Ah, yes. Any opening lines from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, as so many people have posted. I also like the opening line from Adams' other book, The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul: "It can hardly be a coincidence that no language on earth has ever produced the expression 'As pretty as an airport.'" I'm actually really mad that you posted this. I have been searching for both the exact quote and which particular book it was from since I first read this thread, and today I have found both... Only to find you've beat me to it! This remains the best opening I've ever read.

"The early summer sky was the color of cat vomit. Of course, Tally thought, you'd have to feed your cat only salmon-flavored cat food for a while, to get the pinks right. The scudding clouds did look a bit fishy, rippled into scales by a high-altitude wind. As the light faded, deep blue gaps of night peered through like an upside-down ocean, bottomless and cold." - Uglies by Scott Westerfeld Haha, that was what I was going to put here ^^ Such a unique hook, I must say XDD And it sets the mood and scenery perfectly :3 I also like "The future isn't what it used to be." Pendragon: The Pilgrims of Rayne, D.J. MacHale.

"Everything starts somewhere, although many physicists disagree."
Hogfather by Terry Pratchett - a brilliant author, although most people I meet have never even heard of him.
