So I recently got myself set up with a new laptop given my other one has lasted me since 2010... it was about due.
A bit of research into getting Microsoft Office yielded the information that it’s no longer a single purchase and I would have to pay annually and... that ain’t happening sorry Microsoft!
Now, I’m quite used to MS Word and I use it to a pretty high degree in terms of its formatting capabilities. I know all the ins and outs like if you have a highlighted word and select it from right-to-left then when you type to replace it it’ll be non-highlighted, but if you selected it left-to-right your new word will retain the highlighting formatting. I know pretty exactly what to expect about which formatting characteristics will be present if I pop my cursor at the end of this word, and the end of that line, etc. Because often I use Word not just to type but to present. I write booklets and brochures and reports etc, etc.
Having made the start of an attempt to settle into Libre Office on my personal laptop (I’ll stick with MS Word at work, because they pay), I’m finding it incredibly frustrating. I mean, I know there’ll be little quirks to get used to, and there’s always going to be if you’re speaking two different dialects of word processing languages. But seriously... reverting all my bullets and numbering to a 12pt, serif font when there’s none of that literally anywhere in the document?! It’s quite frustrating.
So my questions are threefold:
1) Does anyone use Libre Office and have any comments on how it goes with formatting in the long run? Is it the sort of thing you can get used to?
2) Does anyone use anything other than Libre Office that they find to handle formatting reasonably?
3) (and this is a bit of a cop out because I could totally just look this up) Do people know if you can turn off the setting in Libre Office that turns almost all your apostrophes into accents? Cos that’s pretty jolly annoying that one!
