Dylan is coming along really well! He's not finished yet (still pieces to tidy, still hands and some facestuff to finalise), but I decided to do a silly little thing with some other stuff I've painted up until now! To examine my progress over these past few months, such as it is. I wanted to use Zazz as my main comparison but...he's actually pretty good for something painted mostly with a brush that was half the width of its face...and even the first goblin I painted still looks pretty similar in quality to Dylan. But oh well! Zazz: "You should really take better care of your hair." Dylan: "Yeah I'll keep that in mind when I'm trawling through dungeons, thanks." (major differences: Dylan actually has eyes- he's one of only two models I've painted eyes on with my new teeny brush. Also, plz appreciate that I managed to paint this belt buckle...which is black..and the rest of the belt is blue...and the black paint didn't stray anywhere it wasn't meant to and I'm Very Happy!) Goblins: "Rargh we are generic goblins! We're angry because we're the first things Thorn painted, so you guys look way better than us." Zazz: "I'd look better than you anyway- it's just like, science, or something." Dylan: >.> (gosh I love how this cloak/cape turned out.) Dylan: "Gonna clean up this dungeon a bit because I'm a considerate guy, and there are bits of dead things everywhere..." Zazz: "I know! Isn't it great? We're such a great team!" =D Dylan: "Please don't talk to me." (this goblin was the first mini I ever painted, and actually still looks really nice!) Dylan: "Who're you and what are you doing in this dungeon?" Nymmestra: "Nymmestra, and I'm here to serve as an example of a prepainted mini so you can compare yourselves and feel terrible that you don't have eyebrows or lips. Or eyes in his case." Zazz: "Ouch." (prepainted Sun Elf Mini, from the icons of the realms blind boxes. We use this mini for Nymmestra, a sun elf bladesinger DMPC in Ursh's campaign.) Dylan: "Wait since when do drow work with driders?" Zazz: "Oh man this is not at all my day." Drow Priestess: "Unworthy child! Also check out my kickass outfit, you wish you looked this cool." Zazz: "Yeah, it is pretty fantastic." (I didn't paint the drow priestess- she's a prepainted icons of the realms mini intended as a point of comparison, but she's a little too blurred here for that to work.) Dylan: "We've made an excellent new ally." Drider: "The wizard promised he'd teach me how to keep my hair shiny and fabulous." Zazz: "See Dylan? There are some sensible people in this world!" Dylan: "You're still not allowed to talk to me." (the drider is a Reaper Bones mini, which is less detailed than Wizkids Nolzur/Deep Cuts. But even with this in mind, I did a much better job painting the faces on Zazz and Dylan- the paint on the drider is layered on quite thick. Zazz was a couple thinner coats of two shades of grey, and Dylan is a couple thin coats of greys and browns so far (in person I swear the mini is a lot less grey than in these pics. >.>)) Vampire: *hisses evilly* Dylan: *spellcasts water-ily* Zazz: "We're just collecting so many friends in this dungeon!" =D Hearts: "I love your hair!" Zazz: "I love your sparkly magic fire!" Drider: "I love that the colour from your handheld items didn't create weird coloured patches on your hand..." Hearts: "There there, your shield is still pretty rad!" Hearts: "Oh no it's Drozzt. Quick, pretend we don't see him." Drozzt: "Hey guys!" =D Dylan: "WOW WHAT GREAT WEATHER WE ARE HAVING. IN THIS DUNGEON." Drider: "Yes I just love how...there's no sun! Yes!" Zazz: "And the mold and bloodstains really add to the atmosphere." Drozzt: =( ~fin~

Currently Planned Projects:
1. Dylan! I don't think he's far from completion. I was going to paint a little more yesterday before d&d, but I forgot...I had the paint and brushes out and everything, silly Thorn!
2. Astrophelle Alektos! I'll find out what colour her robes are (they'll be colours associated with the local temple she's currently staying at), and then get back to work on her.
(2.5. Maybe a hellhound, it depends. I might be painting one for my irl party's rogue as a surprise, or my brother might be doing that.)
3. After being so pleased with how the genasi turned out, I think I might actually paint Ursh after all. I want to watch a few more tutorials on highlighting and stuff before then but, while it's true this miniature was super expensive, I think I could produce a result I would be happy with. It would be nice to have a painted version of their mini to match the other characters. I need to replace a few paints first because I don't want to use super mucky old ones on this mini, but I'll get there at some stage. I also probably need a deeper green for their armour's primary colour, but thankfully the Warhammer store in town has alllll the colours.

