To sum it up, Strife has become a bonefied villain. Err, do you mean bona fide? ^^; Ah, of course! Thanks Ice. x3 'Bona fide' is often used in dog-related puns, so I got confused there with the actual spelling. x3

Name: Ethan Age: Somewhere in the late-preteen-to-early-teen area (About 13) Appearance: Fit, fairly muscular. Average height. Fair skin. Sandy-blond hair which is fairly short, but grown out just a little bit. And his eyes are pale-ish, light green with a hint of brown around the edges. He is a cyborg and has a few visible implants, wires of some sort can also be seen in places where they come close to the surface of his skin. Picture can be found here. ( I forgot the wires, I'll add them! The wires have been added now) Outfit: Black pants, black boots, and when he's wearing a top (which is most of the time, just usually when he's not out in hot weather, working out, or other miscellaneous times when he might take it off) it's either a black long-sleeved shirt where the sleeves come down to his wrists, or a black tank top. Weapon of Choice: In close-combat, either a knife or his fists/feet. In long-range combat, a firearm of just about any sort. But he's a fast learner and can use pretty much anything. Other Notable Traits: Precision, can give detailed analysis, and has photographic memory, all thanks to his implants. Despite the fact that his implants give him photographic memory, Ethan has amnesia. He was found in a drifting stasis pod, in stasis, with no memory of his past. His amnesia was chemically-induced and wiped his natural brain clean of all memories, all he remembers is what was left on his internal hard drive. (Note: Ethan was not told that his memory was erased by a chemical) While the specific chemical has been identified, other clues as to where Ethan may have come from are scarce; even the origin of his cryopod has yet to have been determined. Despite the occasional sadness when wondering about his past, Ethan holds up pretty well and does his best as a part of Spacefleet. Hard drive: (partially visible on his forehead, near his left eyebrow) Includes memory database and various programs to run (with) his implants. Rechargeable battery (not visible): Function should be obvious. Power inlet (visible on the right side of his waist, and a little bit toward his back): Function should also be obvious. This had an adapter plugged into it when Ethan was found (as the actual implant can not plug into any of the common outlets/extension cords). IR sensor+emitter (visible on his forehead, above his left eyebrow): Sensor determines light levels. Combined with the emitter (which is inactive while light levels are high) it lets his see in the dark, and pick up on object temperatures from a distance. Small solar panel (visible, on the same piece of metal as the IR): Also determines certain kinds of light levels. Can help keep his battery from running dead when exposed to sunlight. Atmosphere checker (visible, on the same piece of metal as the IR and solar panel): Checks various stats about the atmosphere Ethan is in. This includes oxygen levels, levels of other kinds of chemicals, humidity, and barometric pressure. Radio transmitter/receiver (not visible): Picks up radio signals of various forms and frequencies. Can also send out short-range signals on same frequency range. I just did a character development/profile for Ethan. *will add more as more information is made known*

Name: Ink
Age: 15
Appearance: Short, skinny. She has blue eyes, and brown hair that is always pulled into a long braid down her back. She wears glasses, and is forever pushing them up on her nose (and then telling herself to get some contacts).
Outfit: Usually found wearing jeans and a wrap-around top in all seasons. She wears plain white Keds, which aren't so white anymore from over wearing.
Weapon of Choice: Ink is a purple belt in Tae Kwon Do and prefers hand-to-hand combat. She does keep a few knives on her person, just in case.
Other Notable Traits: Ink is very interested in molecular sciences, and detests life sciences. (Cloning aside.)

Purple belt in Tae Kwon Do? I knew some martial arts had purple belts, but I'm in Tae Kwon Do now and we don't have purple belts, but a) this could be just dependent on each individual studio and the company/individuals that supplies them with belts, and/or b) this guild doesn't nessecarily depict normal current stuff, so maybe martial arts and stuff are a little different. Just as a note, the belt ranking system at my studio goes white, yellow, yellow w/ black stripe(a.k.a. yellow/black), green, green/black, blue, blue/black, red, red/black, black. I think there are different ranks of black, but it will be a few years before I know for certain.

