I play by roughly following a petpage guide (http://www.neopets.com/~ellie_33tc) and for maps it's of course IDNQ. These two at least make sure I don't get lost and I more or less can decide what to use for skills.

Yep, the wallpaper is just... if you hit ctrl+a you get at least a readable blue background. By now I mostly rely on the maps for the way and the petpage only for the skills as this wallpaper is headache-inducing.

I like this guide quite a bit, and IDNQ for the maps ^_^ Other advice? Um. Follow the guides, I guess. Don't get lost? I like to overlevel (to make things easier on my party), but that's more of a personal choice.

Other than maps, I've always liked using this section of one of the guides on IDNQ, just to keep me on track as far as levelling up goes. But as for skills and such, I prefer choosing my own sets. xD; I found a system that worked well for me the first time, and I'll probably do nearly the same thing again now that I'm on my second run through. (Speaking of, I should actually play again one of these days. xP I got bored doing the first part of the Lost Desert without Velm, and my game has sat untouched for months. I am so predictable.)

Ever since I decided only to move straight and not diagonal and walk around the last battle-spot in normal mode for healing and only move forward after seven healing paces by switching into hunting mode, I'm always overlevelled. But at least it's better than having to wander around the same plot of landscape over and over again to reach a certain level for fighting a certaing boss-level-monster.
And yeah, Tamia, I know what you mean. I was so glad when I finally got Velm. No more dancing around the same spot for healing. I don't know what my time-record will say by the time I finish NQII in evil... I can't even remember how long ago I started it XD

I didn't know the characters got different experience each time. xD; On my Normal game, Rohane and Mipsy almost always levelled up together, then I think there was a bit of a gap before Talinia, and then Velm was always the last to hit a level. And I have a bad habit of underlevelling before facing a boss. xD; I've been playing it a bit safer on Evil, though. And yeah, Tamia, I know what you mean. I was so glad when I finally got Velm. The first part of the Lost Desert act is my absolute least favourite part of the game. Hard monsters, vulnerable Mipsy, and minimal options for healing. Then of course you get Velm and it's suddenly all great and you're suddenly all but invincible for a while. xD Heh. My Evil game is about a year and a half old now, which isn't really that bad when you consider that it took me five years to get through my game on Normal mode. >__>

My least favorite part is the first part of the Lost Desert, but coming at a close second is the city of Akhten-Ka xD All the monsters there either have damage shields or normal shields, both of which are really annoying... >>
And I really hate how Mipsy has so little health. She's my favorite character, yes, but it's still so annoying how monsters seem to target her just because she's weak.
