Hate to interrupt the Guild War threads, but I had an idea the other day.
What about a Mercenary Guild?
We would be a mercenary organization, who takes requests from other parties and sends out soldiers to aid paying clients. The missions might be as large-scale as war, or as small as a theft or assassination.
However, we're not ninjas, but soldiers (technology level could be debated)... I suppose someone could even come into this guild and bring with them their Pirate, Ninja, or Mage persona, it could be interesting x3
It'd probably be too late to bring Mercenaries into the guild wars, but for any future guild-war RPs, the mercenaries might be a neutral group whose members are hired by the other guilds as aid.
What's the consensus? Yesno?

I like the idea! It would give all four guilds a chance to goof off together, right?
Ha! Mercenaries. Brilliant idea. I say that's a winner idea ^^ *pokes the mods*

Hmm, let's see here...
Ninjas can sneak and kill the mercs.
Pirates ridicule the mercs into making them walk the plank.
Knights get angry at mercs for stealing teh show and decide to get rid of them.
Mages get to, well, "hit on them".
Nice idea!

I really like this idea. I'm not quite sure yet if I'd join, but it's a definite possibility.

I dunno, it sounds to much like the Ninjas (sneaky, up for hire) and a bit like Spacefleet, but that's because our first rank for ground troops is mercenary, and we are soldiers in that guild, (plus a science department). Not to pop your bubble or anything, but I just don't see it having enough distinction.
Techincally, accept for Pirates vs Ninja, all the guilds are neutral. It's only when conflict arises that sides are taken, and the sides can go in any direction.
The idea has potential, but it needs more thought. Something to set it apart and give it life. You can make it work, but it will take some effort. Take this as a prompt to start brainstorming. What do the Mercs. have that others don't? What will drive the RPing environment? You say you can be hired, how will we hire you? Discussion is needed for this.

Well in my opinion, while Ninjas are more organised, following strict guidelines etc. Mercs however are more outlaw-ish, not really caring about rules, ranks and etc.

I get the idea mercs would be more willing to fight amongst themselves than a guild like the Ninjas. Mercs would be more rougish, like Aeri said, in my opinion. ^__^ And have cooler weapons than just swords and junk, and not sit around drinking tea all the time. definitely count me in for this The first guild that has actually really appealed to me.

Mercenaries would be rather like rogue warriors who fight for hire. They'd probably have something like a secret military base... technology level would be higher than knights but lower than for Spacefleet and some magic would probably be involved (e.g. guns, swords, hand-to-hand combat and magic would all be weapons used by mercenaries).
There'd be a bit of a hierarchy, sure, but it's up for debate how formal we want it to be. I'm thinking that it would be cool to have a sort of rogue military organization that doesn't answer to any other group, and while they have their own hierarchy and code of law it's frequently bent and broken.
There would be a leader, or several leaders, who would assign missions to the other soldiers. Possibly the leaders would specialize - say, one for ground combat missions, another for covert missions, and another for attacks which require special magic or technology.
In fact, I think the tech/magic level will strike a nice balance between Mages, Knights and Spacefleet.
I'm going to put up a list in the first post of everyone who'd join... PM me or post if you want in.

Ok, now it sounds like it has a life of it's own. '
And as a wonky idea, outside the Merc. Board you can have your assasin missions occur. For example, say Merc A has been assigned a mission by Merc B. Merc B is a leader. The assignment is to go undercover and plant a bug on Forumer C, who is not a member of the mercenaries. This must be done in public. The person might impersonate someone and then glomp the target. They then report back to the thread where they recieved their mission, and link to the thread where this occured, with a quote of the glomp, or a screenshot, with a statement that when glomping a small bug was attached to the person's shirt. The process is then evaluated, and improvements are suggested.

Ah! In Spacefleet, Mercs are actually the starting rank of Combat Class members. ^^; So if this idea goes through, i'll need to figure out a new name for it.
Other possible names for a guild like this would be Rogues or Thieves. If you decide to go with Mercs though, i'm sure i'd be able to do some renaming in Spacefleet. =3

Just a suggestion but maybe renaming it to Freelancers? And yes, it is inspired by the game but also by the term itself.
"A freelancer or freelance worker is a person who pursues a profession without a long-term commitment to any one employer." ~Wikipedia
Kinda like a mercenary but more broad so it can cover people like thieves and other outcasts from the guilds x3

It kind of sounds like an outbreach from a Naruto type mission. That's how they opperate in said situation mostly. I wouldn't remodel the Ninjas for that though. No name suggestions.