My Tae Kwon Do classes were the same way. But, when we got a new instructor, we practiced a different style. The forms were different, excluding the white belt form, and the ranking was different. Our belts go white, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, red, brown, black. There are two degrees of black belt, and then it goes on to first dan, second dan, ect.

Post by Fraze on Oct 3, 2007 20:25:18 GMT -5
Name: Fraze
Age: 26
Gender: Male.
Appearance: Human. 6'0"/183 cm tall. Dancer's physique: thin upper body with little musculature, but strong legs and feet. Hazel eyes. Curly long, brown hair pulled back into a bushy ponytail that falls to a bit below the neck.
Outfit: For day-to-day life when on duty, standard Spacefleet uniform. When off-duty, very casual clothes: shorts, t-shirt, sandals. When in combat situation, skinsuit (see below) underneath other clothes.
History: Formerly a member of a distant, much larger interstellar military program--and technically, still a member of this organization. During this time, Fraze worked in special operations--secret missions of varying importance. At one point, he was charged with acting as a guard for a space-based science program that was attempting to create a Singularity Sphere (see Other Notable Information, below). The experiment was successful, but the station and all onboard it were killed in an accident. Fraze could have saved the people on the station, but his orders were to secure the Sphere first, so he did not have time to do so. He was used as a scapegoat, and for the next few years was put on long missions intended to keep him away from the organization as much as possible. Eventually, Fraze applied for an exchange program with Spacefleet. His superiors agreed, happy to send him off and hoping that he would be quietly forgotten. He considers joining Spacefleet one of the best decisions he has made.
Personality: Tries not to take anything too seriously, even during serious situations. Knows how tenuous life is, and so wants to take as much from it as possible. Very laid-back, usually keeps his emotions level. Tries to solve problems nonviolently if at all possible. At the same time, is usually fully aware of the gravity of a situation and acts accordingly. Furthermore, he feels a strong sense of guilt for the accident mentioned above, and is still hoping to find some way to atone for what happened.
Weapon of choice: Several, depending on the type of combat. For hand-to-hand, capoeira (though this may better be described as foot-to-foot or foot-to-head). For melee, Table of Smiting. A stone table roughly 3'x3'x3', specially fashioned as a weapon. Can be used as a blunt weapon of varying lethality. Getting hit with the flat surface will just knock the wind out of a person, but getting hit with the side or one of the legs can cause serious damage. Has grips on two of the legs, so can be wielded either one- or two-handed. One leg has a joint that allows it to rotate, so the weapon can be swung round like a mace. Has a retractable blade running along one edge. (Why yes, I have given an absurd amount of thought to the dynamics of table fighting. *Shifty eyes*) For firefights, usually a standard plasma rifle. May also use a flechette gun, though not often since it has a very wide spray that causes significant collateral damage.
Armor of choice: microthin skinsuit. A semi-sentient semi-organism that borders on being self-aware. When not being worn, looks like a blob of mercury small enough to fit in a shot glass; when worn, expands to cover a person from head to foot. Has its own power supply, and can absorb energy from its surroundings (light, heat or, if necessary, the wearer's own body) in order to recharge. If it completely runs out of energy, it will revert to its neutral form--a shapeless blob. The skinsuit performs many functions, which require varying amounts of energy. It has all the functionality of a ship's computer: it can send and receive communications, perform sensor sweeps, and capture still or moving images, and it can interface with Spacefleet's database. It can become rigid, either to act as impact armor, or to set a broken bone or staunch blood flow from a wound. It acts as a spacesuit (including rebreather) and hazardous environment suit. As a spacesuit, it can extend two large wings (resembling insect wings rather than bird wings) that propel the wearer by catching light and can act as a parachute. It can temporarily enhance the wearer's strength or speed, though at significant expense to the wearer. (For example, it can be used to help the wearer jump several stories, but the wearer's legs will be very weak for several minutes afterward.) It can respond to the wearer's auditory and mental commands, and displays information through audio or visuals (images projected directly into the wearer's vision). Part of the suit may be detached for some reason--such as to cover another person--though the functions of the detached part are limited. And last, the suit has no internal structure. So, any part of the suit can perform the functions of any other part.
Other Notable Information: Fraze has two items of notable importance on him: a Singularity Sphere and a Universal Box. The Singularity Sphere is an immensely powerful bomb capable of destroying a solar system. Fraze is always trying to find a way to detonate it safely, and for obvious reasons has told very few people about its existence. The Universal Box is a container the size of a ring box that holds another universe within it. The room inside the box is the size of an airplane hangar, and contains a large array of weapons and equipment (such as medical equipment). The Sphere is kept inside a multiple-encryption protected lockbox inside another multiple-encryption protected lockbox, which is in turn kept inside the Universal Box. The Box is locked with a thumbprint lock. When not in use, it can be stored in Fraze's left shoulder, where it diffuses somewhat (so it looks like a large welt rather than a box).

