This post is full of behind-the-scenes type of stuff and things that happened during MoDEoN. So basically it's full of the stuff that I wanted to reveal but, for one reason or another, didn't until just now.
Behind-the-ScenesHow the Dark Elves Escaped
Bass was sent to let the Elves out. He teleported into the forest, headed directly toward the sphere-cage, blasted a hole into it with his plasma cannon, and teleported away.
The Dark Elves' Chant
In line with the ‘Ominous [insert language here] Chanting’ trope, the infected Cyber Elves did a chant as part of their ritual to build and focus their power to summon Sigma. (I didn’t write out a chant for the other Mavericks, partly because they other Mavericks required less power, and it was simply easier for the Elves the second time around. Also, it would’ve taken more time.
)
I actually used the chant as a timer of sorts, with Sigma appearing after the second time it was finished in the RP. (Though while not written, it went through many iterations before anyone heard it in-RP.)
The chant is in Japanese, if a bit mangled to fit a meter (and from my not being so confidant in Japanese, especially at the time). There’s also a bit of silliness to it, as you’ll see either if you understand Japanese, or when you see the (intended) translation.

Notes:
First off, I would like to give the disclaimer that I don’t seem to have written down what I originally intended as the meaning, so I’m basically doing a combination of re-translating and going from memory.
Also, a number of my errors, while they would technically translate differently than I intended, still look like they’d be fitting.
*This was supposed to be ‘come, Great Master,’ but I think it ended up closer to ‘The great master comes.’
**I used the word for ‘fills’ instead of ‘rises.’ I’m not sure if that’s actually what I meant, but I think ‘fills’ technically works better.
***This refers to their little ‘song-and-dance’ of a ritual they’re doing. (And I accidentally wrote ‘dance’ as a noun...)
****I so didn’t understand how ‘jibun’ was used. This would better translate as ‘the master himself calls’.
Stories1. Zero Returns to Base
((Note: This occurs after
Zero teleports away with Bass and an injured Axl.))
*Back at the Hunter Base, those in the control room and teleportation room are alerted of an incoming teleportation. Those in the latter room watch anxiously, and to their surprize, in comes Zero in his Black Armor, bringing with him an oddly-colored Axl, and a winged, black Robot whom the Hunters find unfamiliar. They materialize in the air and fall to the floor, having the wind knocked out of them almost as soon as it enters them.*
*stirs briefly*
*then loses consciousness*
*never regains consciousness in the first place*
Staff: ! Zero! *runs to the teleport pad* Are you okay? What happened? Who is this?
*gives a soft moan*
...repairs...
now.Staff: Oh! Right! *gets on radio* Repair team to the teleport room! Stat!
-----
...
*is the first to wake up, his recovery bed opening for him*
Nurse: How are you feeling, sir?
... Well, you guys repaired me.
Nurse: *nervous laughter* *clears throat* Commander Signas wanted to see you as soon as you were awake. I'll let him know you're ready.
*
*walks into the maintenance room* Zero. Good to see you. How are you feeling?
... Intact.
... The others said you attacked them, aggressively.
... Sigma found a way into my head.
Sigma?! Are you
sure you're alright?
The last thing I remember is the other Hunters defeating him. I'm not sure how he got there, but... he should be gone now.
... How are the others doing?
My memory's kind of fuzzy, but they seemed to be doing fine.
Can you think of a reason why we haven't heard from them?
... I don't know. There were other Mavericks there, so they might still be busy, but I don't know why they wouldn't check in. My guess is that the signal might be too weak.
...
Who's the small Reploid you brought with you?
... I don't think I caught his name, but Sigma was using him against his will.
"Once Sigma was defeated, it seemed like I should take him with me." Hmm...
What about Axl? Why does he look... green?
...
"... Someone forced him to take Sigma's form, and I think Sigma actually took over. So when the others were fighting Sigma..." ...they were actually fighting Axl.
*nods*
... That would certainly explain the damage... But why didn't his armor change back to normal?
Can't say I know, sir. I was just wondering that myself.
... I see. Is there anything else I should know?
... The other Mavericks I recognized were Vile, Gate, and Lumine.
How is that possible?!
Apparently they found a way to come back, too. I don't think we need to worry about them coming
here though. Also, there was... a light.
A light?
When the others were fighting... Whatever it was made it so Axl could change back, and it brought me back to normal, too. If it could do that, I think it can also give the other Hunters more of a fighting chance.
... I guess we'll just have to hope for the best. In the meantime, I want all of you thoroughly examined. If there's any residual energy from that light, I want to know as much about it as I can. I also want to know if Axl suffers any side-effects. And until we're
sure that you're back to normal, I'm putting you both on suspension.
