For all your OOC discussion needs! While planning, plotting, and other such stuff can take place behind the scenes, Huntress and I encourage everyone to use this thread for things that are meant to be shared openly. We're trying to keep OOC discussion on the forum rather than on Skype or Discord, because not everyone has those services and we don't want anyone to be left out. This includes things like discussion about the game, art, writing, and completed character profiles (if they haven't already been posted or if they're for additional NPCs). Basically, if it's interesting enough that people would want to see it and talk about it, please post it here! For those who haven't been following this event and are wondering what's going on, please read the opening post of this thread. All of the PC slots are taken, but anyone is welcome to join as an NPC, although if you're jumping in in the middle of the game then it's recommended to catch up with the story first. (Post summaries are your friend here.) The FAQ and Completed puzzle solutions are in the next post. The Wrighton-related art and writing people have made are in the post after that. FAQ General: Q: Can I join? A: If the game is still in progress by the time you see this, then yes! Anyone and everyone is welcome to join as an NPC. Concerning discussion of the game: Q: So what's the deal with talking about the game offsite? A: Please try to keep discussion about the game here in the OOC thread, rather than in offsite venues like Discord or Skype. There are several reasons for this, the main one being that neither Huntress nor I are able to follow any discussion that happens outside the forum. Note that this is only referring to group chat; if you want to plan something privately with one or two people, then go right ahead. Q: What about using services like Google Docs for organization/puzzle solving? A: As long as it's linked to in the OOC thread and it's readily available for all the players, go for it. Concerning making characters: Q: How fantastical can I make my characters? A: Please see this post for a detailed explanation. In brief, fantasy/science fiction elements are encouraged as long as they are played subtly. Wrighton: Strange Memory is a story where the layers of weirdness are slowly peeled away to reveal what's really happening, and supernatural elements in character design should reflect that as well. Q: Do I need to make a supernatural character? A: Not at all if you don't want to! Mundane characters are perfectly fine. Q: I have an idea for a character but I don't know if it will work. Can I pass it by you first? A: Go right ahead! Hunty and I are both willing to give feedback if you're uncertain about things. Q: What's this thing about "PCs are from Wrighton, NPCs aren't?" A: PCs definitely have to be from Wrighton for plot reasons. However, we've decided that NPCs can go either way - they can be natives to Wrighton, or people coming in from outside. Q: What's this thing about "People from Wrighton always come back and people not from there always leave?" A: That is a thing, but there's no set time frame. Wrightoners could take years or even generations to find their way back, but they always do eventually. Q: Where can I post a character profile? A: Right on this thread, if you want to make one. Hunty or I will link to it in the first post. Concerning gameplay Q: So, like, what does the gameplay actually look like? A: Wrighton is a cooperative game where everyone works together to solve puzzles and overcome challenges. There aren't character deaths unless you decide to write one yourself, and there isn't any particular "winner" per se, because everyone is on the same team. Puzzles will be released in various formats and once they're out, anyone can work on solving them.
Q: Even NPCs? A: Even NPCs.
Q: How long will the game run? A: Right now we're thinking 6-8 weeks but it's subject to change. It's probably more likely to run long than short, anyway.
Q: Will there be a sub-board? A: We'll make a sub-board if it becomes necessary. At the time of writing, there are only two threads: the game thread (all the chapters will be together in one thread) and this, the OOC chat thread. If it looks like we'll start needing additional threads on top of these, then we might make a sub-board.
Concerning the setting Q: Where is Wrighton? A: It isn't in any particular part of the world, but a description of the geography around the town is here, about halfway down ans here, final few paragraphs. Q: What does Wrighton look like? A: The first link in the above question also has a description of the town. Basically, it looks like a smallish town where you'd like to live. Q: When does the game take place? A: Vaguely present-ish. Anachronisms toward the past and future are both OK as long as they satisfy the "keep it subtle" rule above. Q: Can I make new locations that aren't on the town map? A: Absolutely. We encourage the players to do their own worldbuilding, and if they want to make a location we don't have listed, then they're free to do so. It might even get a spot on the map. PUZZLE SOLUTIONS Wrighton Tunnel MapWrighton Character KnowledgeBuzzy Messages and SquigglesWarning: Spoilers ahead! Blank, unsolved puzzles will be listed separately from their solutions when possible, to give people a chance to solve them on their own if they want to. However, some puzzles may also contain or imply spoilers for the game. Puzzles will be grouped by chapter to minimize possible spoilerage, but still proceed with caution! Chapter 1: At the start of the chapter, all PCs got fragments of a note PMed to them. The pieces were: Collecting all the pieces and putting them together revealed a coded message: The message is a standard letter-substitution cipher. Decoding the note reveals: I've implemented a mindprog so that people will regularly discover and rewrite this message using contemporary language and cipher, then forget it. It's a failsafe in case something goes wrong. Well, more wrong. If you're reading this and the dome has gone up, you need to believe me. You'll meet Scip1 soon. They're a bit alien even by our standards, but they're working in your best interests. You'll be in danger if I say any more, but you'll understand everything soon. I promise.
1: Unknown if it's a name or an acronym, so it could be SCIP.
Chapter 2: PCs woke up on rooftops around town, hearing beeping noises coming from different directions. They were provided with these maps: Grouping all the images together yielded: (props to Shinko ) Players then had to use triangulation to find the sources of the beeping. There ended up being two possible arrangements of sources. The canon sources were: The other possible arrangement will be left as an exercise for the reader. But wait, there's more! The players tracked down the sources of the beeping, and they found DOORS! Each door had a circular handle with a marking on it that had to be aligned with a marking on the door itself. Players were given the information: - Turning the Town Hall door handle one-quarter turn clockwise resulted in the Central Park door handle turning one-half turn.
- Turning the Library door handle one-quarter turn clockwise resulted in the Town Hall door handle turning one-quarter turn counterclockwise, and the Central Park door handle turning one-quarter turn clockwise.
- Turning the Central Park door handle one-quarter turn clockwise resulted in the Police station park door handle turning one-half turn, and the Library door handle turning one-quarter turn counterclockwise.
- Turning the Police station park door handle one-quarter turn clockwise resulted in the Town Hall door handle turning one-quarter turn clockwise.
- Turning more than one-quarter turn multiplied the effect.
- Turning any door handle counterclockwise resulted in the opposite set of effects.
- Handles turning as a result of another handle being turned did not cause even more handles to be turned (because that would result in madness!).
And furthermore, - The marking on the Town Hall door handle was facing upward
- The marking on the Library door handle was facing upward
- The marking on the Central Park door handle was facing downward
- The marking on the Police station park door handle was facing to the right.
There are many possible solutions. The simplest one found by a player is: (Well done Liou !) Turning the Police Station door handle one-quarter turn counterclockwise, and turning the Town Hall door handle one-quarter turn clockwise.
Chapter 3: No puzzles for Chapter 3? What a ripoff! Then again, most of what that one spoilery character said could probably count as riddles. Chapter 4: The characters go explore the tunnels, because obviously. And it looks like their cryptogram adventures aren't over yet! Coded messages found so far: Central Park team: "] Solution: There are certain constants to reality. Things that don't change, that are the same on all planes of existence. That's how someone tried to explain it to me once, in layman's terms. They used a lot of words that seemed way too long for such a simple idea. After seeing so many wondrous places, I think one of those constants must be cats. They show up everywhere, in all universes and realms, and they're always recognizable as the cats we know. Maybe they're just too stubborn to change. Library team: Solution: This whole voyage was the dream of a madman – literally. Traversing all of creation, driven by the desires of thousands of people, when you say it like that it does sound like a dream. It makes a certain sort of sense then that the same madman dreamt up a way to save us all. If that's really the right word for it.

