Hey guys, have you ever heard of this show "Once Upon a Time"? My cousin convinced me to watch it, the plot line is cliche every once in a while, but the show is pretty interesting for the amount of creativity put there. As I watched more and more, I couldn't help but notice the amount of interesting female characters and I began to wonder if the writers were doing it on purpose. In fact, most of the main characters are women. I looked into it - and yes, it's on purpose! I just found this interview where the actors mention how important it was for the writers to transform stereotyped princesses into realistic characters people can relate to. What you guys think about this? Is it a good strategy, do you believe it will make a big impact in midia? I personally find it very uplifting that show writers out there are conscious about this!

I am a fan of that show, and I'm really impressed with how they interpret their characters!

Okay I just read half that spoilered thing, daayyuuum what a big piece of text. I agree with the male dominance, I applied for gaming college and most applicants in the room were MALE. And the MALE interviewing me was very un-interested in me, saying yes through my answers and looking down on my "cartoon and anime" art, even stating that my cartoons looked like anime. Overal his attitude and the way he looked at me, it's no wonder I screwed up my interview and didn't get accepted.
In the end they even had the audacity to tell me to hurry and leave because they had lives to get back to when they would finish the interview!
If this is the attitude I'm facing I don't know if I even want to have anything to do with the gaming industry.

Well, I don't know about the art thing being sexist. It's just that game design (and for that matter, animation) studios are hyper-sensitive to anything that looks remotely anime-like. It depends a lot on the interviewer: the less familiar they are with anime, the more likely they are to see it in your work. I've shown the same image to two separate professors and have been told "You should try and do less of this anime thing," and "I love how your style isn't anime like so much other stuff." *shrug*

I don't know how relevant this is to sexism, but I agree that no one should be looked down for their art style, be it anime-like or not.

No, it's not really relevant at all. Anime and its relevancy in western game/animation/comic industries is something I have strong opinions about, but its a WHOLE other ball of wax.

Yeah, but why should atmosphere be so oppressively sexist, where my only option is to "shrug it off"? Or feel like I have to prove myself as a gamer to get them to shut up? And if I'm a bad player, or a new player, why should I have to subject myself to their slurs just to enjoy a game? This x1000. A guy can play a game and be terrible at it, and never have to worry that he's reflecting poorly on his entire gender. Whereas if I don't do well, I'm reinforcing the view that girl gamers are terrible. It's never "u suck" it's always "I knew it, girls suck". It makes me feel like I've let people down, and I hate it. It's great if it doesn't bother you, but that doesn't make it OK. I avoid playing online or multiplayer cause of stuff like this :/

I used to keep a photo of a rather obese, shirtless man at a computer for when people demanded "pics" of me. >.>
That, and I still avoid TeamSpeak and the like unless I'm playing with friends, because then it just turns into a "we wanna pic of you to see if your voice matches your face... and make sure it's a pic with 'cleavage.'"

Ugh. Yeah... Then comes the berating and colorful names when you refuse to send a photo. -.-

If it's a picture of cleavage they want, send them a picture of mica sheets or something.
on Omegle, when someone asks asl I don't respond simply because most of the people there want to see chicks for all the wrong reasons. And that's terrible.

Well, now they have things monitored, so I guess that's okay?
But really, I go there for the chance of seeing someone like Pewdiepie there xD
*drives this thread back on topic*
....I'm not sure if this has been covered already but what about the vloggers? I watch six or so, and only one is female. Is this coincidence or is it just more difficult for females to establish themselves there?....*shrugs because she honestly has no clue*

Okay, so DC has been doing some pretty... insane things lately. Last Thursday, two of the Batgirl editorial team quit their jobs because DC refused to let Batgirl get married to her partner Maggie Sawyer. And then today, DC launches an art contest where you draw four panels of Harley Quinn trying to kill herself in different ways! The fourth panel is naked Harley in a tub, ready to dump a bunch of electrical appliances into it. @__@ Let's also point out that this week is National Suicide Prevention Week. I mean, you can't even make this stuff up. Here's the actual contest page: www.dccomics.com/node/305151I mean, I just don't even. Like. What.

Okay, I DON'T approve. I'd be pretty mad if my fandoms did that (Barbie movies, Harry Potter etc.).

...
As much as I like DC, I've been having to distance myself from them lately. They've just been going downhill badly in recent years, tossing out a new token every now and then to try to appear vaguely socially conscious and then using those characters as excuses not to truly examine their material and their biases. I really started getting uncomfortable with the Amanda Waller redesign and there've been no signs of improvement. Lol, look, the token crazy bimbo killing herself, how hilarious. Wait, needs more sex, make her nekkid.
I hate it, but I can't really support them at this point. I decided a while ago that if I buy anything with a DC logo on it, I'm getting it second-hand so as not to give them any business. If they collapsed, it'd be a mercy.