Thanks to my tiny new brush, I touched up Zazz's mini with some EYES! (the sclera and iris are both yellow, so this works.) ft. also Dylan, whose skin tone I was in the middle of trying to fix. I think it's alright now, but will need to check again in better lighting (it was sunny when I took this, then I took a break to watch One Punch Man and now it's overcast and pouring.) There are way too many layers though so the features have kinda...disappeared...which isn't too awful because they always look kinda melty on these models anyway, but is a reminder to in future plan out what colours to use more clearly beforehand. (the bottom half of that bow isn't white. It's brown like the top half, this is just a Classically Bad Thornpic.)

I watched some of Painter's Guild today. I'm really enjoying it so far! It's why I was inspired to suddenly go and base coat Astrophelle, even though I don't know her final colour scheme yet (I need to ask her future-DM what the colours of the Temple of Sune are, since she's been working there most recently.) Anyway yeah Dylan: I tried to highlight the topmost strands of hair with a brighter shiny gold, to mixed results. Astrophelle is more in focus in this one than Dylan- check out her lovely shiny deep blue skin! I tried like twelve angles but apparently I just can't take pictures OH WELL he's done unless I decide to go touch up some small points later.

So I confirmed with her DM that Astrophelle's robes, which are from the Temple of Sune, should be in warm colours. Sune's temple are a lot more chill than some and don't have a uniform as such, but do tend towards warmer colours. Her outfit should have some really nice sunset tones when I'm done. The staff will be silver because it's a metal Thwacking Stick with warhammer stats. Haven't decided about the scroll cases yet. (starting as a level 2 paladin- protector aasimar- background not yet chosen and stats not yet rolled- 26 years old, 5'10", loves tea and dancing!)

Astrophelle Valentina Alektos (rough.) They look the same colour in this picture but the cape is more gold than the rest of her attire, which is gold-and-orange. They're actually different shades of gold too, with the outfit being shining gold, and the cloak having an extra few coats of auric armour gold over top of that. I'm happy with how the staff is turning out- it's silver, but the tip is glowing golden as she casts her magic from it (how many times can I say 'gold' in one small paragraph, yeesh.) The sparkles on her wings are of course wearing off over time (I painted those ages ago) but that's okay- I needed to fix up the face later anyway and am sure I can resparkle these things. EDIT: This picture is a little better at showing the current colours.

I discovered that the best time of day to take pictures is late morning. Since these photos I've fixed up her bottom hand, that's about it. The swirly bit on the top (bottom from this angle) of her staff is meant to have silver bits peeking through- I'm trying to make it look like it's glowing gold because she's channeling magic through it, but it's normally plain silver. EDIT: From nearer the end of the day; Astrophelle back-to-back with a tiefling I painted a few months back. Because why not?! The larger clump of paint at the bottom of her left wing is a bit of an issue...I accidentally dabbed it with gold and covered it over but in the process it lost the translucency, sigh. Tomorrow I'm going to try and define her lips. I've never done this on a model before, but especially when her skin is such a dark blue and flecked with distracting glitter, it can be hard to make out features and so I wanted to draw them out a little. I've read a few guides though, and am fairly confident I can do this as long as it's another sunny day.

Astrophelle has eyes! (and I colored her hair more yellow but it is too bright...and part of it didn't get covered...I'll get there! Plan to make the spell effect nicer as well, but will do that last.) I tried a small amount of highlighting too, and tomorrow I want to go talk to the Warhammer store about washes (I think Seraphim Sepia might be good, but they'll know better than me!) Blurblurblur Only slightly less blurblur (much harder to see her second eye- it's lower (because of the angle of her face) and nearer her hood, and also very slightly smaller but not enough for me to try fix it and inevitably ruin the whole thing.) Closer look at the pretty autumnal colours on her...coat thing? Robe? Eh, that thing. The coat-part, not the cloak.

Completed Astrophelle today and started on Xyniir! This was my progress as of about a half hour ago (all I've done since is start painting Xyniir's trousers.) I bought a really nice wash called 'Seraphim Sepia'! I think it definitely helped better define the different elements of this Blinding Gold attire. (I was going to brush the wash across the whole mini but the person in the store said to just paint it into the cracks, so I tried that instead.) Astrophelle being shiny and pretty from more angles!!! In the second one you can actually see both her eyes for once. I realised that how I picture her skin is like a blue dragcave Nebula dragon...crossed with a red dragcave nebula dragon...except the primary colour is very deep blue instead of black...veryshiny in any case! This is what I started with with Xyniir: a Nolzur's marvelous 'half-elf bard' from Wizkids. But she's not a bard, she's a treasure hunter, so I tried to make the instrument more of a weird...thing she could have found in some dusty old tomb, by cutting up the axe I cut off Zazz's mini months ago and sticking it on. You can see that in the image at the top of this page. Between the below image and that one I (very poorly) sanded some of the mold lines off, reprimed the relevant areas, and did a base coat in 'storm cloud grey' which is pretty similar to what I needed for her skin tone anyway.