Soooon. By the way Fraze, when you said the festival will be in the marketplace and at the park, Dunkin's ears pricked up in my head. You said one of his Favorite Words. "Park." The only words he likes better are "Work Time!" and "Bravy!" (Dutch for "Good Boy"- he was bred in the Netherlands and all his basic obedience commands are in Dutch. Or whatever the Wrighton equivalent is if the story doesn't take place in our universe earth. ^^ Fun fact, the most common countries for breeding K9 dogs are Germany, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands.)

Okay, I guess it's time for me to post a full character profile! Name: Itzel Romero Age: 18 Ethnicity: Latina Appearance/Art reference: (It's the portrait I posted before, but I like to have everything in one place) Bio/Backstory:Itzel's parents adopted her when she was a baby, so she has lived in Wrighton all her life (at least as far as she can remember), but even though she's grateful to have a loving family, she's never felt like she belonged in town. She recently turned 18 and is in her last year of highschool. Now that she’s technically an adult, she’s impatient to move somewhere else, or travel on her own. She really wants to see the world, and she especially wants to visit her birthplace, because she wants to find out if it would feel like home to her in the same way Wrighton feels like home to her parents and all the other natives. She also has a natural curiosity about her birth parents, but that's not her main concern. She started working odd jobs as young as she could, and has been saving up, but she can't afford to travel yet. She currently works part time at the burger place, but she's also up for mowing lawns or babysitting, or anything she can get. Her parents want her to enroll in college, but so far she's refused to even apply, because she feels like that would just tie her down to this town even further. Her parents don't understand her wanderlust and it's hard for them to see their baby want to leave so badly, but they wouldn't stop her. In her free time, she loves learning about other cultures, and daydreaming of all the places she'll go and all the adventures she'll have one day.

This is really cool, I love that he was bred in the Netherlands and knows his commands in Dutch! I'm curious though, as someone who speaks Dutch but really doesn't hang around people with dogs much, where did you hear the term "Bravy"? I'm honestly curious because I can't seem to find it in the dictionary so I'm wondering if it's spelled differently here. XD; I was wondering if it came from "braaf" (which does mean good or kind of courageous, and is used as a compliment/encouragement to dogs or children), in which case you might have spelled it like it's pronounced in expressions like "brave hond" (good dog) or possibly "braafjes" (an adjective meaning good manners/behavior)? I might also just never have heard of it because I'm not around dogs much, so take this with a grain of salt, it's not my first language. XD; Dunkin sounds like an awesome dog and deserves to hear his Favorite Words all day long!