But-
If you two... three, are
any risk at all, I don't want to take any chances. You're on suspension until you're cleared.
... Understood.
I also want to talk to Axl and the other Reploid the first chance I get. Until we get a good examination, you're confined to the maintenance room.
... Understood.
2. In the Maintenance Room
*in the maintenance room, sitting through scan after scan, test after test, doing his best to contain his impatience and boredom*
Nurse: Well, so far there are no major variances from your standard readings. I'd have to run the results by Signas, but in my opinion, you're good to go.
.oO (Finally.) Thank you.
Nurse: I'd like to check a
few more things, but they shouldn't take very long. Let's get you back to your normal armor first.
*follows the nurse to a station, which he uses only to get an error*
... I can't.
Nurse: *gives a confused look, checks the error* Let me try doing it for you. *enters some commands, gets the same error* Strange... *looks up at Zero* We'll need to do some tests to look into this.
*mental sigh* Fine. *lays back down in his recovery bed, where the nurse begins working on some settings* How are the other two doing?
Nurse: Well...
”The one with the wings has a nonstandard design that's actually not compatible with the recovery beds. We might need to do some repairs manually, if we can figure out what parts we need. He doesn't look like he's damaged too badly, though. And his readings seem pretty normal, so far as we can tell.” ... And Axl?
Nurse: ...
”Well, you saw how badly he was damaged. We did manage to stabilize him fairly easily, and he's on the recovery. It looks like it will take awhile, though, and we'll need to wait until he's in better shape before we can really do some tests on him.” ...
*mental sigh*
Nurse: Alright, are you ready?
Ready.
Nurse: *taps an icon on the console*
*the glass cover of the bed closes over him*
*his eyes grow heavy*
*and he drifts into sleep mode*
-----
Nurse 1: ... I can't find any reason why Zero
shouldn't be able to change armor. We might need to wait for the others to get back; Alia might be able to find something I missed.
Hmm...
So can I go now?
You're still on suspension, but you're released from the Maintenance Room.
... Thank you. But why am I still on suspension?
A precaution. I want to make
sure you're in the clear before sending you out.
.oO (*sigh...*) Understood.
*to the nurse* How are the other patients.
Nurse 1: We've determined some of the parts we need for the one with wings and we're about to print them out. We're also starting getting some preliminary readings from Axl.
*stirs*
Nurse 1: Somehow, his base DNA has been altered. It's... closer to Sigma's, but he's not giving off any Maverick readings.
*whimper*
?
Nurse 1: At any rate, he's on the road to recovery, and I think he's going to be fine.
*suddenly sits upright* AA-
*hits head on the cover of the bed*
*makes a dash for Axl's recovery bed, as well as a few nurses*
Nurse 2: *to Axl* Please calm down! You were badly damaged and you'll hurt yourself more...
Axl, take it easy. You're back in the maintenance room of the Hunter Base. You'll be fine.
*blinks* ...
*lays down, sighing, holding a hand to his face* Sorry... Bad dream...
... ?
*holds arm in front of him...*
*...as he notices his coloration* ...that's not over...
Nurse 1: You're going to be okay. You're not giving off any Maverick readings.
Then... what's with my head?!
Your head?
Nurse 3: ? *adjusts some settings on the bed's console* ... ! I'm reading increased higher processor activity!
*curling up, clutching head* Make it stop...!
*sees Axl and begins to gape somewhat, blinking*
Easy, kid. You know we're all here to help you.
Make it
stop!Nurse 3: *pauses with worry* ... Initiating dreamless sleep.
*the bed starts to take over*
*his body begins to relax*
*and he falls asleep*
...
...
...
*to nurse 1* I'd like you to get those tests done and get the results to me as soon as possible. Keep him contained to the bed until I say otherwise. Once the results are in
and he's in good enough condition to talk, let me know.
Nurse 1: ... Yes sir.
...
3. Concerning Axl
((This scene takes place some time after the previous one, and relates to things briefly mentioned
here.))
*sitting in the corner of the room he shares, writing on a tablet-like device*
*walks in the room, notices Axl, and walks up to him* What are you writing?
*looks up at Zero*
Just... something I thought about.
... I know Signas said you could take your time sending in everything you remember, but you've been doing a
lot of reading and writing lately.
Well there's only so much we can do when we're on suspension.
... What I mean is you haven't been yourself lately.
... I have "increased higher-processor activity," remember?
And... what does that mean?
Well... it seems like I can think about more stuff. At once, even.
It's...
A lot like how Sigma thought, and it almost drove me crazy.
I've been getting used to it. It's still weird. But...
