Birdy always has her house open for trick-or-treaters. Always. Even when she’s flailing around shouting about NaNoWriMo, or out exacting her revenge upon the poor unfortunate soul that dared decorate her home and tree with toilet paper, or when her treehouse is overrun by Pokemon.
Always.
So why, then, this year, is the house completely dark, and almost abandoned-looking?
You gaze upwards, wondering if something’s wrong. Maybe Birdy just decided not to do anything this year?
Well, there’s only one way to find out.
Climbing aboard the lift that dangles from a sturdy branch, you wait on the platform as it begins to rise into the air, stopping once it’s even with the deck.
Stepping onto the boards, you take a quick walk around the wrap-around deck, but see no signs of life anywhere. A cool breeze rustles the branches and few remaining leaves, and you debate leaving.
Then, however, you notice the note tacked to the door…
...Whose interest? Birdy’s? Someone else’s? This didn’t make sense...
On a whim, you try the doorknob.
...It’s unlocked.
Why would Birdy go out and about and leave her door unlocked?? ...Assuming she was out somewhere, and had forgotten to lock the door, and only thought she had, only to leave it unlocked as she went out into the vast world of trick-or-treat houses.
...Maybe she has candy stashed inside. Or something. Or, you could just turn and leave, since entering someone’s house without knocking first is rude - unless, of course, you’re in a video game. Then you can just enter and smash all the homeowner’s stuff and loot their closets and dressers and trunks and storage spaces for random objects that may or may not be helpful to you on your journey with no consequences revisited upon you whatsoever.
So, what’ll it be? Do the respectful thing and leave? Or will you take on the role of a video game character and enter Birdy’s unlocked house in search of swag?
Always.
