You're probably right about the Florida skunk ape. I hadn't seen the photos in a while so I did a quick search and in fact one of the first image results was a comparison between that creature and an orangutan (here is a link to that). The features are similar when you see them side by side. It being at night with the eyes and teeth glowing in the camera flash is what makes it spooky.
I have a Bigfoot documentary on VHS tape that I watched a lot as a kid and they mention Gigantopithecus in that (it's part of the "In Search of..." series narrated by Leonard Nimoy). I haven't watched the recent Jungle Book movie yet, though I have seen Louie in the promos. I never realized he is a Gigantopithecus. That's a neat detail!