I can't
help but think. It's like I can't turn my brain off! And some of the things I think about... scare me. Earlier, at the Taco... I ran into a Human that... didn't seem so bright and... *shaking* I...
I wanted him hurt. What if I
am slowly going Maverick?
I...
I don't... ... *bends down closer to Axl's level* Kid... *softer* Axl. I'm going to let you in on a secret.
For as long as I can remember, generally when working with a more... non-compliant Human, I
have had moments where I'd think maybe they
should get hurt, especially when it seems like they almost
want to. Sometimes I think it might knock some sense into them. Of course, I never follow through on it. I usually just shake it off and keep going.
.oO (
Yeah, but that's you. You're not exactly the best example in this case.) What about X?
He'd never admit it, but trust me, he has his moments, too.
.oO (
Did Zero just-? Does X really-?)
My
point is that the thoughts happen, but you don't need to follow through on them. You decided not to do it, right?
Of course!
Well as long as you do, I think you'll be fine. Okay?
.oO (
I guess that makes sense... Lumine said he chose to be Maverick...) ...'Kay.
Okay. *gives Axl a quick pat on the shoulder* You'll be fine.
*gets up and heads off*
*watches as Zero walks away, gaping slightly* ...
*turns back to the tablet*
*What Axl has written can be summed up as 'Why aren't we allowed to hurt Humans? What if it's because they have souls and we don't?'* ... *closes the file and starts a new one*
.oO ("What makes a Maverick?")
4. After the Evacuation
((These next three occur between
the Hunters leaving Swash's base after teleporting out all the tyros and
X heading off to moderate between the Rinamians and Sermekian Robot groups.))
*teleport in as the other hunters are leaving the teleport room*
Welcome back, you two. Alia, did you have
any idea how many fugitives you would be sending us?
No. Not until we started noticing how long it took to evacuate them all.
Hm. We can discuss it later. Right now, I'd like you both to stop for maintenance. Especially you, Alia; we need your help with something.
What is it?
-----
*at the console of a recovery bed, looking over readings as various others are nearby* This is insane!
You're telling
me? Sorry, it's just...
Whatever Gate did somehow changed your base DNA. That shouldn't be possible; any changes should just be processed by your copy chip with your DNA backed up, and then you should change back to normal.
*taps a few more buttons* ... I'm not finding any traces of what he did, either. Either he covered his tracks or the transformation obscured them.
*sets the cover from the bed to retract* I'm sorry, Axl, but I don't think I can help you, either.
*gets up from the bed* It's okay.
No it's not! Zero might not be emitting it, but his data still shows it's picked up some of the virus, if dormant. And
your modifications include more of
Sigma's data, and increased higher-processor function. You
can't tell me that hasn't affected you!
...
Axl's... been doing more reading lately.
That sounds like a
good change, if anything.
... He's been studying evolution, because of what Lumine said back on the moon.
*sigh* Yeah, I felt like I needed to know.
And after careful consideration, I've come to the conclusion-
...
...that Lumine was wrong.
...
It's almost like he heard about what evolution
was, but not about how it
works or what it's
for. Yeah sure, a new species might inherit something eventually, but
nowhere does anything say they
have to eliminate older ones. Heck, if anything they might end up in symbiosis - something he probably never heard about. And what does it say about 'survival of the fittest' if we keep
beating these new Mavericks?
*wave of relief*
We've gotten off track. The point is, we don't have a way to
fix you.
...
Actually, I remember things from when... Sigma was in my head. And if he was right, we might.
...
And I think I know how we can test it, too.
5. Testing the Cure (posted with permission from
Gelquie)
((Note: Starla was infected by the Maveric Virus and
brought to a holding area in the Hunter Base,
had a blood test, and was later released. However, this had to happen first.))
*The guards and other Reploids tried to take care of Starla, occasionally adjusting their care based on human needs that she tells them about. When asked how long until they can help her and let her out, they generally tell her 'We'll let you know.' Once one of them even adds 'when we find out.' This continues for some time - how much time is hard to tell within the cell - but finally one of the guards comes to her with different information.*Guard: We might have something.
Even though Starla was taken care of well enough (once she gave them a better idea of what she needed), it did little to help her behavior. In fact, it seemed that her temper was only getting worse over time, and it always flared when she was denied an answer to how long it would take.
Starla was sitting on the ground away from the door, staring at something in her hand when she heard the guard. She looked over her shoulder and stared at the guard in question, and uncertain look on her face. She let out an exasperated grunt as she got up.Starla: Finally. I've had
enough of this. What have you found?
*The guard is visibly nervous about talking to her.*Guard: Well... We think the cure isn't so much a... chemical or plant so much as an energy. And... we think we know someone with the energy.
