Well, it's probably not that much worse than the huge overhaul everything took to get customization. I guess for a while it might just be as bare as Mutant/Baby/Maraquan/Fruit <_<
The biggest confusion for me is that the Editorials have typically responded with (basically) flat no to any new pets for just that reason, though, so. *shrug*

I weep for the artists too, but mostly because of some of the really horrible comments that are being thrown out about this pet. I think it's fine - the more I look at it, the more it grows on me, and there's really nothing wrong with it.
To be honest, my first instinct was thinking this was a prank, and my second that they are perhaps going to release customisable petpets? Because this really does look an awful lot like a petpet.
If it is a real new species, then hopefully a huge positive response instead of two third of the site griping and moaning like they always do when we get new shiny things, would encourage them to think about releasing more species (one every few years - or just not as long as eight years between species, maybe?), or things that take a lot of art.
Also, make sure to spoiler all your stuff, because the way its being talked about makes it pretty hard for anyone to resist checking out what is going on. I had it spoilt on the NTWF Neoboard where I would have rather lived in ignorance until something more solid came out.
And also also: maybe this was the "big thing" Snarkie spoke of?

The customization overhaul was about 50 pets, with maybe fewer than 10 special colors each (that weren't colorfills, that is). Something in the realm of hundreds of characters.
Did you know there are 12,000 wearables? (Not counting Backgrounds) Even if 1/2 of them are trinkets/foregrounds, and maybe a couple thousand are species-specific, that's multi-species wearables in the THOUSANDS. THOUSANDS.
So yes. It probably IS that much worse than the Customization overhaul.

Honestly, I kinda thought the new potential pet was cute and would love to have it. I'd wait until the artists had some time to make customization for it but it has been eight years since a new pet came out and the sight is called NeoPETS. I don't understand how the TNT artist world works but I'm sure with a year or two time the pet would be no different then any other pet. I'm sure it would be rough but it would work out in the end. I just hope they fix the glitches first. I miss KQ and being able to run battledome without refresing my inventory so I can see if I got all my prizes or not. Still love TNT until until the end of time <3

Still love TNT until until the end of time <3 As people have brought up before, different departments handle different issues =P The artists who would be redrawing the clothes are not going to and should not be fixing the code for KeyQuest and the Battledome. It'd be like letting a sales representative go out and work powerlines at an electric company - just because they work for the same company doesn't mean they're interchangeable with one another ;D The artists working on the clothes won't at all affect the programmers hunting down and fixing game bugs.
Re: the pet itself - it's kinda cute, I'm mentally calling it an owlbear XP Does look very much like a petpet to me, but I suppose we'll find out! I, too, will be weeping for the artists if it is a pet. Those brave souls *salutes*

