This story is born of two older ideas that I've been fostering for quite some time. The first was for a short story called "Shades of Darkness" about an angel who falls in love with a human and how it affects them both. The second story, from which the novel takes its present title, was another love story about a young couple and their own bout of problems, namely getting pregnant out of wedlock in a very conservative society. Then came one night at a hotel when I was fantasizing about the former when, WHOOM, he spoke and I listened and I realised at last that the protagonist of the second story was actually his cousin. Never saw that coming!
So last year, I vowed to write this story this year, since the characters had really begun to grow on me intimately. However, at the start of last month, I decided upon a different idea after watching a show on the Discovery Channel about future technology, but then after a couple other things came up in life, I knew it was the right time to return at last to these characters who have grown closer to me now than ever any other character before.
- Characters -
The Seraphim are an elite race of humans who have been engineered with wings.
The Cherubim are normal men and women as known today.
The Nephilim are the outcast angels who had their wings removed.
The Wolves are a race considered sub-human and enslaved by the Seraphim.
The Mattachine family -
*mother* - As-yet-unnamed mother of the Mattachine household
Pryce "Solcis" - the eldest, a big business CEO
Beckinsale "Harlequin" - the middle child, a Seraph whose wings don't work
Sereni "Darkness" - the main protagonist, a Seraph who falls in love with a Wolf
Gustaf - the Mattachine's head servant, of the Cherubim race
Craig - Sereni's first crush, comically referred to as Chet Flash or Mr. Ian Woon
Anomo Wrin - a business partner of Pryce Mattachine
Roman Niwo - the Mattachine family's in-house tailor
(Quoted names: The Seraphim have second names to prevent people from having power over them.)
The Lucullan family -
Richard - Sereni's estranged uncle whose wings were removed when he was but a boy
Miles - Sereni's supposed cousin, but a few months younger than himself
The Rown family -
Naomi - Bella's mother
William - Bella's bigoted father
Bella - Miles' partner, he's drawn to her like a soldier to war
The Carentes family -
Michelle - Lucien's older sister, is slightly insane...slightly, I said
Lucien "Stone" - a Wolf who falls desperately in love with Sereni (three syllables: loo-see-en)
Rider Strong - a suitor to Michelle
Advisor Wattson - a tan-haired advisor to the war committee
Commander Gemma - a black-haired commander with a ponytail
General Tuomas - the head general of the Wolves' army
General Lydia - General Tuomas' military advisor
Allusions -
"Sereni" is from the Latin "serenus," calm, whereas Sereni is anything but peaceful.
"Miles" means "soldier" and "bella" means "wars."
"Luce carentes" refers to the dead, or unliving; "Lucien" and "luce" share the same Latin root ("lux").
Naomi Rown is an anagram of NaNoWriMo (as are Mr. Ian Woon, Anomo Wrin, and Roman Niwo).
The first lasting gay rights group was the Mattachine Society, named after a masque that always performed in masks.
Lucullan is from Latin Lucullanus for Licinius Lucullus, a Roman general famous for his wealth and the luxury of his banquets (Dictionary.com).
Rider Strong is also the name of the actor who played Shawn in Boy Meets World. That, however, was not why I chose the name.
Tuomas is the name of a member of the group Nightwish, whom I was writing at the time.
- Quotes -
- 11/1 - Then at last, Sereni reached his doorway and after ascending the last of the seven steps, glanced sideways back at where the Wolf had stood. But the man had already gone.
- 11/1 - Yet never in his wildest fantasies had he ever thought the man would've fallen straight into his very own hands.
- 11/2 - Pryce snorted. "He grabbed an apple and left."
- 11/3 - He set me free, telling me to leave, but I knew freedom would still be a far shot away. Flight for the wingless is always harder than it seems.
- 11/3 - Darkness grabbed something and turned, the two forced together, chest to chest, knees to knees. Stone slid his hand around the Seraph, trembling less from cold now than from fear, and folded his face into the Seraph’s shoulder.