Should probably take an updated picture of Xyniir...she's almost done! Yesterday I went back to the Warhammer store, and the owner remembered me again! They helped me find some nice greens for Ursh's main armour colour. I started work on Ursh today and...this is so nice to paint! So much more detailed than the Wizkids minis. This one is a custom from HeroForge. This is far from finished and the lighting today wasn't so good, but I am happy with how this is coming along so far and am soooo in love with this green! <3 I also have a Citadel shade and colour in shades of green the owner suggested to work well with my base colour, I love this store so much, such A Good. I debated making the material under their armour brown, because in the picture I commissioned where they were unarmored, Ursh was wearing brown. But I think black will look nicer and makes the green and (especially) the gold stand out more, so I'll stick with black. Their eyes are blue but the mini is way too tiny to paint irises, so I'll leave them white. Because of how prominent their brow is, you can't see the eyes from most angles. At most you'd get a glimpse of white, which is all you'd see looking at someone from a distance irl anyway.

It's been overcast and grey and Notgood for lighting, so I haven't done any super detailed work on Ursh yet- I'll even out their eyes when we get some sun and still need to tidy up little bits on the rest. But as long as they're passable for our game Sunday, I'm happy. I can keep working on them after of course, but will cool to finally have a painted version for a session! (This is with no shading or highlighting.) (ft. Dragonsword! Their cool magic shield is kindaaaa visible too, but I haven't painted the outside of that yet.) (I think the most fun detail to paint so far has been their ears. Look at the cute leetle pointy ear ahhh!)

Ursh remembers being left in a forest by orcs as a kiddo, and figured they look a bit different from other orcs because their mother is a goddess. Even so, they feel they're ugly in comparison to all the super hot, tusky orcs wandering about. Like, look at all these people! Gee wizz, they are so tall and stronk, it is overwhelming to a little adventurer who spent half their life isolated from other physical beings (they were raised by spirits in said forest.) (I did some more work on the mini today, although this is not a very good angle. I mostly took this photo for the above comment. =P) The black mark on the left of their face is just a shadow. Since the last picture I posted I painted the shield and axes and touched up the face a bit. I also painted their hair tie thingy, but it's not visible from this angle. It turned out really nice though! Such a tiny detail and it looks so good, so I'm happy with that.

(the one on the right has a tattoo of a pierced heart on its arm. A reminder that it used to be a person!) Painting some zombies for a session on Sunday! Ursh and the gang will be fighting a bunch of undead in an overridden town, aptly called Ghoulcrest. So I also got over-the-shoulder photos of Ursh on part of the wall which will be used to represent sections of the town during the session (along with the zombies!) (Ursh looks so goooooood, I want to cry with relief at how well this mini has turned out!) Dragonsword is the name of Ursh's sword. It's a +3 longsword which does extra radiant damage to undead and fiends, Ursh can project their voice with it as a bonus action, and it glows in the presence of dragons. They named it- do not blame my DM for the ridiculous name. =P It was retrieved from an underground dungeon, the same one from which Ursh accidentally released the demon which became the campaign's Big Bad....whoops. The Shield does not have a name, but it can be compelled to float in the air in front of Ursh with the command word 'yield!' The Armour is mechanically adamantine half-plate. Ursh bought it with the gold they won from an underground boxing ring... One of the axes is a +1 handaxe called Skullsplitter. It was gifted to Ursh by the leader of the local orcs (his name is 'Dee Folte'- you can blame my brother/DM for that one.) The second axe is a weaponised mimic friend Ursh has named Blork. The mini is a little outdated- Blork is now worn in a smaller form inside a magic hip-quiver.

Brain: Spent like six hours with EuroAtlantis, maybe I should do something not D&D for a- Heart: SKELETONS. Brain: Uh...? Heart: PAINT SKELETONS. SKELETONS FOR SUNDAY. PRETTY PAINTED SKELETONS TO FIGHTY FIGHTY. Brain: But we're grumpy like an overtired baby, got three hours sleep, we should really nap... Heart: PAINT SKELETONS. NOW. (and so...I shall nap later! One of these is an orc, which is so cool! Imma do the teeth either white or black so that's more obvious.) EDIT: Not good enough lighting now for pics, but I found out that if you use a little of the green wash, and then the sepia wash over top of that, you get a super cool aged bone look! I just wanted to define the individual ribs and such a bit more, but this looks awesome!

I never updated with my finished skeletons! =O My brother had them posed in a city set-up today, so I tracked some down... Vigilant, but not vigilant enough to actually see the invader behind them (the figures in the top middle, Nymmestra in bright gold on the left.) The undead are mine! Did not paint the barely visible dragon or the knight guy. Another terrible pic, but you can see how I did the spinal column more green and moldy on this guy!
