Surely there are fans of A Song of Ice and Fire on this forum.
Admittedly, I've barely cracked the first book, but I'm pretty addicted to the tv series. (which I can't in good conscience recommend to many people due to the content HBO puts on the screen itself)
Sooo... Anyone?

I watch the TV series with my mom, but to honest I didnt' knew it was a book series and I kinda don't pay much attention... XD Anyway, I really like the story! But the scene of that irritant and ambitious blond boy being burned alive with boiling gold was traumatizing! (Pfft, he deserved it. Pointing a sword to his own sister who's pregnant and trying to steal her dragon eggs is not cool! D: I wonder if he survived...nah.)

I've loved the TV series ever since I saw a few episodes at a society event at university, despite all the mature content. I do want to read the books but I'm a little put off by their status as bona fide doorstoppers. Considering that I read on the go (on buses, over lunch etc.) a book I can't carry about isn't comfortable for me. >> I will get to them one day though! They seem too interesting to not read.

I'm in the middle of the 3rd book, and I'm SOOO glad I'm ahead of all the people watching the series on TV. ... Especially my friends, who SUCK at not posting spoilers on FB. :/
But at the same time, I find it hard to talk with people who only watch the series, because I sort of forget what happened in the 2nd book (which they saw) and what happened in the 3rd book (which they haven't seen). And I can't talk with people who've read the books because most of them have finished the books, and I'm still 1 1/2 behind. XD So I don't know how much I can even contribute to this thread, hahahaa.
As for the tv series, I kind of try to avoid it, because it's waaaaaaay different than the way I picture most of the characters (except Ned, who was surprisingly spot-on). Like, I always pictured the Iron Men as sort of olive-skinned, since Theon was described as a "dark, handsome youth." But Theon in the show looks like a total putz. Bleh. XDD
As for the books, Ohmigosh Tyrion, pleaaaaase stop having so much sex! XD Ew.

I just finished the fourth book over the weekend and I've watched both seasons too. Since the fifth book isn't scheduled to come out in paperback until March, I suppose I've got a bit of a break in the series. It's weird; despite reading and watching this series so much, a lot of it still annoys me and I find sort of frustrating, yet I can't stop. XD It's hooked me, and I'm very much curious to know how it will all end, because it's always seemed clear (and impressive) to me that his world is building towards something massively important. (Or at least, I hope it is, because otherwise what's the point? XD) But a lot of the details and specifics of his writing and plot I find needlessly difficult or frustrating. Ending nearly every chapter in a cliffhanger keeps me reading but at the same time I often find his cliffhangers unclear or confusing, and it can take him 150 pages to get back to that character, by which point I've forgotten what's happened to them in their last POV section. And his penchant for torturing every enjoyable character is awfully hard to accept after a point. XD; The final chapter of a certain favorite character of mine in A Feast For Crows ends with them sinking lower than ever before through no fault of their own, and it's just exhausting. XD EDIT: Also I changed the title of the thread because the unnecessary article was bothering me. >_>

I hear you, Dan. The brutality against characters was really compelling at first, especially in the first book, but after a while you start to get a little weary that no one can catch a break. XDD When the Bast. of Bolton rapes that old widow lady and then locks her in a tower where she starves to death, her fingers chewed off. That was just... totally unnecessary.

To be honest, I'm in a love/hate relationship with he brutality towards characters. XD I am fascinated about Ser Gregor Clegane and Bolton's Bast.. - they're violent beyond limit, that's their gift and flaw, that's what brings them down and up. But oh my, so much blood..too much, in fact! X___x I also love how the author is professional towards his characters - he does not pick favorites nor cliche paths to their stories, if someone must die he will not hesitate to eliminate that character. Even if I like that character very much. XD

I haven't read or watched it yet. However, yesterday I did pick up the first season box set at the library.

Even if I like that character very much. XD Yeah, I feel that lends a lot more realism to the books than when some authors just flippantly kill off one or two characters in an attempt to make them seem real *coughhungergamescough*. Sometimes authors kind of spend too much time going "Woahhhhh check it out! I bet you never saw that coming! I'm so clever!!" and it just kind of feels forced. - Arya losing Needle. I dunno, but that event I really like, because when that random guard took her sword, no matter how much she treasured it or how special its meaning/backstory, you know that that sword's not coming back. It's a huge kingdom, the odds of her coming across that same guard with the same sword are beyond slim. It's something we're so used to in movies and stories that it's almost like a given that any special treasured object that someone loses, there will be miraculous acts of God just to reunite that person and their item. I like that that's not the case.

Oh yeah, that part was really good! Arya is very well developed in my opinion, she has that wild spirit but since she lived protected by her high born status her entire life things get really ugly for her! In her head she's brave and strong, but when it comes to facing reality she finds out it's not THAT easy. Oh boy, the way Arya realized she was just a little girl was so good (and sad) while facing those Lannisters, they broke her heart right there. X] I can relate the Needle situation to Nymeria - when Arya meets a wolf in the woods (that is very likely to be Nym, taking it's size in consideration) it's clear that Nymeria is now a wild wolf with a pack to look after, there's no going back. They'll always have a special bond, but not a friendship kind of bond...more like respect for one another. And yeah, Hunger Games was very disappointing on that part. Katniss killed just... one person directly. What the heck. >.<;

Dju.... was that post after book 2? :/ Because I haven't finished 3, and those events don't sound familiar. Daggone it.

I've read this to about halfway through Book 3, but I put that down several months ago and I cannot seem to compel myself to pick it up again. I read it out of a kind of morbid fascination and the fact that the characters were so well defined, but I can't really... actually enjoy the books. They're depressing as heck. xD;;; Nothing good ever happens to anyone! I mean, I know, I get that it's war and it's supposed to be realistic, but does everything have to be portrayed in such a predominantly negative light? Can't there be an occasional small moment of positive interaction just for the sake of balance? I also find the amount of swearing and mature content completely unnecessary and off-putting. xD; But the story is told well and the characters are very well developed, I can't argue that. I'm just not much a fan of books written from a cynical perspective, in general; I think Ender's Game is the only dystopian story I've actually really enjoyed. As for the books, Ohmigosh Tyrion, pleaaaaase stop having so much sex! XD Ew. Yeah, this. xD Do those scenes need to go into that much detail? xD;; I just finished the fourth book over the weekend and I've watched both seasons too. Since the fifth book isn't scheduled to come out in paperback until March, I suppose I've got a bit of a break in the series. It's weird; despite reading and watching this series so much, a lot of it still annoys me and I find sort of frustrating, yet I can't stop. XD; The final chapter of a certain favorite character of mine in A Feast For Crows ends with them sinking lower than ever before through no fault of their own, and it's just exhausting. XD Yeah, the series has a compelling quality that kept me reading as well despite the fact that I was really put off by his cynical attitude. xD; Whenever I got to a cliffhanger for a favorite character, I'd flip ahead to see when that character next came back, and groan at how many chapters I had to go through before I got to them again... and then keep reading anyway. xD; Ned was my absolute favorite character in the first book and one of my favorites in the series. The others that I like are Catelyn, Sansa, Brienne, Bran, Jon Snow, and Daenerys. I pretty much read the books looking forward to the chapters with the characters I like. TwoDaysLater!Edit: Because apparently of all the names in the series, I have a hard time spelling Jon. (Although Dan had to teach me how to spell Daenerys earlier. xD; )
