I'm not very well-versed on the national debt as a whole, but healthcare spending is a large part of the whole cost problem, which I do know enough about to talk about. Anyway, I ran across an article recently on the cost of healthcare that I found very interesting, and which I've also personally found to be very true. It's written by a doctor who travels to several different hospitals in several parts of the country to do research on what drives up healthcare cost, and found that the problem was not insurance, or government, but instead that doctors were prescribing medicine, asking for tests, and many other things which are largely unneeded, wasteful, and drive up the cost of healthcare. He then speculates on why and how to fix it. Before I post my own opinion, thoughts? It's a little long, but easy to understand and a little terrifying. www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/06/01/090601fa_fact_gawande?currentPage=all