Might as well throw in my thoughts: Customisation: TNT have said in the past that if a new species was released, it would not be backwards compatible with any old clothing. Now do remember this just means clothing, backgrounds and trinkets can still be applied to it without any difficulty. As for what does this mean, I see 3 things happening:
1. TNT do as they say and no old clothing becomes available for it to wear. TNT are probably going to release plenty of new exclusive clothes for it to make up for that and of course any future clothes will be compatible (also being it was probably being planned early on some of the most recent "old" clothes are compatible with it as they were made when it was being created), but other then that TNT are just going to keep moving on.
2. While they're not going to make all clothes wearable on it, they'll probably make the most popular ones wearable on it. They also could take requests for clothes to be made wearable on it. Probably the best method to handle this, UNLESS...
3. I think it was last April Fools when JN's prank was a "species creator" that, since a completely new species wouldn't be compatible with older clothes, instead they let us mix and match Neopets body parts. The results were hilarious, but oddly enough the prank also presented a solution to this problem: if they keep the body type the same as another species they can just use that specie's code for wearables on it. It's probably THE best solution, and if that's what they did I say they did a pretty good job hiding that fact.
Appearance: Of course, this is all just about what clothing it'll wear, what about the Species itself? Well we all know one thing, it's species name will probably start with "V" to complete the species alphabet. But being serious, the main thing people need to remember about this new species is that it's coming into existence EIGHT YEARS after the last new species was introduced. That's a large span of time, and that's going to mean there's going to be some art evolution. Had TNT been creating new species between this span of time its different art style probably wouldn't be so apparent as the fictional species would have gone through the transitional art stages. But since they don't exist, the different art style is rather obvious. It does look like the art style used in Petpet Park now that I read people saying it look like the Oukin.
So what do I think? Being a Pokemon fan, I'm use to this kind of reaction of "the old art was better" and have gotten sick of it. Nowadays I base a creation not on its art style but rather on the art itself. This new species looks perfectly fine. It looks unique and not like any other species which is a good thing as it'll fill niches. It's an interesting combination of animals that don't have a Neopet species of yet: an Owl and Panda. Obviously TNT been watching Avatar: The Last Airbender, that or playing DnD and an Owl Bear encounter came up. Either way, it's original for Neopets and that's what it needs to be. It's cute and looks like a curious little guy, but at the same time those claws tell you that it's not someone who'll let you push around. And, much like the newer Pokemon, I'm sure over time it'll blend in with the other species as its given new clothes, Colours, and different art of it is drawn of it alongside other species. And I'm not the only one who thinks this, a lot of people on JN are comparing it to Delphox which too received negative backlash when revealed but since then it's been accepted (nowadays when you talk about Delphox's problems its with its movepool, but that has nothing to do with this).
What This Means: So, TNT said they'll never do another species yet here were are with another species coming soon. What does that exactly mean? To me, it means that a new era of Neopets has started. We all hoped that Neopets acquisition by JumpStart from Viacom would bring about some change and indeed said changes look to be happening. It was during the Viacom era when TNT kept saying no, mainly because I imagine Viacom put a tight budget restraint on TNT so they mainly focused heavily on the NC stuff to make money. Viacom cared only for the money, thus they only wanted Neopets to do things that'll make money. It's up to you to decide whether they were being an evil corporation hindering creativity or just being a business thus only caring about their main concern. In the end, it was pretty much Viacom telling them any extra effort should be put into the NC Mall to make more money. I guess I should also say this is my opinion of Neopet's relationship with Viacom, I have no proof of this though I'd like to point out that when the NC Mall came out TNT said this wouldn't impact free site content and, well, it did, hard. But back onto topic, Viacom era we weren't getting anywhere, but what about this new JumpStart era?
Considering the reason why JumpStart bought Neopets, I'm hoping that reason means they're going to let TNT do more things which they couldn't during Viacom's reign because they were focusing on making money. Don't get me wrong, TNT will still release plenty of NC stuff, but maybe not that much and instead putting some focus somewhere else. This new species is going to need plenty of new art so the art department is probably going to be plenty busy which means less to work on new NC clothes. That's less money they can possibly be making (the again, you could say this new species could sort of be an investment as people would now want to buy all sorts of new clothing for it, but that's not my point). TNT is showing us they want to start shaking things up and make Neopets exciting for everyone once again, not just to those who participate in NC. And also this is being done right off of a big transition that shut the site down for a few days and caused a ton of glitches, which means TNT aren't resting on their heels. No, they're raring to go and maybe we can start expecting big changes sooner rather then later (PLOTPLOTPLOTPLOT...).
But, What If I Honestly Don't Like The New Species?: Fine, you don't like it. I'd say you're not giving it a fair chance, but if there's something that really rubs you the wrong way about it then fine. However, if you're going to say you don't like it, I would kindly advise two things:
1. Do so in the way that doesn't discourage TNT from doing things like this. We want new species, we want new and exciting events and plots, we want TNT to start expanding beyond the NC sink hole. If you're just purely negative about something this will tell TNT this is not what we want and make them throw away options and that's something we don't want them to do.
2. Explain what about you don't like about the New Neopet. Is it the art style? What about the art style don't you like? What kind of art style would you rather see? Give examples by using other Species. It it the shape or the way TNT combined two animals together? Would you rather have a slimmer Neopet? Would you rather have had a pure Owl- or pure Panda-based species? Explain in detail your problem with the new species is so that TNT knows that's why you're rejecting it. On the flip side, mention things you LIKE about it. Because TNT wants to know what you like, and if you point out the traits you like about it in addition to what you don't like about it that helps TNT mold a better picture in their head what they could do next time.
For example, recently we had an even in the Lost Desert: Desert Diplomacy. It was a logic puzzle, something TNT hadn't done in a while and it came out as a mixed bag. Things were good, things were bad, you could tell TNT were sort of rusty and they were also trying to do new things on top of that. I wrote my opinion about the event where I voiced my complaints but I also voiced what I liked about the event. I said I liked that they were bringing back logic puzzles, they were using their famous characters, they were expanding upon Neopets lore, and I liked the whole setup where we were going out and investigating. However I felt the investigation was rather lackluster, the clues sometimes weren't clear what they meant, the famous characters really didn't do much, and I had a problem with how they did the prizes. I voiced the good and the bad about the event which was also encouraging.
It's okay not to like things, what's not okay is saying it in such a way that doesn't explain why and/or can be interpreted you not wanting them to do something new. TNT are humans, they can make mistakes and have their own personal tastes & bias. It's when we cooperate can we move ahead to a direction where everyone is happy and we get things done.

Pikachu, sorry to rain on your parade, but no company buys a property to "rescue" it from having to make money. XDDDD Jumpstart isn't Charlotte from Charlotte's Web, jumping in to save a pig from being eaten. Obviously this is still a marketing decision. And it's already established that Jumpstart thinks that Neopets can expand their demographic to something older. Yanno, basically transitioning the toddlers who like other Jumpstart properties into Neopets.
Now, is it possible that Jumpstart won't be as overly transparent in their money-making plans as Viacom was? Sure. Probably a good business strategy to not offput your audience. But don't fool yourself that we've suddenly transitioned into a make believe world where Neopets can pay for its servers and workers with candy and good feelings.

As I said, we'll still see plenty of NC stuff (and I wouldn't be surprised if TNT gave more perks to Premium, I think that was a question on the survey), I'm just saying that hopefully it won't be 90% NC stuff. Pretty much they don't need to be releasing new NC clothes everyday, and with them not doing that it frees up some staff to do other things they wouldn't normally be able to do.