Starla raises an eyebrow at this and pauses before speaking.Starla: An energy? ...And is this person in any way trustworthy?
Guard: *caught off-guard by the question* What? Of course! He's one of our veteran members!
Starla: So you feel you can trust him. ...The question is, can
I?
Guard: ... *firmly, with certainty* Yes.
Starla: *Folds her arms.* We'll see about that.
(After all, I've been stuck here for who knows how long and I still have too many things I need to do...)Guard: ... *sighs* *heads off*
*It's not much longer before Starla hears voices approaching her cell.*I don't know...Either way, are you really going to leave her hanging?... *comes into Starla's sight, seeming uncertain, maybe somewhat frightened* ... He-Hello...
Starla: *Turns as the being approaches her. She eyes him with uncertainty.* You're the one they were talking about? ...What exactly are you going to do?
I'm... not sure.
*turns to the Reploid that came in with him*
... Either he didn't know, or he didn't think it was important. ... Though if
*shudder* the
memories are anything to go by
it might be something like... kind of reaching inside yourself and pulling that inside-thing
out? ...
... He did it so naturally that he didn't even think about it. Of course, this is assuming it would even work for the different powers...
Starla's eyes widened in horror.Starla: Taking something
out of me?! *She backs up away from the robots.* How do I know that's not going to
kill me?!
! What?! NO!
Out of
him! I was talking to
him!
*a little... embarrassed?* You see... I've...
never done this before...
Starla exhales audibly, but she doesn't lower her guard much.Starla: ...That doesn't make me feel much better.
I know... Me neither...
But it's the best shot we've got. *gestures to X* He can do it, it just might take awhile for him to figure it out.
...
Starla groans at this and shakes her head. She's silent for a moment before looking up again.Starla: Can you at least tell me
what it is you're going to do to me?
...
It's... kinda like a vaccine? ... Kinda like light chasing out darkness?
Starla: A vaccine? From within him?
...Light... *She turns away and says nothing.*
...
...
We're going to give it a shot. *stands by the controls and lets down the outer force field so X can get through*
... *takes a breath* *walks through, with Axl putting up the field behind him, lowering the one in front of him, then raising that one once he's through* ...
*still a little nervous about this* ...
Starla watches the forcefields go up and down out of the corner of her eye, but otherwise doesn't turn her head. Turned away from Axl and X, she looks down at her hands in front of her and summons an aura of darkness around her right hand and an aura of light around her left hand. However, her light spell is significantly weaker than her dark spell, and the light is flickering.Starla: *Whispering.*
...Drives out the darkness... And yet here we are.She sighs and dismisses the spells in her hands before turning to X.Starla: Why should I trust you on this?
I...
I don't know if there's anything I can say that would make you trust me. Even so, I don't want to leave you like this. I want to help.
Starla: ...If by "leaving me like this", you mean leaving me stuck in this cage and facility, then I absolutely agree with you. ...But we both know that's not what you really mean.
*genuinely confused expression* What do you mean?
*facepalming out of sight*
Starla: The others are leaving me trapped here for who knows how long, each saying they won't let me out until they "cure" me. And I'm not even clear with what's supposed to be "wrong" with me in the first place. I never wanted to be part of this experiment. I just want to get out of here.
*didn't expect that - eyes pop open* 'Experiment'?!
?! They didn't tell you?
Starla: Oh, they told me some things. That there's something in my brain and they're trying to cure me. But it's nothing as terrible as they're making it out to be. For the most part, I'm
fine. But they insist on keeping me here anyway, and I have more important things to do than run through their tests.
... No, it's real. Trust me.
*steps out to where he's visible again* What it does varies, but it usually makes someone more... aggressive... among other things... Even if it doesn't affect
you that badly, it can still spread, and others might be hurt
worse. Please just... let him do this.
*looking at Axl* ...
...
What have you got to lose, anyway? Would you rather just stay in here?
... If you know anything about how to do things like this, I'd appreciate if you could help, too.
Starla is silent for a long moment, contemplating what was said.Starla: ...No, I wouldn't rather stay here. But I'm still not sure what exactly it
is you're talking about. A disease? A spell? Something else entirely? ...Whatever it is, there's nothing I can do. And frankly, I doubt if what you have in mind will work at all.
We call it a virus, but it's not a normal virus...
We're not sure how to classify it, either. But X *firmly*
should be able to neutralize it. I got the information...
... from someone smarter than me.
Starla raises an eyebrow.Starla: A virus? I still don't see how it's affecting me, aside from the occasional headache.
