[glow=red,2,300]The old manor on the outskirts of Tabloid Town has been abandoned for as long as anyone could remember. It has also looked exactly the same for as long as anyone could remember, showing no signs of weathering or age. The plants neither grow nor die. It is as though the abandoned residence has been isolated from the rest of the NTWF, preserved in its own bubble.
Recently, however, the old manor has been showing signs of habitation. At night, a light can be seen in the window of a room on the second floor in the west wing. Smoke has been seem rising from the chimney. The grass has begun to grow again. Faint classical music was heard coming from the gardens.
Just yesterday, a girl wearing a red cape was seen entering the manor. Two identical, dark-haired maids with stiff gaits are sent to escort her. If you were to follow her footsteps through the lobby, up the stairs and into the west wing, you would note her excitement, but at the same time, her tension.
The master of the house welcomes her too stiffly to be a friend. Yet she waits expectantly for some sign of the familiar.
"Rider, I've been waiting for this day for a long, long time."
Rider does not know how to respond. She sinks into a classy leather chair that dwarfs her.
"As you know, Rider, I have become very wealthy since I was last in this town." He smiles as if sharing a joke with the young pirate. Rider does not smile back. "I have been looking for one worthy of my legacy. Also, I have noticed the need for a bit of life to be restored to this old town. A bit of life even back in these old bones."
"Old?"
The stranger brushes Rider's question off as though she had never spoken. "There's only one thing that can bring the spirit of competition that I crave. A card tournament. It can be held in my rather expansive gardens."
Rider opens her mouth to say that these weren't the stranger's gardens, that they had been here before the stranger's arrival, but before the words escape her lips, she knows they are not true.
She settles by saying, "If you made holograms of the monsters..."
The stranger chuckles. "Nothing so cliched, Rider. Are you trying to get us sued? No, no, just a card tournament... though I must ask the participants not to seek me out. Surely you understand why."
Rider nodded. The reason had been evident the moment she had laid eyes on the stranger.
"You will be my voice in the outside world, Red Rider. You will find the spirit of competition among the populace and you will find for me the greatest NTWF TCG player in the land. Now, you are dismissed."
Rider lingered, wanting to ask more questions, but the oppressive stares of the maids ushered her out. The young pirate couldn't help but feel that the master of the house had an ulterior motive. Was it innocent... or sinister?
Either way, this would be a summer like no other.[/glow]