And yeah, it looks like the first page has several words written the way they're pronounced ("Dik-By" instead of "dichtbij" for one) plus a couple in English or German so I wouldn't really trust it XD; (edit: and, uh, almost none of the words on the second list are Dutch actually. ) I'm afraid I don't know much about dog training, but I can try to translate or look things up if it would ever be useful. XD; (I'd say the most common praise term is "Goed zo!" but I don't know if there are stricter commands for more officially trained dogs.) Thank you for your response and I'm sorry for the trouble, this was just my curiosity always needing to check new information. XD;

Writing up a full character bio, when suddenly: Brain: Hey, what if she had this entirely other hobby that would significantly impact her lifestyle? Me: Hmm, I dunno if it's too late for that. And would that be adding too much onto her? Brain: Hey, I hear ya. But... What if? Me: .... I don't like that you're tempting me. Basically, I suddenly started toying with the idea of channeling some of my martial arts background into my character, but I don't know if that's something I actually want to do or not. And I have to finish this character profile some time xD

Guess I should go ahead and post my full character profile! Name: Elizabeth "Liz" Bishop Age: 24 Gender: Female Height: 5'8" (not including platform shoes)(all the better to eerily tower over you, my dear) Appearance: - Long, straight hair that reaches waist length, black enough to be dyed (but is it really? the mysteries never end~)
- Multiple piercings along both her ears, as well as a ring in her right nostril and a jewel above the left side of her mouth
- Deep brown eyes and pale skin, very few freckles
- Always wearing dark clothing and make up, seeing as she likes the goth style and all
Relationships:- Mother and father, both Wrighton natives as well, who will be out on vacation likely for most if not all of the rp's duration. They're definitely more of the picket fence suburban type, but they still support their daughter in her choice of style and interests (however confused they may get).
- Her pet rabbits, Geppetto and Pinocchio, brother and sister Holland mini lop rabbits that she bought at a stall in the market a couple years ago. Very small, but also very troublesome. Watch out, else they'll chew all your phone books and smother you looking for cuddles.
- Rowena Cruz (Mostly Harmless (flufflepuff) ), a good friend of Liz and fellow rabbit enthusiast.
- Anyone else who Liz may interact with as the game goes and build relationships with
BioBorn and raised in Wrighton, Liz has always felt a strong attachment not only to the town, but to the woods that lay next to her parents' house. The park trails running through it soon became mapped in her brain, and as she grew in age and curiosity, the deeper parts of the forest grew less frightening and more and more intriguing. She often fantasized about what may lay hidden inside the untamed woods, writing and sketching small stories or doodles, although she never ventured more than a few steps in due to fear of either the unknown or getting in trouble. Thoughts of the forest were so prevalent for her, though, that they still cross her mind as an adult.
As a teen, these forest sketches and doodles soon turned into figure drawings and clothing ideas. Liz developed a strong sense of self identity and, much to her parents' chagrin, took complete control of her appearance, donning dark clothing and whatever was new on the gothic scene. Much of her high school career was spent taking taking obscure or unrelated classes, never following one career path. She couldn't commit to just one subject, all she knew was that she was interested in the unknown. This trend carried over into her college career as well. After graduating high school, Liz was accepted to and started attending Wrighton College, but she could never settle on a major, and ultimately dropped out after two years.
Since then, she's taken up a number of small jobs around town, soon saving up enough to get her own apartment. After a particularly unpleasant time at her last company, however, she ended up fired and had to move in back with the folks to ease financial issues. She spent about a year unemployed after that before finally picking up a job as a janitor at the town's famed cathedral. Not the most glamorous or lucrative job, but she was ready to take anything at that point.
Liz has spent a year at the cathedral now and still lives with her parents, and though she gets along with them okay, being under the same roof all the time gets old very fast. At least she can be with her pet rabbits again, as well as be closer to the forest. Outside of work, she spends her time on the forest trails or in the park people watching. She still sketches, often taking note of whatever those that pass her by are wearing. She also likes to shop retail and find new ideas for outfits, having taken a great interest in fashion. She's unsure if she can turn this into a career, though, and still has little handle on her future. She also still takes a great interest in the unknown, often collecting spiritual or ritualistic items while learning about different religions, and putting on a couple rituals of her own. She doesn't follow any one belief system, but she still feels a spiritual connection when performing her personal rituals and takes a certain purpose from them.
She likes her alone time, but she's also not shy around strangers, often being prone to butting into conversations or being blunt even to those she just met. Due to her appearance and height, low voice, and bold behavior, she can often seem imposing, but once you've spent an outing or two with her, she becomes a much more approachable person. Nowadays she's mostly just around to chill and do her own thing.
