I don't know how active or successful this group will be, but I wanted to make it so all of the veg NTWFers have a place to get together, maybe share recipes, experiences, ideas, ask questions, and other things like that. Even if you aren't vegetarian, you're welcome to join in on conversation (unless you're trying to start a debate - please take that to DD).
So, um. To kick things off! What kinds of things do you eat/not eat, how long have you been vegan or vegetarian, and why did you begin that lifestyle?
I've been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for about two years. At first I started because I thought it would make me healthier, but then the idea of mass murdering animals/eating meat became disgusting to me. Lately I've been thinking about becoming vegan (I feel guilty whenever I eat an egg...), and so I've been cutting back on eggs and milk, but I'm thinking it'd be smarter to hold off on fully transitioning until I'm out of my parents' house and am fully responsible of cooking my own meals. XD If anyone has any advice on veganism, I'd be glad to hear. <3

I'm a vegan, but I'm quite useless in discussions about recipes and eating habits. xD; *can't cook* I eat... vegetables, and fruits, and things, in various combinations; I have a terrible weakness for potatoes; spinach is excellent but I refuse to eat cauliflower; mangoes and apples are my favorite fruits. I've been vegan for almost ten years, because my dad is vegan and so when I was growing up we never had meat or dairy in our house, and I just never could imagine eating differently. The reason I haven't been vegan for my whole life is that when I was a little kid I did sometimes eat non-vegan things at relatives' houses, because other people wanted to make me healthy by feeding me nutrients. Because I've never considered an alternative to being vegan, I'm not much good at discussing how it affects my lifestyle, since my family is supportive and it's just normal to me. xD; But I'm happy to give high-fives to fellow vegans/vegetarians and engage in the occasional commiserating over the conditions animals experience in the meat industry.

Some time last year I decided I wanted a healthier diet, but I didn't want to completely give up meat, so I attempted the "semi-vegetarian" lifestyle. It was like taking my old, horrible eating habits and...inverting them. Instead of eating huge amounts of meat (Any kind, fatty or lean) and a very small amount of only certain types of vegetables, I ate a ton of veggies and small portions of lean mean.
It worked out pretty well! I had more energy, my skin looked a lot less sallow, and my GI upsets stopped. Oh, and I began to lose weight.
Now I'm not sure if I can even call myself a semi-vegetarian anymore, but it helped to kick me into living healthier. But yeah! I'm all for semi-vegetarianism/vegetarianism/veganism. Good stuff. Makes ya feel great. |D

Haaa. It's okay, Dju. I kind of depend on meat as well, hence why I chose to be semi-veg over veg. I can't sit down in restaurant once in a while and not have some kinda meat. XD

But for the benefit of those who don't know veggie jargon... I eat dairy and eggs, but I don't eat chicken or fish. I've been a vegetarian... Since the summer before last. I think. *not sure* There are a few reasons why I became a vegetarian. One, if I ever thought about what I was eating when I ate meat, it made me a little sick. Two, the healthiness factor. Three... a pun on my name, I'd be a vegetarian Hunter. ... The last one was only a minor thing, though.

I'm totally vegetarian and don't eat any sort of meat, but I still drink milk and eat cheese. I don't really eat eggs, just because I don't like them, but I will eat them in stuff like cakes and whatnot. Have been since I was around... eight? Nine? Something like that. Mostly just for "I don't want to eat animals!" reasons.

I'm vegetarian, and have been my whole life. =3 As for why, I was raised that way. (Also, I believe it's healthier and because it goes along with my religion.)
As for what I eat, pretty much anything that's not meat. xD; (Although I will admit I need to do better about eating actual vegetables... >.>) I do use dairy and eggs and the like, and I could probably give up milk if I really wanted to, but I don't really want to. xD;

*revives*
I just saw this thread and I kinda... have a question. For those of you who started out eating meat but switched to vegan/vegetarian, was the transition particularly hard on you at all? I don't know much about how vegetarianism is actually practiced... what exactly can you eat that still makes you feel reasonably full when all animal proteins are off the table?
Because frankly, I'd like to go vegetarian, but I'm worried I may also go insane from the rampant steak-cravings... xD

I've had vegetarian sausage, it's extremely tasty. Though I have heard that there is no vegetarian steak. ?__? Woe indeed.

I'm not a vegetarian and probably won't be (though I plan to drop red meat from my diet), but quinoa is an amazing source of protein. It's also ten times tastier than pasta and rice.

Because frankly, I'd like to go vegetarian, but I'm worried I may also go insane from the rampant steak-cravings... xDThe transition was not hard for me at all. I quit cold-turkey one day. What can you eat that makes you full? XD; (Fun fact: The other day I ate out at a vegan restaurant, where the servings were pretty small, and I left feeling fuller than I usually do at standard American restaurants, where the servings are three times as big. XD When you're eating fresh healthy food, you WILL be satisfied. ^_^) Contrary to popular belief, meat is not the primary staple of the human diet. I eat lots and lots of beans, lots of (unsalted) nuts. Lentils are fabulous, peanut butter is good, whole grain stuff is good, eggs are good, yogurt's good... plus, a lot of vegetables have protein as well. Really, it's not hard at all to get all your protein for the day. ^^ As long as you eat healthy, you'll pretty much be good. It's important to have a bit of protein at every meal. A lot of my dinners are just what my family eats, without the meat. Some things I eat for dinner pretty often are spaghetti, stir-fry, soup, Mexican food, mushroom ravioli, stuff like that. For breakfast lately I have been having fruit and a little protein, and for lunch I often have some lentil soup and a salad, or something like that. It's a lot of fun to experiment with new foods - I have tried so many new things since becoming veg.

T.T It is completely possible (well, depending on the type of anemia I guess) to lead a vegetarian lifestyle even if you're anemic. There are plenty of other sources of iron besides meat. ^^ I'm sorry your family was unsupportive. That's really discouraging, and happens to me all the time, too. =/ i'm not a veggie either and i never will be but recently one of my friends introduced me to what i thought was impossible: a yummy veg dish O: i had a quorn lasagne and a veggie burer, soooo yummy -pats belly- xD XD That is something I never understand... is meat a necessary ingredient in order for food to be edible/delicious?