- 11/4 - Sereni looked at his hands and tried to steady them, but to no avail. He felt a firm grasp take his arms, and he turned to look into Stone’s eyes as his body finally stilled in his embrace.
- 11/5 - Lucien gripped him tighter, and he stopped trying to muffle his cries.
- 11/6 - Miles turned to face him. "If it takes a man to love a man for that love to be found, then maybe it's time the world opens its eyes to the love that has to hide."
- 11/6 - "What was his name?" // Sereni grinned. "Craig. But he always called himself something else, maybe Chet Flash one week and Mr. Ian Woon the next."
- 11/7 - He stopped speaking, and at length the silence had worn thin and he opened his mouth once more.
- 11/8 - Sereni swallowed and looked back at the flame. The silver was slowly starting to shine as it leached the heat from the flame.
- 11/9 - I looked up at Lucien, knowing his smile was turned to mine even if the shadows crossed his face and kept it from my sight.
- 11/10 - The wind blew once more, ruffling their robes, and they kept walking towards the tall gates.
- 11/11 - Lucien nodded, his body alight with static again, his eyes aburn with new fire, and together they rose, as one body, and walked from the bedroom into the bath.
- 11/12 - Sereni raised his hand and pointed. "Lupus," he said. "The wolf. He's Orion's companion."
- 11/12 - I lost more than just my family that day.
- 11/13 - Lucien turned to him, took his shoulders, spoke eternity into silence, and then left Sereni standing alone as he ran after his sister.
- 11/14 - Then he jumped up from the puddle of blood and was out of sight before Lucien could even blink.
- 11/15 - He saw her face then, plump and pale, eyes flat and heartless. He knew that face.
- 11/16 - Lucien opened the door, Sereni still under his arm, and led them into the crowd, into the mess his sister had left behind for him.
- 11/17 - "To end the war," I said, but just hearing them, I knew how ridiculous they truly sounded.
- 11/18 - "Why's Beckinsale calling?" Sereni asked. // Pryce stared at the phone. "I have no idea, but I am about to find out."
- 11/19 - His heart swam circles around the pool, but he sat as rigid as a statue as she clung to him and held him down.
- 11/20 - Sereni glanced back at his mother, his heart shaking inside him, but with the very next step, he turned away.
- 11/21 - From behind them, Richard looked up and smiled. "Would you care for that tea now?"
- 11/22 - He smiled, turning away and waving for Lucien to follow. "Come now, let's get you dressed. You must be freezing."
- 11/23 - And even as I stood there, the minutes, the hours, the days and years passing me by like wind-blown leaves in the starlit sky, no one came, and I was alone.
- 11/24 - The girl turned to face him. Then she screamed.
- 11/25 - Downstairs, he joined the others in silence. They had nothing left tonight but to wait for morning to come.
- 11/26 - The Seraph just shook his head. "And this, Lucien, is why I love you."
- 11/27 - She reached out, still dreaming, and took his hand. But with another breath, she knew she had barely reached the bed.
- 11/28 - Sereni turned to Lucien, feeling like jelly on a summer's afternoon. "I need a hug," he said, and no sooner than that, the Wolf's arms were around him.
- 11/29 - The hand fell from her back and she blinked, the world still blurry. Maybe if it hadn’t spun so much, its colors wouldn’t’ve blurred. Yeah, that was why. Stupid world, spinning itself to blurriness.
- 11/30 - The towering, ornately-carved doors loomed overhead, and I felt small for the first time in my life. At least, for the first time since I had met Lucien, since I had confessed myself—my love—to him, and, I ask, did not my life begin only the moment I had met him?
- History -Thirteen hundred years ago, the Messiah came and gave men wings - the Seraphim, God's chosen people. But there remained the wingless and those whose wings had been taken, the Nephilim. And beneath them all, the Wolves, men so wild they lived among beasts. For centuries, the world has lived in peace, though such a delicate balance this is, even the shortest heartstring can tip the scales into chaos.
