"Hey, Mochi?"
"Hnnnn? What is it?"
"D'you ever wonder what the Spirit looks like?"
"...I mean, sure, doesn't everybody?" *Laughs* "What the random, Beech?"
"I'm being serious! Nobody's seen the Spirit for real in generations. We got no idea where she lives or what she looks like."
"I mean... I guess if I lived for that long, I'd spend a lot of time sleeping too."
"Yeah, but with everything that's happening, don't you think she should come out soon? And help?"
"Maybe she's worried?"
"Worried? About what?"
"I dunno. But she must have a good reason for not letting anybody see her. The spirit is old and wise, she knows what she's doing. You gotta have trust."
"You're too trusting, Mochi."
"And you're a worrywart. Things'll work out, Beech. You'll see."
"...Well I'm not gonna hide. We gotta look out for each other if the spirit won't show herself. So, so I'm gonna make sure everybody sees me!"

So I was away during most of the time this was posted, so just now really got a look at it. This looks pretty interesting, and I think I'm in. I have a few character ideas.
Also, just a bit random. I have a cat named Mochi (and palico in monster hunter named Mochi)

“It isn’t the fact that animals are killing that’s scary. Killing happens all the time. I’ve killed- thylacines are predators, after all. We eat other animals. We gotta to stay alive. Eating plants doesn’t do anything for us. And we’re far from the only ones on Naelus who’re like that. The Spirit understands, of course. She brought us here so that we could survive, and she would never tell us we can’t eat. And the prey animals kill too- they kill predators in self-defense. It isn’t fun, but we know it’s not personal and nobody holds it against anyone else.
“No, it isn’t the killing that bothers everybody. It’s that the prey bodies aren’t getting ate. It’s that there’s no evidence the predators found dead was hunting. The killers just go crazy; they aren’t doing it for food, or to protect themselves. Something- or someone- is making them kill for no reason. And that violates the most sacred law of Naelus, the one that makes it safe when our old homes weren’t- the Law of Mercy.
“The other animals are starting to talk. They think that if the lawbreakers are hunting us, it’s no different than if a predator is hunting us- we gotta fight them to defend ourselves. But we don’t know who’s causing this. Who’s making everyone go crazy. Fighting back when a wolf or a bear- or a thylacine- is trying to eat you is easy. You know what you’re up against. The enemies here are invisible. They could be anybody. If you wanted to fight ‘em, you have to… to pick a target at random and hope you guess right.
“But at this point, I think folks is ready to try it. It’s better than doing nothing.”-Beech of the Coastal Thylacine Family

“Snappy? Snaaaaappy?”
“Zzzzzzzzzzzzz… Hnn? Whozzere?”
“Snappy, it’s me!”
“Oh, heya halfpint. ‘S been a while, what are you doing way up here in the highwinds?”
“I had to see that you were okay. There’s all sorts of weird rumors lately, Snappy, about people disappearing or going crazy.”
“Aw, you really do care! I’m flattered, Beech, didn’t think you swung for scales.”
“Quicksnap! I’m being serious!”
“Alright, alright, sorry. Seriously though, you worry way too much. I’m big and strong, and have you seen these jaws? Nobody with any common sense would try to get one over on me.”
“I guess… but what about those of us who aren’t lugging around enough teeth to make a shark jealous?”
“Hmm. I like to think the Spirit wouldn’t leave us drifting in the wind, y’know?”
“Mochi said the same thing. But nobody’s even seen the spirit in living memory.”
“True yeah- but who’s to say the spirit can’t help without showing herself, eh? Haven’t you heard the old stories of the Guardians?”
“The Guar- that’s silly, the Guardians are just a fable.”
“Beech, I had a jackalope for lunch yesterday. How about the benefit of the doubt?”
“...I guess. How’d the story go again?”
“Well supposedly, in Naelus’ greatest time of need, the Spirit will chose four worthy souls to be her champions. The first one chosen is the islander she judges to be the bravest; a real Lionheart. This Lionheart will protect the islanders from being killed.”
“Okay… I follow so far. I think the next one was… um… a fixer, right?”
“You’re thinkin’ of the Healer. Healer’s job is to find anybody who’s been poisoned by the negativity of the outside world and purify 'em.”
“Ah- that makes sense. ...I wish the Healer would heal people faster.”
“Well they gotta find the people who need healing, don’t they squirt?”
“Yeah, yeah… and it’s good that at least there’s somebody that can do it. I dunno what we’d do if there wasn’t.”
“Be in trouble, that’s what. Anyway, after the Healer is the guardian who is the wisest and most insightful- somebody with an Eagle Eye, that notices little things that hint something’s not quite right.”
“What does that mean? They know who the bad guys are?”
“No, but maybe they can figure it out.” *laughs* “You always want things the easy way, Beech, you’ve got no patience.”
“...I just want things back to the way they were is all.”
“Hey, chin up. We’ll get through this. My kind’s been here over ninety-million years. Naelus has lasted a long time, I’m sure it’ll get through this too.”
“Y-yeah… you’re right. I’m sorry.”
“S’okay, kiddo. And hey, I haven’t even told you about the last guardian yet.”
“Oh?”
“Yeah- they say somebody who really, really loves the Spirit, her foremost Devotee, will get a gift from the spirit herself. Something to help keep the darkness at bay.”
“What does… that mean?”
“I don’t really know. The stories talk about the Devotee least of all, even though they’ve got such a huge power. I guess that’s something we’ll find out eventually, hm?”
“I hope so, Snappy. We could really use the help right about now”

Mine might have a little bit of deer influence with the direction my mental image is going right now, but it probably won’t be the main inspiration.

Mine is more lizardy. But he likes the water, so that's something in common with a frog!

No frogs or deer here! well, maybe some frog genes, but pffff, I wouldn't worry about that, what problems could a little filler frog DNA cause? (Nah seriously, no frog or deer inspiration here! =) )

I have been working on trying to flesh out my characters, but it's a little difficult without having a good picture of what society looks like.
I suggest one or two sort of makeshift trading plazas, either keeping predators and prey separate, or having them put aside their differences to trade. Nothing too fancy, maybe fruits, wool, vegetable strings, or even digging services. What do you think?

Just putting it out there that there are not real "cities" on Naelus- their society is going to be very simple, and while they can engage in trade I'd rather avoid them building structures or making textiles or the like- especially seeing as most of them lack hands. They can prepare basic food, exchange services (such as a beaver collecting wood for a fire or a monkey fetching fruit from a high tree). But don't think of this as a society in the way we humans understand the term. This is less Equestria or Narnia and more... Warrior Cats or Silverwing.
And it's generally agreed that predators leave prey alone when they aren't hunting, and there are likely truce areas where hunting isn't allowed period (such as important watering holes). It's also possible some of the egg-laying species or fishing species could provide for meat eaters in exchange for them not eating prey species willy-nilly. Options abound. \ o /
