the right place to say this, perhaps I should have posted in your art thread, but it's just something I really wanted to tell you. ^^

Oh, awesome! I've got a scene that I want to draw! =D And, I'm done. So, I picked this scene, mostly because it is what immediately jumped to mind. It is from A Little Princess. After Miss Minchin discovers the late night party up in Sara's attic room.
Sara tells Miss Minchin that she wonders what her father would say if he knew where she was that night. Then, alone, Sara sits and tries to bear all the pain of her miserable existence with only her doll Emily for company.

Ooh, nice! You've really captured the despondent mood of that scene well. The look on Sara's face and her pose are very expressive. Here's mine! It's just a sketch, but I don't have the energy for anything more polished... and, well, we're allowed to just do sketches if we want. <.< So, I just finished reading Arthur Waley's abridged translation of Journey to the West (his translation is called Monkey, but since I was already a little familiar with the original Chinese names, I continue to refer to the book and main characters as Journey to the West) for my Asian Civilization class, and I have to say it is now one of my favorite books. The mythos is wonderfully whimsical, the heroic-quest adventure thrilling, the humor hilarious, and the characters some of the most loveable in all of classic literature. So this is one of many of my favorite scenes, where Xuanzang and Sun Wukong have just started their journey together but they aren't getting along too well and Sun Wukong is being his old free-spirited, strong-willed self, so Guanyin gives Xuanzang a magic gold band that makes Sun Wukong have to obey the monk, and Xuanzang tricks Sun Wukong into putting it on. Sun Wukong freaks out and Guanyin descends from heaven to explain the situation to him, and Sun Wukong starts frantically complaining to her while Xuanzang is like "um."
While I love Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing, Guanyin is actually one of my other favorite characters. She seems to me to be sort of a mother figure to the travelers and the real brains behind the entire operation, constantly bailing them out of the trouble they find themselves in so often, always forgiving and understanding of their weaknesses and fallacies. When they're in their darkest hour, she always comes through for them, giving them the ability to press on with their difficult quest, and I think that's just such a lovely moral of the story. Plus she hangs out with dragon princesses, so.

If you know where this is from, I will love you forever! :3
From "How to Steal a Dragon's Sword" by Cressida Cowell. After fighting through each round successfully, Hiccup is about to win Flashburn's sword fighting competition. But, as he is about to face his last opponent, he sees he has to face... his dad.
