Heartless are creatures that don't have hearts of thier own, so they mindlessly and hungrily collect the hearts of other people. Those hearts which they collect become Heartless in turn. Heartless are mindless animals, and ally themselves with whoever's strongest if it means they can have more hearts.

When a person's heart is taken, the soul and body are left behind. These transform into Nobodies. Nobodies have brains and can think and plan. They do not have hearts, and therefore cannot feel emotion. Strong people leave behind strong Nobodies and Heartless.

Without all three elements, the heart, the soul and the body, one cannot truly exist. That is why the Nobodies are named as they are.