Actually, I'm not sure that the flechette exists only in that book series. A similar weapon, albeit with less shots, with the same name exists in the Jedi Knight/Dark Forces series of computer games. To the best of my knowledge it originated in the series in Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast.
So it could be both the book series and the game series drew inspiration for the weapon from the same source (or each other; which came first?) possibly a real world prototype weapon that never made its way to mass production, possibly due to ammunition costs.

Oh, I know that's not the first place where a flechette gun is used, that's just where I took the idea from personally. The descriptions are incredible...but that's another story.
But anyway, the first Hyperion book came out in 1989, and first mentions a flechette gun in the 5th chapter (or possibly the 2nd, I'm not entirely sure). However, I looked up flechettes on Wikipedia. Turns out Flechette is the French word for dart, just like you would guess. The US Army tried making a sort of flechette gun in the 1960s, which would fire several 3-5 cm long nail-like darts. Never got into production, though. Flechette weapons are also found in a number of other sci-fi works (books, video games, etc).

Name: Shrimpy the Slushie Faerie, Mistress of The Splut (answers to "Shrimpy")
Race: Faerie
Age: 637 in human years - "late teens" for a faerie
Gender: Female
Rank: Frycook (Support Class)
Appearance: Rather short (5' 5" even). Shoulder lengthed, straight, thick, dark brown hair with bangs to the eyebrow. Dark, forest green eyes. Very pale skin tone. Pointed ears. A large set of fragile, pale blue faeries' wings.
Personality: Quirky, curious, and a tad bit naive, Shrimpy loves to laugh and make other people laugh and isn't difficult to befriend. She does her job to the best of her ability (which isn't very impressive - she didn't know what an eggbeater was at first for goodness sake!) and enjoys being able to look forward to the rewards of (meager) accomplishments. But she doesn't care too much for her rank of Frycook and is all too eager to work hard for a promotion. Working hard is a little dangerous, though, due to inexperience with kitchen utensils and not being familliar with the kitchen.
Clothing of Choice: In leisure, Shrimpy normally wears a lot of greens - dark greens, pale greens, moss greens, avacado greens, etc.. What she wears depends on her mood and/or what she's doing. She'll wear almost anything, from comfy jumpsuits, to slacks and a tunic, to flowy evening gowns. But she despises sweaters and will never be seen wearing one. Ever. On duty, she usually wears a comfortable pair of forest green slacks, a pale green tunic, a pair of shiny black leather boots, and an off-white apron.
Weapons of Choice: Although in the Support Class, Shrimpy is the Slushie Faerie, and as such she has just about any magic ability that can be related to Slushies. She can form Slushies out of the atoms in the air (don't ask me how) in just about any flavor you can think of. Besides just being a refreshing beverage, Slushies are often used by her as projectiles. Beware the Splut! She can also work with ice and has freezing capabilities. One of her more miscellaneous, and devastating, spells is summoning a Slushie Tsunami out of absolutely nowhere. She usually refrains from using the tsunami as anything other than a last resort.
