So this has been going down at other sites I'm at so I thought I'd bring it here, though I'm not sure if it's been discussed before.
Goths? What do you think of them? I know a lot of people find them a little hypocriticl, almost as if it was the default for being original.
I had more to say but I can't phrase it. Do you understand what I mean? Discuss.

Goths are rebels, as a whole. At my school (and many others, I'm sure), the only way you CAN be a rebel is to be a goth.
...Okay.
I think South Park sums it up best:
"In order to be non-comformist like us, you have to dress like us and listen to the same music we do."
That's really what it boils down too.
I think instead of trying to be non-comformist, people should focus on being themselves, and be happy with the fact that some people may be similar to them.

Being Goth isn't only dressing in black and acting, appearing a certain way. There is more to it than that. It goes to the beliefs of the person and how they feel inside. They shouldn't be judged based on their style of life, or you could make a topic like this on any fad, any "style". Like punk, skaters, preps, etc. They are all still people and so why not let them be and do as they please.
And we shouldn't stereotype all goths as hypocrits, I mean, sure, of course there will be some, but like everything else in life there are varyations.

Goth, for the most part, has come to mean style. Dark dress, Hot Topic-ish clothes and stuff. It's hard to really categorize. At times I'm pseudo goth. Yui has definite goth influences in her style.
Pretty much goth = anti-prep.

Goth, ironicly, has become so commercilized it's hilarous. If anything, it's the niche for those who don't want to be part of a niche, yet, in the end, at part of a niche.
That's not to say that Hot Topic isn't an amazing store. I myself bought every single Harry Potter shirt they have (I can't help it. Whenever I pass by the store I run in and come out with at least a shirt).
But then again, what is with any sterotype. Even the dread 'prep' isn't as such. My roommate is, as the definition goes, a 'prep'. Yet I don't look at her and feel that she is the scum of the Earth, she's a very nice girl (though I find it odd when she talks with her friends on the phone about how wasted she got last night). I guess when you get out of high school you realize how silly those things are, because they mean nothing. They simply rip people apart and cause people to hate each other for NO reason.
That was one reason I liked my AP classes because you were put with all sorts of people and, in the end, it broke these stupid barries that a 'goth' can't be friends with a 'prep' and such.

Goths are neither here nor there. I like my friend, who happens to be a goth. Groups in my school fall more on personality lines, or used to. I am friends with a huge variety of people ^^ And I could be goth or prep from day to day. The subcultures of groups like that are cool though. I think it's great people have strong 'gothic' identities or so on.

There was a girl who was semi-goth on the newspaper comittee (sp?) last year with me. She was more goth/punk, and was kind of quiet, but she was a nice person, and wrote awesome poetry and stories. You can't judge people. I mean, really. This boy I know thinks everybody who shops at Abercrombie is a prep. I mean I wear Abercrombie (sometimes, not constantly), and I'm not classified as a prep. *shrugs* Crazy world it is out there...

*Shrug* You can be prep or gothic, it doesn't really matter to me. Afterall no one is truely unique/original unless they have been born with rainbow skin, but that hasn't happened. People should really stop worrying about image, there are better things to worry about.

Goth has really become an image. I've never met someone goth, most people haven't; but goths are based solely on their appearance. You can be goth just by putting on black lipstick and black pants. (ok, no, npt really, but you know what i mean)

Dude. Goth. Stuff. Rules.
I totally love their style. No idea why they are "outcasts" or stuffs. It's the person inside, not the clothes or makeup they wear. If I didn't have to wear a uniform, I would spend all my extra lunch money on goth stuff.

but goths are based solely on their appearance. There are two definitions of Gothic. The first is relating to the Goths, a germanic tribe. The second definition is having sensibilities or tastes leaning towards the morbid and morose. Let's take a look at Gothic fashion as it exists today. It is categorized by three aspects; the first is the colour black. How this ties to the second definition of Gothic is pretty obvious. Black is the colour that is most often associated with the dead. You wear it at funerals, it represents sterility, and end of life, etc. Another big aspect is corsets and other Victorian era type clothing. This is the time period most associated with 'Gothic' anything. Gothic fiction; Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, and other great Gothic novels were written at this time. (They were very pessimistic, and a little bit over blown when you analyze it.) Gothic architecture was very popular at this time also. The final bit tends to be vinyl, buckles and chains, but that's because of the Gothic subculture's close ties to the bondage sub-culture. My tastes can often be considered Gothic; I enjoy many 'Gothic' bands, I like Gothic litteriture, and my tastes in movies, toys and comics are almost always towards the spooky and horrific. That being said, I don't dress in a way that could be considered Gothic at all. I also don't have a pessimistic outlook on life. When you try to categorize people, or sum up an entire group, you are in essence putting square pegs into round holes. We are more than what we wear, we are more than what we read or listen to. We are more than that, greater even then the sum of our parts. Filling away other people might be very comforting and such, but labels in the end only bring people down.

I know, I totally agree. Pardon me, I should have put: Unfortunately goths are absed solely upon their appearance. It's the reality of the whole situation. The "goth" look is how most associate with goths.

And...*sigh*...I have mostly been judged by the way I dress. I really haven't been able to talk to anybody because they won't listen!!! *Bangs head on wall.* People here know I'm not a really bad person, yet IRL, I have been accused of doing drugs and...lets not go into the second one...Point is, Gothic is OK. Well, I really hav no other say in this, otherwise I would be dissing myself. XP
