The young, small Baby Grarrl stared down the giant water slide, water rushing and flowing a million a miles. Or at least to Tyto, it might as well be. His little red legs trembled in hi blue swim trunks and two white stripes on the side, as a Baby Cybunny wearing a one-piece white bathing suit with colorful flowers and pink frill around the edges pushed him encouragily. Indigo smiled and nudged him closer. Tyto closed his eyes and shook his head. He just couldn’t do it, he just couldn’t stand-
“OOPS!” Indigo yelled out surprised as Tyto let out a loud scream as he went down the slide and into the water. It was a good thing he had on green floaties, she thought, or he might have gone under water!
Three other Baby pets and a mixture of many other different pets let out loud laughs as Tyto swam to his Papa’s arms and buried his face in his collar. Christmas, Nicky, and Gemenaie let out hearty laughs at the sight of the poor Baby Garrl, ignoring the disapproving stare from their older sister, Esther The one who laughed the hardest though, was Shasta, the Baby Ogrin He and Danby high-fived, from their yellow float rings with blue polka-dots. That was awesome!
Lucy, a Baby Kacheek, bit her lip and tried to stop laughing as her friend gave Tyto a sheepish smile. She slide down the slide with her yellow floatie keeping her afloat as she slide down the slide, laughing and yelling over the churning water. Heather, the mother of mot of the 44 pets who had come plus Aunt to several of the cousins who came, let out a tired sigh as she pinched the bridge of her nose. Why did she and Adrian, father of Tyto, Lucy, Danby, and Shasta , thought it was a good idea to bring ALL their kids and some of their cousin’s? The heat must have made her delirious. That was the only explanation.

Shasta paddled up to his father, who was busy wrapping Tyto in a towel, and asked, “Papa? D'you think we'll ever be able to swim in a real ocean? Me an' Danby wanna see some pirates!” Adrian blinked, rather taken aback by the question. “Well...” he said slowly, “I guess I've never really thought about it... we might be able to one day.” Shasta pleaded, “But I wanna go now! Y'know, while I'm still young.” Adrian laughed and ruffled his mane, “Shas, you're only two, you're in no danger of growing old any time soon. But maybe it's something to consider.” “What is?” Heather asked, swimming up to them. “Shasta was just talking about the possibility of going on vacation someday,” Adrian replied. “Hey, that's a great idea,” Heather smiled, “I'm sure the kids would love it.” Adrian regarded her, “Well...” he paused uncertainly, “I'm not sure we'd manage to juggle 48 kids on a trip anywhere, I have enough trouble with my four as it is. How many would we bring? And what would we tell the ones we had to leave behind?” Heather looked thoughtful for a minute. “I'm not sure,” she said, “But if we organise the details now, I'm sure I'll be able to work something out.” Adrian watched Lucy splashing and laughing with Indigo as he considered this. “I suppose it couldn't hurt to come up with a theoretical plan,” he said after a moment. He grinned and turned to Heather, “As long as it's warm; no Terror Mountain for me thank you very much!” Heather laughed, “My thoughts exactly. How about Mystery Island? I'm sure the kids would get a kick out of that.” Adrian nodded, “Good idea,” he said, “Why don't we go back to my place and see what we can set up.”

They all gathered and squeezed into the tiny cramped space all 48 pets, plus the cousins. Tyto, Vanessa ran upstairs to his room which he shared with all his siblings. Nicky and Chritmas were guided gently up the stairs by their older sister , since both of them happened to be blind. Nicky flapped a paw and muttering under her breath, “No vacation, No vacation’ over and over again. Adrian watched over the hectic scene anxiously, unsure of what to do. He never had to deal with this many pets before!
Heather coughed, cleared her throat, and yelled. “Attention!” Everyone immediately stopped talking and turned their heads to the dark, brunette hair girl, with her hair tied back in a ponytail. Adrian stared amazed at her with surprise and admiration. “You gotta teach me that sometime.” Heather just shrugged and smiled. “Comes with the job when you are the parent and the Aunt of over 31 pets” Adrian smiled and nodded. That was true.
“Well what I was about to say is we’re all going to be taking a vacation to Mystery Island! Adrian and I talked it over, and we are going to the cabin we go to every year for our summer vacation! It’s very large, as you remembered, so everyone can come! Doesn’t that sound like fun?” All the pets let out loud and excited cheers at the news. A vacation! Ye! There was only one problem though. What about her pets with disabilities? he would have to figure something out.

