So... for the record, I was thinking of aiming for a smaller word count this year, considering I didn't even get 10K last year. Maybe 20K, or 25K... or maybe I'll make the minimum 10K with a goal being one of the aforementioned two.
Anyway, I've had this idea for a NaNo for awhile now.
So there you have it.
Like I said, I don't have a title yet. All I've come up with so far is maybe something with the name of the fantasy world in it (whatever it ends up being), or 'A World Without Magic.' The latter works, but I'm not sure if it's what I'm looking for. Suggestions will be appreciated.
And I'll want some help on this before I make the final version. I'm not sure if I'll want to post what I want here, though. I know I'll need to say somewhere, somehow. After all, how can I ask for help without saying what I need help with?
Anyway, I've had this idea for a NaNo for awhile now.
How I came up with the idea: One day, I was thinking about how we have a lot of stories involving magic or advanced technology. I believe I figured it was because they have something our world doesn't and thus is fascinating to us. I was wondering what kind of stories or fairy tales, with that kind of idea, would exist in a fantasy world.
Then I thought: 'What if they had stories about a world without magic?'
So here's the basic plot idea:
In a world of magic, bards and parents-tucking-their-kids-in-bed, tell stories of a world without enchantment and incantations. They tell of people doing everything with their own hands, growing stronger doing things through their own labor, and learning to be patient until their tasks are accomplished, but knowing nothing about the wonders that magic brings.
One boy, enthralled by the stories, wishes to make contact with the people of such a world, tell them about the wonders of magic, and learn things from them as well. So he commits himself to the study of magic, until he is able to cast a spell that will pull two people from that world so that he may make his wish come true. He makes the final preparations, then begins the spell, using so much power that he exhausts himself before the spell is finished.
His attempt was successful... for the most part. Instead of bringing the individuals to his chamber where he cast the spell, they end up somewhere else in the world; far enough that he doesn't find them, but still fairly close. Two people, from the magic-less world, had been taken through the fabric of the very dimensions, and were lost somewhere in his land.
So when a family of humble farmers and a traveling elf stumble upon a book-smart, straight-A, logically-thinking girl and a very casual, rock-loving, game-addicted young man, personalities, manners, and beliefs clash. And people discover that the world without magic is not at all what they expected.
