My productivity for the day. Quick little Tom doodle, because once he showed up in that dress, I couldn't not draw it x3 Bonus points if you can guess which episode this is from.

Last night I sketched a number of Jonathons, spurned by this first little doodle (let's just say that Birdy kept sticking things on his head for various reasons during a chat, and I had to show her how he felt about it) Some faces here were requested, namely "stepping into a puddle with socks on", "accidentally walking over a Lego", "hitting your funny bone", and "his feelings towards the requests we're making."

Eyy, check out that triple post >w> Y'know, I will always have at least twice as many sketches and unfinished wip's than actually finished pieces, always always always. Here's a couple, mostly recent with an oldie or two, to hopefully better remind myself to maybe return to this stuff later. This came about when I realized one day that Sobble is actually Jonathon reimagined as a Pokemon. Starts out baby, goes through embarrassing emo phase, and then grows up tall and lanky but with some echoes of his teen fashion (but still baby inside). And this one was supposed to be like a one panel gag thing inspired by one of Neopet's infamous down times. I wanted to draw Cherry crying with everyone around her begging to cheer up, else the site will go down (she's a red pteri after all), but I never finished it because I didn't want to think of poses for everyone xD Meanwhile this one is an entire comic, whose idea I got of course while doing dailies. I actually got a couple other Mystery Island comic ideas I don't have sketched out yet, so perhaps down the line there'll be a mini vacation arc >w>

I attempted to draw Hiccup in his sequel form for the first time. His first movie design is so simple, so when I started on this I kept doing double takes at my references going, " There's so much detail?? I've drawn so much already, but there's still even more to be done???" As overwhelming as it was, though, I still feel like these turned out pretty well for first tries xD Kudos to anyone who cosplays this design or has regularly made fanart for it.

Finally had a moment to start on this, though I'm no where near finished. Still, I figure I better show my progress, or else people will start to wonder if I forgot. Caylista Voxna and Demiex have a mope off! No one is winning. Having trouble getting Dem's sort of dead-eyed look, and I think I want to reposition both figures so they're more droopy, Dem in particular is standing up too straight. I'm proud of the way I noticed his shoulders in the reference, though, the way they slope down so much gives a good effect. Voxna's floofy hair is fun, and I like the shape of her jacket. Main ears might be too perky on her. Dropped ice cream is something to mope about, though currently it's not at ground level, so that's kind of weird. I was too lazy to expand the canvas at the time. Might be too sketchy for much critique, and I've already come up with some of my own notes, but if anyone has something to add, I'll listen. I'm not sure when I'll have time to work on it again, but it won't be at least for another day, maybe a week, so now's the time. I guess my biggest concern is that it reflects Caylista's characters, and that it also looks like it's telling a story, albeit a simple one that they're both moping about something because they're like that.

June Scarlet as someone who has spent waaaay too long staring at caylista's ocs, i can tell you that voxna seems accurate enough to me, she's definitely very expressive so her facial expression is all well and good. she does strike me as a more "graceful" character and i buy her moping over spilled ice cream and having a more "lively" pose, haha. i think her ears look good, they're sloped down normally--though if you want to accentuate the sadness, you can definitely make them a bit droopier if you want! with demiex... i think he definitely does look more "sad" than dead-eyed/apathetic. part of it is that maybe his facial features are too sloped and his attention too focused on the ice cream. i think one part that makes a dead-eyed expression is that it's almost-neutral and has this "zoned out" quality--like, maybe that you're not *really* in the present moment, which visually manifests in a look that maybe has lowered eyelids and doesn't perfectly map onto any one object, almost like you're looking past it, really. fits with this context, too, because even if demiex is upset about ice cream, i think he'd generally look dead-eyed anyways, and it's perfectly fine to have ambiguity re: whether he's upset about the ice cream or annoyed at vox. (and i know i spent this big old paragraph just describing ONE THING but you said you wanted feedback on characters and i take waaaay too long to try saying anything helpful with fairly tangential elaboration, sorry! i think it's good overall but, as, you said, the "dead-eyed" look needs some work.)

Moni It's a lot of fun going down the rabbithole (cybunnyhole?) of Caylista's characters. I might try changing the ears, seeing if they do better droopier, and then undo and keep the ones I have. Yeah, I think part of the trouble I'm having is having the eyes not focused on anything. At one point, they were too far apart and he was looking in two different directions. It was funny, but not what I was going for. I'm glad you mentioned the word "apathetic" though, because I think that helps me get in the right mindset for him. He's not really sad so much as done. Sad has slopey lines, while done has more horizontal straight lines. Kind of in the sarcasm category, though with that I have them looking away, as if they just finished rolling their eyes (since the actual eye rolling doesn't translate well into my art style). Thanks for the feedback, it was helpful!

Back at it again, working on my art trade. Ending up starting from scratch. I still am concerned that it holds true to the characters. I am also concerned about color now. I really like Voxna's jacket in her second pose along the bottom, I like the shape and such. i.imgur.com/FuvbMed.jpgBut I'm concerned that it's a bit too dark to pick out from her hair in my piece. Do you think it'd be okay to change the jacket color slightly to a lighter black so that it's easier to pick apart the two? Generally I just stick to the color exactly in situations like these, but I'm wondering if that's for the best here. I think my second Demiex is improved, though I'm not sure if I've captured him yet or not. And I'm not sure if my Voxna is improved or not at all, I rather liked the first version a lot, and I'm not actually sure this captures her quite as well. So yeah, definitely looking for feedback, even a simple "looks good," so I know I'm heading in the right direction. Thanks!

I really like the poses, and obvious personalities in your work so far! So yeah, in short, looks good. <3 I think making the jacket a slightly lighter black would be okay? Lotsa peeps do stuff like that, and it would defs help it stand out more from the hair.

In general, I think changing up colors to better fit the composition is alright, and it's also something I've done with others' characters before, either for reasons like you have or just because I thought it'd look better xD You could also play around with different colored line art, like making the lines of her jacket that border her hair white or grey.
Regarding capturing the characters, honestly I think either Voxna looks good! If you prefer the first Voxna and second Demiex, if nothing else you could probably combine the two digitally into one piece, so you get the best of both drawings :3
It might also add to the humor if one of them perhaps had their hands out, something to show who was originally holding the ice cream cone. Maybe Voxna dropped it and Demiex refuses to show sympathy, or perhaps he lost his ice cream and is reacting in his own stoic way, however you imagine the scene! Having them interact with the ice cream in more diverse ways I think could help tie the piece together while also adding that extra layer to their characters and relationship.
But yeah, to me it looks like you're heading in a good direction! :3

Thorn Thank you! I'm glad it captures the personalities, that's always important to me. And I'm glad for your perspective on changing the color slightly. Twillie Hm, really took your suggestion of telling more of the ice cream's story here to heart, and came up with a few different scenarios real quickly. Still ambiguous, but even more dramatic. *** They both lost ice cream, whomp whomp. *** There's something funny to me about the fact of Demiex losing his ice cream, but Voxna being the one upset about it. Though there's also the theory of Demiex having an existential crisis about it, and that's funny too. Anyway, yeah, I've got all my sketches saved to the same file, just on different layers, so it wouldn't be too hard to just move them around and use my favorite version of each.

Here are some terribad scans to prove that I can indeed doodle on paper. (Daily animals more or less cleaned up and arranged more or less chronologically, doodled in 2 to 5 minutes each with more or less success on the corner of a small note paper.)