From the corner of his eye, Adrian spotted one of Heather's Xweetoks, Nicky, sitting by herself in a corner, flapping her paws anxiously and murmuring, “No vacation, no vacation,” over and over. No one was quite sure what was wrong with Nicky, but she only spoke in fragmented sentences, never engaged any of her siblings in interactive play, and hated any alteration to her rigid routines. She was also blind, like her sister Christmas, a ghost Xweetok whom Adrian had met several months earlier. Peering down at the sea of pets from the stair railing on the landing, Tyto glanced uneasily at Vanessa. “Did'j'a hear that?” He asked, “They're makin' us go to Mystery Island. I don't wanna go there, Shasta tol' me there's spirits that live in the forest, I don't wanna meet one of them! 'Sides, what are we gonna do if the volcano 'splodes? I don't think this is such a good idea.” Vanessa nodded nervously, “Yeah, I've never been on vacation before, what if we get lost?” She huddled closer to him, and Tyto put an arm around her shoulders. “There's gotta be somethin' we can do to stop it,” he said determinedly. Downstairs, Heather and Adrian were doing their best to field the bombardment of questions being thrown at them, while Heather simultaneously attempted to control Nicky's panic-stricken reaction, which involved a lot of rocking, crying, and the repetition of the phrase, “No go, no go, no go, no!!” “Mom,” Kyrraie and Lirril, two of Heather's Xweetoks approached, pushing their way through the crowd. Heather looked flustered as she tried to hold Nicky down, applying pressure to her shoulders and chest in an effort to soothe her. “What is it?” She asked shortly. Lirril and Kyrraie glanced at each other; it wasn't often they saw their mother overwhelmed. “Well, we were just going to offer to keep an eye on Nicky and the babies during the trip,” Lirril said offhandedly, “You look like you could use the help. We could keep an eye on Adrian's kids too if he wants.” Heather looked slightly relieved as she struggled to contain the squirming Nicky. “Thank you girls,” she said, “That's a very generous offer. I might just take you up on it.” Adrian, who stood next to Heather, surveying the crowd for his babies, who had been swallowed up by the mass of pets, glanced down at his friend. “If your girls are willing, I'm sure I wouldn't mind handing off the troublesome four for a day or two while we're on this trip. You can tell them they'll be well reimbursed for their effort,” he smiled. Heather chuckled, “Oh I'm sure they'd be delighted to help knowing there are neopoints involved.”

I might just take you up on it. Just as long as your older sisters are helping you.” The 9 year old Island and Purple both nodded and rolled their eyes. They had a feeling their mother was going to say that. Adrian, who stood next to Heather, surveying the crowd for his babies, who had been swallowed up by the mass of pets, glanced down at his friend. “If your girls are willing, I'm sure I wouldn't mind handing off the troublesome four for a day or two while we're on this trip. You can tell them they'll be well reimbursed for their effort,” he smiled. Heather chuckled, “Oh I'm sure they'd be delighted to help knowing there are neopoints involved.” ~******~ So everything was set and ready two weeks later as the large assortment of pets boarded the boat heading to Mystery Island, much to the surprise and shock of the passengers. Everyone seemed to be doing well, even Nicky, except Tyto and Vanessa, who were in their own little corner, pouting.
“I can’t believe our plan failed. I don’t wanna go on no stupid vacation” Vanessa said, her arms crossed and bottom lip trembling. Tyto patted her shoulder affectionately and glared at the sight ofall the happy pets milling around. “There’s gotta be some way to stop ‘em. We’re not gonna get caught by any evil spirts” Vanessa large yellow eyes widen and glisten as she whispered her plan to Tyto, who nodded and grinned. It was perfect! The boat finally docked a few hours later, as all the pets and two hassled grown-ups hurried off the ship and onto the brown wooden planks of the dock. All expect for two mischievous pets, who went unnoticed in the crowd. Tyto smiled and beckoned Vanessa closer He whispered in her ear. “Ready?” She smiled and nodded. “Ready.”

