I've been at this forum for many moons. I've seen the rise of this challenge take place on an annual basis, and yet... I have never participated.
So... for the first (and probably the ONLY) time ever, Wanderer shall enter this years whatever-the-heck-it's-called NANOWRIMO, or something.
What my story will be about, well... I've a few ideas. And if I'm feelin energetic, it will be as close to original as can be. Otherwise, I might do an adaptation of The Divine Comedy, At the Mountains of Madness, or even Thomas Paine's Common Sense.
It depends solely on real life, but I think I feel the urge to participate in something that encourages me to forge a story. More details as time passes.

In these tough times, and knowing that in the years to come, there may be equal or greater challenges that await, I want to create a story that speaks of someone struggling to make it, finding a unique "out," building upon it, then subsequently losing it.
One untitled plot idea is a man who is coping with depression, and feels he has no purpose. One day inspiration hits, and he purchases a large plot of land in the mountains. There he begins the process of building a refuge. A "perfect paradise" which he hopes will attract like-minded people to him, and he can start a utopian society. Except... he quickly discovers everyone has their own perception of a perfect place. If it gets too boring, I'll throw in a Ninja and Pirate fight for good measure.
I dunno, I'm sorta leaning towards a theme that features a cycle that goes:
Nothing -------> Everything -------> Loss --------> Redemption