(And the strange things with my magic... Of course, it doesn't help that I don't know when I got this supposed virus... If it makes people more aggressive, wouldn't I have noticed earlier that something was wrong?) ...Are there any other effects in what you're giving me?
Which is why it's so different... Why we're not sure... It can affect Humans, too.
... No other effects that I heard of.
Starla: ...That seems odd... I guess it can't hurt.... But then again, all I have is your word for it.
*getting tired of this* ... If it doesn't work. Feel free to give me a good kick.
*mental double-take* ?!
Starla looks at the ground, silent for a long time.Starla: (I don't have much of a choice, do I? It's either that and then I continue or rot here some more... Gnh...)Starla puts a hand to her head in pain, but after a few seconds, she takes off her hand. She looks back up to Axl and X.Starla: Alright. I'll let you do it. *Her eyes visibly darken as she stares at the two of them with narrowed eyes.* But if it not only doesn't work but makes me worse off than before, I'll do
much worse to you than give you a good kick.
*without hesitation* Got it. Go ahead and proceed.
... ... ...
*exhales*
*holds his hands out in front of him - palms toward each-other - and stares at them, trying to focus*
Starla stands there, mostly watching what's happening. As she waits, she looks at X, wondering just exactly what he's going to do. She hopes she didn't make a mistake. *shakes hands a little*
Come on... ...
Do you have any tips on drawing out his energy?
Starla: Other than meditation or just focusing on the spell? ...I have no idea what his spellcasting is like. You're asking the wrong person. *She looks uncomfortable, eyeing X's hands warily.*
*pauses at the word 'meditation'*
*takes a deep breath* *he gives a bit of a 'furrowed brow' expression, but overall is much more relaxed* *after a couple minutes of effort, some energy could be felt - not seen - between his hands...*
*after some more time, a faint,
pale blue glow starts to manifest*
In watching X relax and concentrate on his spell, Starla seems to relax a little bit as well, if only slightly. She taps her foot slightly before noticing the pale blue glow in X's hands. Instinctively, Starla takes a step back. *somewhat startled when he hears Starla step back, the already-faint glow disappearing*
*was getting bored from waiting before he noticed Starla as well* Is something wrong?
Starla: ...N-no.
(You know, aside from everything else that's wrong... At least nothing bad has happened yet. ...Come on, Starla. Get through this and we can get out of here. There's no other way...) ...
*takes a breath, ending with a sigh* *focusses again, the
pale light appearing faster, becoming readily visible before too long*
...
Starla does her best to stay still as she watches X. However, there is a small frown on her face as she lightly taps her foot again, waiting for whatever may happen next. ...
*tries opening his eyes to get a look at how he's doing*
*a wave of nervousness is seen and the light flickers before he lets it disappear* ...
...
*sighs*
.oO (Okay... let's do this...)
*holds out a hand for Starla to take*
Starla watches warily as she watches the light flicker away.Starla: (Did it not work?)She looks down at X's extended hand, unsure of what's going on now.Starla: (A handshake...) *She hesitates before extending her hand and grasping X's hand with it.*
*holds onto her hand, and takes hold of her shoulder with his other hand*
*closes his eyes and concentrates, trying not just to focus the energy, but to direct it into her*
*At first, the energy feels somewhat... invasive as it first makes its way in. However, shortly after, it feels rather soothing. Calming. Cleansing...*Starla stands there uncomfortably as he grasps her shoulder as well. She feels uncertain at first. Then she starts slightly fidgeting as the magic starts to take its work.Starla: (What? What's going on? Is this whole thing supposed to be this uncomforta--) *She pauses.*
Huh... *She closes her eyes and starts to visibly relax.*
*as he continues to focus some of the energy into her, he finds his hand drifting toward her closer to her solar plexus... whether this is a conscious decision is uncertain*
...
Starla mostly just stands there, now focusing on the energy and waiting to see what will happen. *continues for awhile longer, just to make sure the bad energy is cleared out*
*eventually stops, pulling back* ...
... How do you feel?
Starla lets go of X's hand and stands there for a moment before slowly opening her eyes. She blinks and looks around her and the cell before looking down at herself. She then reaches her hand up to scratch behind her head, her face showing her confusion.Starla: I-I'm not sure...
It's gone? ...I know something's changed. Just... Give me a moment. I need to collect myself.
... *waits patiently, looking concerned*
*writing something on a device that looks like a tablet*
Starla paces in thought for some time, trying to make sense of things.Starla: (I'm still trapped in this cage, but... Why don't I feel as angry as I was before? The headache doesn't feel as bad now. Think, think back...)She stands there for a moment, reflecting. At one point, her eyes go wide, and she shakes her head a few seconds later. She is silent for a long time before she finally sighs and looks back to X and Axl.Starla: Whatever kind of magic that was... I think it worked, though I can't really explain it yet. ...But I still don't understand how it happened in the first place.