It was a bright sunny day in Neopia as I dusted around the corners and shelves of the nursery. I was going to continue my house-keeping as long as I could before my four little ones woke from their naps on the floor, when who should come calling but my old friend Heather. I could see she had brought Indigo, Chirban, Haizeil, Dee-Dee, Myziko and Flekno, along with Ester, Lily, Anita, and Lucas, some of her older pets as I let them in. It still baffled me how she could handle babies, almost-teenagers, AND teenagers at the same time. She could do some pretty amazing things sometimes. My little Baby Shoyru and Ogrin groggily woke up as they saw the usual assortment of large pets they had grown used to. Hazeil, seeing Danby wide awake, bounded over to him and gave him a big hug. He blinked in surprise and shock before his face went beet-red. He smiled shakily as sweat came down his forehead. Shasta, Lucy, and Tyto both saw this and began to laugh. “Danby likes Haizeil, Danby likes Haizeil!”they chanted as they all fell over laughing, but not before their own little crushes were going to be revealed. Shasta was about to start another taunt when a pair of Acara arms wrapped him in a big hug. Flekno smiled and squeezed Shasta tighter, who’s own face was beet red with embarrassment. Lucy giggled and hide her face behind her blanket as Chirban and Myziko approached. But no one was as nervous or shy as Tyto when Dee-Dee approached him smiling and talking a mile-a-minute. He fumbled with his hands and wrapped his tail around himself as he blushed and nervously tried to come up with something to say. It was quite a sight. I sighed and shook my head.”They grow up so fast. It’s actually pretty cute.” “Yeah” Heather smilded and nodded. “It is.”

Without anyone noticing, she slipped round the back of the large crowd and made her way back to the dock where the ship was anchored. Padding up the beach, she stared at the ocean water and grimaced at what she was about to do. Dipping in one paw, she shuddered. She hated water; it was cold and wet, and her fur stayed damp for hours. Still, if it meant getting back on that stupid boat and going home, well.... Vanessa waded slowly into the water, stopping just as her feet lost contact with the ground, then she started flailing. “Help!” She cried, thrashing about and attracting as much attention to herself as possible, “Help! Somebody! Heeeeeelp!” Tyto for his part, ran up and yanked urgently on his father's trouser leg. “Papa come quick!” He cried, “Vanessa fell in the ocean!” Adrian and Heather both looked down at him quickly. “What?!” Adrian demanded. Tyto pointed in the direction of the beach and his father and his friend hurried off. He followed close behind. “Mommy!” Vanessa cried as she saw Heather approach, “Mommy help!” Heather waded into the water without removing her shoes and scooped up her baby. Vanessa clung to her shirt, pretending to be terrified as she trembled, more from cold than fear. Living in a house full of older pets, Vanessa had become a master at using her youth, and age-expected outbursts of emotion to get what she needed. Now she brought to her eyes the tears that had always served so well in the past. “I wanna go home!” She wailed, burying her face in her mother's shirt, “I don't wanna stay here!” While Heather was attempting to comfort her apparently distraught daughter, Tyto looked up at his father with what he hoped was an expression of fear, “Papa,” he said adamantly, “We can't stay here, it's too dangerous, Vanessa could'a been hurt bad, we gotta get outta here 'fore one of the rest of us falls in the water.” Adrian knelt down and scooped up his son, propping him up in his arms. “Don't be scared baby,” he smiled, “Nothing's going to happen to any of you, you're all perfectly safe here. Heather and I will always be around to keep an eye on you, and some of Heather's girls have volunteered to keep a lookout as well, everything will be fine, I promise.” Tyto stared at his father, real tears of fear coming to his eyes now. “But what if it's not?” He asked desperately, “What if - what if Shasta or Uchida or one of them other brave kids wanders off an' gets eaten by a forest spirit?” Adrian blinked. “A what?” He asked. “A forest spirit,” Tyto repeated, “Shasta tol' me 'bout 'em. They live in the forests of Mystery Island an' take you from the forests when no one's lookin' an' you never escape.” Adrian rolled his eyes and smiled exasperatedly. “Tyto,” he said, hugging his son, “Shasta doesn't know what he's talking about. There's no such thing as forest spirits, the woods on Mystery Island are not haunted, and nothing is going to attack you if you walk through them.” Tyto scowled, confused, “But Shasta said – ” “Never mind what Shasta said,” Adrian interrupted, “He was just making up that story to scare you, I promise the woods are perfectly safe.” He looked at Tyto. “Have I ever lied to you before?” He asked. Tyto sighed and shook his head, “I guess not,” he replied. “So – so there's really no such thing as forest spirits?” He asked, rubbing his damp eyes with the back of his hand. “Nope,” Adrian smiled. “Come on, let's go find Heather and Vanessa and tell them the good news. I have a feeling Vanessa will be relieved to hear there are no forest spirits around as well,” he smiled slightly at Tyto, an expression on his face that suggested he saw right through their earlier deception. Tyto blushed, looking sheepish, “Okay,” he said, “Let's go find 'em.”

