These are already in my diary, but thought I'd post them in here too since most people are doing that, and some have had issues finding my character info!
Kohimu (core-HEE-moo)- player character
Kohimu, as drawn by Shinko! =D Thanks Shinko!
Te Tai (as written)- NPC
EDIT: I'll add in Kahu.
Kahu (KA-hoo)- NPC
Kohimu (core-HEE-moo)- player character
Species: Kohimu is a taniwha, an aquatic creature which serves as a guardian (kaitiaki) of particular people or places in Maori mythology (or sometimes eats them, y'know, either or.) He was a kaitiaki of people, but when the world no longer had a place for him, he had to relocate to Naelus.
Appearance: Kohimu is a lizard-like taniwha who likes nothing better than to splash about in the shallows at the shoreline! His body is long and flat, and dark brown in colour, resembling a block of driftwood (especially when he stays still.) Kohimu's eyes display the sparkling iridescent green-and-blue of paua shell, and entirely lack pupils. His head and body, but not his long tail, seem to be carved with repeating wave-like patterns, which flare in the same bright colours when he is particularly emotional.
(Wave-like patterns similar to these designs by NZ artist Matt Smiler. Without the ridges in between, just the general wave-patterns. On his chest just in front of his left foreleg, usually invisible since he moves flat against the ground, is a slightly different symbol- a fishhook motif, much like this one here.)
Kohimu is a full three metres long, with his tail accounting for half his length. Since his legs hold him flat against the ground, he is only 40cm tall from the ground to the top of his head (he's based visually on a native New Zealand reptile called a tuatara, which looks similar to a lizard.)
He has a few traits which are somewhat less lizard-like. For one, his snout is flattened and his mouth huge and toothy, his eyes larger and forward-facing. Kohimu also has a leathery fin either side of his head, and a fin extending down his back in place of a tuatara's spines. His feet are larger and webbed- he is not made for running, one could rather unkindly even compare his feet to a duck!
Personality: Kohimu is a laid-back, friendly sort of guy. He's easy to get along with- he'll make sure he gets your name, ask you about your interests, and has plenty of interesting tales to share. He likes to make others happy, because this in turn makes him feel good! However, the downside of this is that he'll pretend to be fine, even when he really isn't.

Te Tai (as written)- NPC
Species: Taniwha (deep-sea based). Kaitiaki as well, though he'd like you to think otherwise. As opposed to Kohimu, Te Tai was the guardian of a place.
Appearance: Te Tai is based heavily on taniwhasaurus. Over six metres long, he appears something like a giant eel, with flesh that looks (and feels) like uniformly light grey granite, speckles and all. His teeth are longer and his face somewhat more draconic than the inspirational picture, with the pronounced flaring nostrils of a dragon and the higher-set eyes, though gills either side of his neck also allow him to breathe underwater (unlike his companion, who can merely hold his breath for long periods of time.) Small creatures such as limpets and barnacles are frequently clustered across his form, but he doesn't seem to mind.
Te Tai's eyes are the same shimmering blue-and-green as Kohimu's, but he lacks the wave-like patterns carved into the former's skin.
Personality: Te Tai is less outgoing than Kohimu. Because of his size he can only approach the shore at high tide, and typically only does so to communicate with his friend. His thoughts on the island's other creatures range from merely a little impolite to downright rude- he only voices these around Kohimu, but nonetheless what interactions he does have with other creatures tend to be less than kind, at least from his end.* Te Tai doesn't talk a lot but, when he does, he enjoys complaining. Of a thoroughly melancholy disposition.
*If you want your character to have a background with this guy, we can work something out. He has more favourable thoughts about ones he actually considers friends!

Kahu (KA-hoo)- NPC
Species: Kuri (an extinct dog breed from New Zealand)
Appearance: Long furred black-and-white pelt, bushy tail. The breed itself looks like this GOOD taxidermy specimen, not the two very poor ones which are also out there (only, they had longer fur than any of these specimens, according to the encyclopedia I'm using.) She's middle-aged and pretty thin for a doggo.
Personality-ish stuff: Kahu is a storyteller and legend-keeper, in charge of memorising tales old and new and passing them on to the next generation. She's the leader of her little pack (there are three kuri packs scattered around the island- one in the woods as well, and one in between, ranging along the river.) She's one of those adult dogs who think they're wayyyyyy above leaping about about and having fun like the youngins, until the right incentive comes along.