*breathes a sigh of relief*
That's good. We'll have someone come by in a few minutes and check just to be sure. Okay?
Starla: ...Alright. But... I still don't want to be in here much longer.
I'll try to make sure you're let out soon.
*on his radio* Yeah, get someone down here fast, please. Make sure they bring a scanner.
Starla: *Sighs.*
(Just a little longer, Starla.) ...Thank you.
*sure enough, some personnel come by, come into Starla's cell - with X still waiting inside - and do a few scans*
Reploid1: *looking like she can't believe what she's seeing* Nothing... Nothing... ... Nothing.
Reploid2: I'm not finding anything either!
So, would you say she's good to go?
*the two Reploinds look at each-other, dumbfounded, before they finally nod*
Reploid1: Just let me get a release form ready...
Starla couldn't help but let out a relieved smile and a sigh of relief.Starla: At last... *She looks up, eager to go when she sees everyone in the room at the same time. She then pauses for a moment before letting out another sigh.* Before I go... I'm sorry for my behavior to you all.
No, it's okay; you weren't yourself.
...
...
Starla: ... *She mutters to herself.*
Wasn't I...? ...*She stays quiet, waiting for whatever may happen next.*
*Some time passes, as the Reploids go through a number of bureaucratic processes. By the end of the day, however, one of the Reploids drops both force fields around Starla's cell.*Reploid3: You're free to go, miss.
*There are a couple moments of silence.*
Do you want help getting back?
Starla is absolutely ecstatic to hear what the Reploid says, and she dashes out of the cell. She doesn't immediately go out of the room though. Instead she stands there, just basking in her enjoyment of being allowed to leave.
After about half a minute, Starla turns to Axl.Starla: I could use some help. Overall, I don't even know where I am.
Alright. If you just come with me to the teleport room, we can send you back from there.
...
Starla: *Nods.* Alright. Thank you. *She goes to follow Axl to the teleport room.*
Alright, this way.
*follows after*
*Axl leads Starla down a few hallways that only seem vaguely familiar. Sure enough, within a few minutes, they make their way to the teleporter room.* *is currently manning the controls (so to speak)*
*notices Axl walking in with Starla*
The Taco?
Yep.
*as he walks in...*
*look at each-other* ...
*before averting their gaze* ...
...
Alright... Destination set for the Taco. Whenever you're ready, miss. Congratulations on getting better.
Starla followed Axl and X quietly, mainly noting the hallways she was traveling in and thinking about all that's happened, from the time she was in the forest till now. Mostly, she was focusing on her own actions.
Alia's voice broke her out of her trance, and she was able to watch the scene with Alia and X. Starla resisted a chuckle, but couldn't hide a short smile. Then she turns to Alia again.Starla: I... Thank you. And thank you for finding me when you did. If you hadn't... *She shakes her head.* I'm ready.
She steps towards the teleporter. *works the controls* Alright...
.oO (Stop blushing! Stop blushing!)
*waits for Starla to step onto the teleporter* Goodbye, miss. I hope things go well for you.
*tries to give Starla a reassuring smile*
*also*
Initiating teleport in three... two... one... *hits a button*
Starla turns to see the others as she stands on the teleporter. She waves to them as they say goodbye. She tries to give off a smile, but it is a sad smile weighted by anxiety.
And then she let herself be teleported away.6. More Curing
I still can't believe it...
*looks at Axl* How did... Sigma... know that?!
*shrug* All I remember is what he did and what he thought about when he was... you know... Other than that, I don't have any access to his memories. He didn't spend a lot of time thinking about
how he learned things.
...
I still can't believe I
cured someone.
Yeah... Can you do it again?
... Could you use that power on me?
... Are you sure?
That it's what I need to change back? No, but I'm out of other options. And if Alia was right, it can't hurt...
But what if you lose your higher processing?
...
*sigh* X, Signas isn't even sure if I'm safe, other Hunters are afraid of me, I'm stuck thinking in a way that's alien to me, I
wish I could stop thinking about some things, I can't even take out my frustrations on the field, and to add insult to injury I
look like the guy who possessed me.
I'd be
useful to you guys again. And besides that.. I was
happier. This just isn't
me. At this point, I'd try
anything. ... If you're sure.
*takes a breath* *calls up his energy more easily and tries to channel it into Axl*
*relaxing into it as the energy soothes him* ...
.oO (This feels...)
...
*after some time, stops the energy and backs up*
It didn't work. I'm sorry, Axl.