Veena: I feel the soft cold grass against my fur as I slowly try to raise my purple Eevee head from the ground. Wait? What?! Eeevee head?! But I'm supposed to be a 14 year old girl with brown hair! What is going on? What is…. what is happen-happening. Oh my head. It feel like a million hammers are pounded against my skull and I have an aching pain in my chest. How did I become an Eeevee? I try to search my memory, but it is completely blank. Nothing is coming to my mind. My memory is totally gone. The only thing I know is that I'm supposed to be human and the three other Eeevees around me are human too. And they are my friends. That is all I know as I collapse on the ground and back into blackness Ethan: I know somewhat what happened. I don't know why, or what it is, but I know we are under some kind of ancient curse that only lets us be human for four hours, and Eeevee's the rest of the time. I am blue, an Eeevee just like the others. My love, or should I say my secret love, Heiwa, a white Eeeve with angel wings, is sleeping right beside me. My face darkens five shades of red as she moves closer to me. But I am too tired to move. Everything takes so much effort as I struggle to stay awake and above the murky thoughts. Can I? Aaron: It all came as a bright flash of light, just a bright flash. Then we all were Eeevee's. Just like that. I don't remember much, but I was the smartest of the group, more brighter than Ethan or the others would think, even if I'm a green Eeevee now. But I always hide the fact I was so knowledgeable, afraid of others judgment and ridicule. I would need all my strength and knowledge to figure out this curse. I will figure out what happened and why are memories are almost wiped clean. I will. Heiwa: Heiwa. It means peace in Japanese. My parents, whoever they are, picked that named especially for me because I looked so peacefull and come as a baby. It really would go on with my personality later on in life as I became older, always trying to keep the peace and help others. I know I will have to hold our group together. We are the only family we have. I sigh and cuddled closer to Ethan. I'm too tired to think, to tired to be responsible. I'll think of something…. in the morning. This is just a story I wanted you to see. Hope you like it!

Heather and I sat down on the sofa to watch, and I saw Indigo approach Lucy. “Hey,” she said, smiling, “You wanna play Usukis with me?” Lucy glanced uncertainly from her friend to the boys, who were eyeing each other up, as if trying to determine which of them would get to play with Lucy first. Lucy wrung her tail through her paws nervously, “Well, I-I was gonna play ball with Chirban an' Myziko, but-but you can play too if you want.” Indigo blinked, looking slightly hurt, “But we always play Usukis when I come over,” she said. Lucy glanced back at the boys, “I know,” she replied, “I just thought... well, it might be nice to try somethin' different for a change. You wanna play with us?” Indigo's ears twitched with barely contained frustration, “No thanks,” she said shortly, “I'll just go play by myself. Come find me when you're done playin' with my dumb ol' brothers.” Lucy watched her go, evidently confused. Shrugging it off, she turned back to Chiriban, who had fished one of Shasta's rubber balls out of the toy basket and stood bouncing it on the carpet. “You ready?” He asked. Lucy smiled and backed up. “Watch how far I can throw it!” Chiriban cried, lobbing the ball across the room. It bounced off the wall, narrowly avoiding knocking over a lamp, and Myziko scoffed. “I can do it better,” he said, “Watch this Lucy!” He ran across the room and returned with the ball, heaving it as hard as he could. It bounced into the hall, and the three kids ran off after it. I glanced at Heather, who smiled back at me. “It looks like the competition to see who gets the pretty girl is already under way,” I chuckled, shaking my head at the idea of kids so young competing with each other to win the right of courtship. They were all too young to even know what the word 'courtship' meant.

