I doubt anyone became violent because they grew up watching Tom and Jerry (which arguably had some pretty violent things inside). xD Kids are smarter than we give them credit for. Heh. That reminds me of this. (Warning: Possible offensive language in the last panel? Depends on how sensitive you are to that sort of thing, I guess. xD; )

I've always been a firm believer in, that it's all a matter of how the kids are raised by their parents. Nursery rhymes, video games, books, movies and music does not -make- violent children. But children who lack comfort, love and proper raising from their parents, may use these things as their only source of learning. So yeah, kids are not as 'fragile' as some may think... unless they have a reason to be fragile due to lack of the aforementioned.
I do not believe the classics should be remade to 'shelter' the kids. But I am also not saying that they won't have any affect on -any- kids either. Like I said, some kids soak up the wrong things because it's the only thing they can soak up. Be it nursery rhyme or a video game.

It doesn't show up in the same way in all kids, but I very clearly remember sulking the whole way home in the car because my mom was tired and wouldn't stop to buy me fried chicken. We do expect immaturity from children, and we love them very much, but children are often quite cruel in their thoughts and expressions simply because they don't know any better. Agreed. I remember sulking and whining to emotionally manipulate my parents into buying a dress for one of my dolls. It was a really overpriced shiny piece of fabric, now that I see it from an adult perspective, but at the time I could imagine dressing up the doll and playing out so many scenes, and I was upset that my parents were denying me that. That memory resurfaced when I was going through some old stuff and found the shiny doll-dress. So they did buy it for me in the end. I got a little bit teary looking at it. ^^; But anyway, my point is that shielding kids from ugliness doesn't really help. You obviously don't want to dump a whole truck on them, but they're a lot hardier than we give them credit for. That's true. At age seven I understood that there was such a thing as death - that people and animals could leave this planet and never, ever come back. I cried a lot in the night thinking about it, but I was working through the concept too. I do not believe the classics should be remade to 'shelter' the kids. But I am also not saying that they won't have any affect on -any- kids either. I would agree with that. I do remember vaguely thinking, "That poor baby in Rock-a-Bye Baby!" The song that stuck with me the most though, from a young age, was "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean." It was profoundly sad in a way that I wasn't able to articulate until much later. (Edit: I just looked it up on Wikipedia, and it seems that the version they have up there has a happy ending. The one I was taught went simply: And it had a sad tune.) Man, I'm rambling. I meant to say that there are some not-so-innocent things in the rhymes and songs we teach to children, but I don't think we should go out of our way to shelter children from them. Ideally children should be given the chance to work through them with the help of adult mentors. Those not-so-innocent things are a part of the history and reality of this world, after all.

I grew up watching tv, movies, and video games. And I'm fine. I got smacked every now and then as a kid for doing things I was supposed to or talking back (talking back, still being a problem today XD). I didn't become deranged or anything. As for the nursery rhymes. I never really cared for them in the first place. When I realized how dark some can be, I found them funny.