*looking at self* It's okay. I feel... better.
So it must have done
something. I just wish I could do more.
Woah woah woah! You've got a
cure for the Maverick Virus! Think about what kind of things you can do with
that! Seriously! I know what you meant, but really, anything helps. ... Thank you.
...
... Though if you
do want to do more...
*
Let me see if I've got this straight: you've found out that you have a power to cure the Maverick Virus, you've already used it once or twice, and now you want to try it on me?
*nod*
... Do it.
...
... *walks up closer to Zero*
*focuses energy - starts using it on Zero*
*quietly lets X use the energy*
*tries to bear through it as it gets more uncomfortable*
*clenching teeth* ...
Mm. M- graA
AUUUGH!! *pulls back!*
*falls back, clutching self, breathing sharply...*
*...as his color begins to shift*
Zero!
Are you okay?!
*pant...*
*looks at self* ...
Yeah, I'll be fine. *starts to get up*
A-are you sure? I don't want to have damaged you.
And it might be good to get some new readings, just in case.
*on feet, takes step*
*wobbles slightly* ... Okay, I'll let them get their readings.
*head off toward maintenance room*
7. Finding Solutions - WARNING! Mostly techno-babble! Feel free to skip.
*staring at a monitor with data and simulations on it*
.oO (Okay Alia,
think. When any foreign DNA enters - whether Reploid or virus - it's sent to the copy chip for processing. If it's full, or almost-full Reploid DNA and sent through the proper channels, it's applied to the host Reploid, which takes on the correlating form - or at least abilities, in Axl's case. If it's partial or broken DNA, like with a virus, it's rejected. It's also rejected if it's not applied through the copy channels. Neither is it accepted if they're sleepi-)
.oO (Oh my... Axl had to be
awake, didn't he?)
.oO (I need to focus.)
.oO (The copy chip keeps a backup of the host's base DNA at all times, which is guarded by several layers of security. If foreign DNA is rejected, the base DNA is applied just to be safe. Even if accepted, it places limits on the transformation, and will revert eventually automatically, if not manually. Even when
not transformed, it will periodically compare the checksum of the host's DNA with that of the base DNA. The mind is guarded
especially carefully;
nothing is let through there. Not to mention all failsafes have several layers of error handling...)
.oO (There has to be a flaw in the setup
somewhere that Gate was able to use. But where? I guess if the checksum happens to match, it might slip though... But the chances of that are so infinitesimally small that it's virtually impossible. Granted... This
is Gate we're talking about; he might have manipulated the data somehow. Still, it doesn't explain how the transformation was applied for so long, or how some of it was leftover. Or even how Sigma's mind was able to inhabit his body. I guess it's
possible he did some physical hacking...)
*shudder*
.oO (I hope not... It would certainly complicate things. Especially since it's designed to be highly tamper-resistant.)
.oO (Layer already ran simulations - including physical intrusion - based on the data of New Generation Reploids. Even just
infecting them should be impossible, let alone something of this scale.) ...
.oO (But Axl's a prototype. He might have a security hole that was patched in later models. Layer didn't test against
his data.)
*pulls up the copies of Axl's pre-modified data, comparing it to his latest data, as well as data from a standard New Gen*
.oO (The copy chip
itself doesn't seem to be damaged. That's good... I guess.)
*starts by looking over portions of data that are highlighted as 'different' between Axl and later models*
.oO (Optimization. Optimization. Improved readability. Optimization...
Minor bugfix. More optimization... There's the ability to copy Reploids of other sizes, but other than that, I can't see any major new-) ...
. (Wait... Axl's missing something else! If I'm right...)
*looks between both the digital models of the copy chips for physical differences, as well as the code*
.oO (I suspect...)
*starts a simulation, subconsciously holding her breath* ...
.oO (
YES! A security hole that allows his
base DNA to be changed!) ...
.oO (That still doesn't explain some things, but if I should be able to use this to reverse most of the damage.)
Axl, please report to maintenance- *door opens to let the three Hunters in* Oh!
There you-
Wait, Zero?! How...
... I'll explain later.
But it
did seem to leave Zero drained.
Right now, I just want a check-up and some rest.
... I'll go get a nurse. *heads off to press a 'call nurse' button as the others help Zero to a recovery bed*
8. Restoring Axl
So you wanted to see me anyway?
Okay, good news! I found an exploit that I think Gate used, and I should be able to use it to get you at least
mostly back to normal.
At least, I can get you back into your normal body, and remove Sigma's data from your sys-
*glomped*
oof! *squeeze* Thank you!
...
.oO (Wait... Why am I getting defensive?)