Lucas smiled and let out another laugh. “Never thought they would start so young. Most of them are still in diapers. I think they are a little young though. But I guess love has no age.” Heather smirked and gave her son a nudge. “Wise words coming from my “all grown-up” son. I know you, Esther, Lily, and Anita have some expiernce in the love department.” “Mom!” they all cried, horrified, embarrassed their secrets had been revealed. How could their mother say something like that? Heather only smiled harder and shook her head as her eldest pets blushed and looked at the ground. She knew they had their own little romances themselves. In the corner, Shasta was trying to impress Flekno by doing a handstand and trying to do cart wheels. She let out a laugh and giggle as she helped him up, making him laugh and blush harder at their paws touching. Heather and I both gave each other bewildered looks. We both had a feeling, deep down, that Flekno and Shasta would end up married someday. We felt the same for Danby, who was blushing as Haizeil snuggled closer on the couch as they both looked at a picture book. But Tyto seemed to have the most trouble. He couldn’t seem to say one word to the beautiful Baby Uni who made his heart thump loudly in his chest and his face turn five shades darker. It appeared she didn’t notice and only liked him as a friend, sadly. It seemed like this would go on into the future too. Indigo sat by herself in a corner and pouted. Why did Lucy and her sister like boys anyways? They were so gross! She should know, having to put up with her brother’s and cousin’s on a daily basis. None of them were like Handsome Hanso, according to her as she tried to tell this to Lucy, who ignored her and watched the boys. I let out a laugh and went over to help Tyto. Poor little guy was having his first crush, and he needed someone to talk too.

“Hey baby,” I smiled as I approached. He was sitting on the floor absently fingering a piece from the baby Lupe puzzle he and Dee-Dee were trying to put together, looking rather distracted as he waited for Dee-Dee to make her move. He looked up at me as I walked up, his face betraying his confusion and discomfort with the situation he was in. “Why don't we go over here and talk for a minute,” I said, picking him up. I looked at Dee-Dee, who was still focused on the puzzle, “Tyto and I will be right back, then you two can keep playing,” I told her. “Okay,” Dee-Dee said, not looking up as she put in her next piece. I brought Tyto back to the sofa where Heather still sat and perched him on my lap. I smiled softly and said, “You seem a little put out, what's the matter?” Tyto regarded me solemnly for a minute, then sighed. “I dunno,” he confessed, “I think I'm sick; I have this weird feeling in my tummy an' my face keeps gettin' all hot, an' my words aren't comin' out straight... at least when I try to talk to Dee-Dee. What's wrong with me?” Heather chuckled and I glanced at her, “You want to field this one?” I asked. “It's nothing serious Tyto, you have a very common condition, it's called a crush, and it's perfectly harmless,” she said. Tyto's eyes widened, “What's a crush?” He asked, looking intrigued and nervous at the same time. Heather smiled, “You feel like this because you like Dee-Dee.” Tyto blinked, confused. “You know,” Heather tried again, “You like like her.” Tyto's eyes widened in horror, and Heather and I both laughed at his revolted expression. He grimaced, “No way! I could never like a girl like that! Girls are icky, an' they like pink an' fluffy stuff!” I smiled and shrugged offhandedly, “Well, the symptoms are all there, they're unique to your experience, whether you like it or not, it appears you like Dee-Dee.” Tyto sighed, resigned. He looked at me, “Okay, so what do I do now? How do I get her to like me back?” I glanced at Heather again. She'd know how to answer that better than me.

