Heeeey nerds! We're doing this now.
What is "this?" Good question! So sometime ago there was talk about writers kind of being "left behind" in terms of exposure to people who aren't their immediate friends, then an idea came about for an event to rectify that! "This" is an event where, someone chooses a piece of their own writing, it gets put into a pool with the works of other people who participate in the event, then everyone reviews everyone else's writing (if the pool gets too large, I'll use rng/ordershuffling to assign writings!) Just send me stuff and I'll send it out.
Pretty simple, right? Kind of a modified warm fuzzies, but for writing! Isn't that wonderful! Now, here are a few things I should clarify about this process
1. You can submit anything that involves writing--ie, something a writer can critique meaningfully. There's not really a good line as to when something stops being writing, but if a prospective review would itself reasonably talking about visual composition (ie sounding a lot like a visual arts critic) more than your use of story or language, it probably isn't an amazing fit for this event. If you're in doubt, just ask.
2. What you submit has to be something you are proud of or otherwise notable. This sounds really super scary but it's really not--you don't have to submit your magnum opus or anything. It can be Teletubbies fanfiction or a rough draft of something you're passionate about for all I care--but the spirit of this rule is that you can't submit something that someone can outline the good and bad so that you can then turn around and say, "lol, I wasn't *really* taking this seriously so it doesn't matter amirite?" Also, it's just good manners: if you don't take your stuff seriously, why should anyone else?
3. Writers may submit little author's notes in case of known issues, fandom introductions, or otherwise.
4. Fanficition must be understandable to somebody with only basic knowledge of the franchise--enough so it fits into two 100-word paragraphs of information. This applies to any Neopets lore post-2014 as well.
5. The maximum amount of words reviewers are obliged to read is 15,000. This is one hour of reading at 250 wpm. You may submit longer pieces, and reviewers may read past that; however, they can ditch whenever they want and there's the understanding that there's no guarantee all of it will be read. In this spirit, if you do submit something that runs longer, try to put a cut on some sort of natural hopping-off point.
6. Writing may be hosted publicly or privately; do indicate this preference and we'll work something out if it's the latter.
7. Reviews shall be thoughtful. That is, reviewers should take into account what the work wants to do, how it comes off, and evaluate it how they deem appropriate. Think of it like writing a book report for English class, and note the good with the bad. If there's enough support for it, I might draw up basic questions people can draw upon for points.
8. "Circle" is part of the name, but you may review without submitting any writing. That said, you'll be subject to ranumgen and the obligations that submitters would share. You also may not submit without reviewing.
So yeah, if you want to sign up for this, do. If you don't, don't. You can probably exercise your radical freedom and do something else, but I don't know what it would be. I'm probably closing these sometime in August.
(I need technically two people for this to work.) Whoo boys can we get an F for exceeding this.