*laughs nervously* Okay! Don't thank me yet!
*gently pushes Axl off* I still need to actually
use it.
Do it.
But I still have to-
Do it.
There's are other-
Do it. It might not-
Do it! *hands up in a 'calm down/don't hurt me' position* Okay! Just let me get something ready!
.oO (I guess I can do it twice if I need to...)
*
*preparing things on her terminal* So you...
really cured them?
...
*nod*
That's...
How?! ... I don't know
how... But apparently Sigma knew that I have this...
power, and Axl remembered.
That's... Wow... ...
*turns her attention back to the present* ... Okay, Axl. Lie face-down, please.
*does so, lining his head up with the face-hole of the table*
Now, you
might need to be awake for this.
Oh... Yay.
This
is something that needs precision, so I'm going to have to use restraints.
*listens as restraints pop up and strap him down, the face-hole constricting to brace his head* ... Okay then.
*walks up behind Axl* Okay, let's get you opened up... *inserts a
really thin tool in a
very tiny seam and, with a little fiddling, gets his helmet to separate from the rest of his head, exposing the circuitry underneath*
.oO (Ow...)
*sets the tool down and picks up the ends of some wires, which she proceeds to clip to specific circuits*
.oO (Okay, black to ground... Blue to output... Red to input 1... Yellow to input 2...)
*inhales sharply*
Axl?
Y-you've got it. Just keep going.
...
*quickly double-checks the connections*
*returns to the console*
Okay, first you'll be copying your own data. *presses button*
...
*shifts*
*glow fades*
It's working!
Hold on. Now I'm using the exploit to overwrite the base DNA. ...
*clenching teeth harder*
Overwrite will finish in 3... 2... 1... ... Now we just need to wait a minute.
What for?!?
This should work better if the transformation self-terminates. Just a little longer.
.oO (Hurry...!)
Half a minute... Ten seconds... Now.
*flickers with light briefly*
*but form doesn't change*
*sigh with relief*
Is it over??
Yes. Just give me a moment. *walks over to Axl, where she removes the cables and closes up his head* *she then walks back over to the console and retracts the restraints*
*immediately takes the chance to get up, as if he can't wait to get away from the table*
Are you okay?
How do you feel?
Sorry. Just... bad memories.
*pauses to take a look at himself, glad to see the familiar blue-and-red*
Yeah, I think I'll be okay.
That's good.
Why don't you get some rest and let the nurses take a look at you? I'll see if there's anything else to fix, and in the meantime, maybe we can get you cleared for duty again.
*smile broadens* Okay!
*let out a small laugh when they see Axl's enthusiasm*
I'm glad to see you're feeling better, but I guess I'll have to see you later.
Is there a problem?
Well... I promised I'd mediate between two Rinamian groups, and I need to prepare for it.
Oh. Uh... Good luck with that.
*nods* Good luck, X.
*nods...*
*...before heading for the door*
9. Results
*speaking with Axl, holding a tablet* So it looks like you're
mostly back to normal specs.
...
*wakes up, the cover from the recovery bed retracting*
You still have some higher processor function. Frankly, I'm not sure I'll be
able to remove that...
Well... check it out, if you can. Any improvement is good improvement.
*hearing his friends’ voices, gets up*
One of the other things I've noticed is that your aging unit is
completely disabled.
Do you
want that one fixed?
..
*busts out laughing*
I think I'll live without.
Axl?
*looks over*
Hey! Zero! You're awake!
And you're... normal.
Well, he's
mostly normal. I wasn't able to
completely undo the changes that Gate caused, and I haven't looked over the remaining differences in detail.
But it looks like most of the differences are minor, and I'm sure we can clear him for active duty.
...
That's good. Glad to have you back.
.oO (Did Zero just...
smile?) ...
Axl?
Oh! Uh..
Thanks!
... What about you, Zero? How are you feeling?
Better. What do the readings say?
*pulls up Zero's readings* Well, they're within tolerances.
So basically, you're back to normal!
.oO ("Normal"...)
... Alright, thanks.
I'll run these by the nurses and then by Signas. I'm sure they'll be glad to hear the news.
*sheepishly* Especially since taking care of the fugitives is taxing our resources; we need all the help we can get.
Yes! Thanks, Alia!
No problem! I'll let you know when you have your first mission.
Great! Thanks!
*has a spring in his step as he heads out of the maintenance room with Zero*
Won't it be great to get back out on the field?
*a hint of sadness in his expression as he looks at Axl* Heh. It will certainly be nice to actually
do something.

((Note: Zero ends up bringing a tyro to the Sermekian/Rinamian negotiations shortly afterward.))