“Just be yourself. Dee-Dee is very friendly, and even if she doesn’t like, like you, you can still be friends. I bet she’d like that.†Heather smiled and patted him on the head. “Go get ‘er, Tyto..â€
Tyto did just that, babbling and fingering his Lupe puzzle piece. Dee-Dee just giggled, thinking Tyto was funny and cute, but she thought of him as a friend. One day she would understand. They all would. And we would be prepared for it.

His gaze pierced right into my very soul as I opened the door to Heather and random assemble of pets. Not the first thought I would have had in my mind as I let in the jumble of pets. But two special ones really stuck in my head. A Shadow Xweetok, with the haunting gaze, stared up at me solemnly, clutching Nicky, a blind Snow Xweetok’s hand. She was different from the others, speaking in fragmented sentences and flapping her free paw and staring aimlessly into space. I smiled gently at the two and tried to lead them to the nursery. The Shadow Xweetok just gave me a hard stare and walked past, clutching Nicky’s paw tightly. I stared at Heather, confused.
“Don’t mind him. Lokhart’s always like that. He’s only really close to Anita and Nicky.” Jay, a 8 year old Snow Ixi replied, tossing a ball to Uchiha, a 9 year old Biscuit Kougra. I nodded, intrigued. I wanted to learn more about this mysterious Xweetok….
~******~
Heather and I were sipping tea as the kids ran around, screaming and yelling their heads off. I sighed and sipped my Borovan. I was still wondering about Lokhart. Nicky appeared so calm and quiet by him. It was actually pretty incredible. Usually Nicky never talked or interacted with anybody, but she seemed somewhat interested in what he was saying and whispering to her.
Heather saw me staring and gave me a curious look. “What is wrong, Adrian? You seemed concerned about something.” I sipped my Borovan and glanced at Lokhart and Nicky again. “Why is Lokhart so…. so…. so dark and unhappy? I’m surprised Nicky has taken to him so well. “You and me both, Adrian. You and me both.”

Suddenly we heard a dreadful scream from the next room. Heather and I glanced at each other as we stood up quickly. We both recognised that voice; Nicky. When we got to the nursery, Nicky was having a meltdown, screeching as she clamped her paws over her ears and rocked back and forth, shaking her head vehemently and repeating the same phrase over and over again, “That wasn't a very nice thing to do Bertram, that wasn't very nice at all!” I looked at Heather, who made to intercept her daughter. She answered my unspoken question, “It's from her favourite book, The Hungry Techo, we've read it so many times even I have it memorised!” She turned back toward Nicky, but stopped short when she saw that Lokhart had beaten her to it. I watched them both as I edged my way around the room to my baby Ogrin, Shasta. He sat staring at Nicky uneasily, kneading his forepaws into the carpet with uncertainty. “Shas,” I murmured, “What happened here?” Shasta glanced at me and shrugged. “I dunno, Uchida threw his ball to Jay, an' Jay missed it. It hit Nicky in the head, an' she freaked out. It di'n't even hit 'er that hard, I dunno why she's bein' such a baby.” I nudged Shasta with my foot, “C'mon Shas, be nice, you know she can't help it.” I turned back to watch the scene unfold, and regarded Lokhart curiously as he wrapped his arms firmly around Nicky and murmured something into one of the ears she held covered. Reading his lips, I could make out bits and pieces of what he was saying. “Come out of there Nicky, it's dark and scary, and you don't want to be there. You don't have to stay there Nicky, you're free. We both are. Please come out.” I watched in amazement as slowly Nicky stopped rocking. Her screeching petered out, and her sightless gaze landed on Lokhart. “Free,” she barely whispered, “Lokhart free.” Lokhart nodded sadly, “Yes,” he murmured, grasping her flapping paw in his. “Lokhart's free. And Nicky is too.” Edging my way back to Heather, I glanced at her. “You never did tell me why Lokhart's so... different,” I said.
