Seventeen boards down from here, in the Guilds, we'll soon be starting our third Guild Wars RP.
What is Guild Wars?
It's a roleplay that involves all of the guilds. There's drama, action, romance *coughshipperscough*, silliness, and parodies of everything from popular music to anime to great works of literature. There is an overarching plotline, but even this is subject to change--being a group story, GW can change directions at any time. It can be confusing at times, but it's incredibly fun to play a part.
Wait, wait, you're moving too fast. What are the guilds?
The guilds, located here, are different organizations that exist on the planet NTWF, each of which with a unifying theme, outlook, and set of goals. The current guilds are: Pirates, Ninjas, Spacefleet, Knights, Mages, Mercenaries, and the newest guild, Steampunk. NTWFers may become members of one or more of these guilds and participate in guild activities and roleplays.
How long/big is Guild Wars?
Very big and verrrrrrrrry long. GW1 was 1763 posts (118 pages) long, and stretched out over nearly ten months--although most of it took place in about three months.
The original GW2 thread was lost, but through tremendous effort on the part of the RPers, it was entirely reconstructed save for about three insignificant posts. It lasted nine months, and had a total word count of about 707,000 words. For comparison, the first five Harry Potter books combined are 717,000 words long.
I don't have much/any experience roleplaying, can I still join?
GWs can be daunting at first, especially because they move extremely quickly when they start off. Beginning RPers may have difficulty keeping up. But don't let that discourage you. I had hardly any roleplaying experience when I joined GW2, but I managed to stayed active throughout the entire thing, and had a great time.
Still, it sounds like a pretty big commitment.
Only if you want it to be. You can post as much or as little as you want--just as long as you manage to keep up-to-date with the story. Guild Wars can move very quickly, and usually have at least 3-4 major scenes going on at once at any given time, plus a host of minor sub-plots that spring up and recede all the time. If you don't keep up, you can very easily get lost. On the other hand, no one will force you to stay active if you can't or don't want to keep playing. Real life comes first, and if you have to drop out for some reason or other, that's fine. In GW2, one of the primary characters had to leave because he was getting too busy with school to keep up. However, if you do want to keep playing, do your best to stay active. We aren't asking you to post three times a day, or even once a day. It's quality over quantity, but if you only post once every few weeks, you'll hardly make any impact at all.
I could go on giving advice, but this is really something you have to learn as you go. It's about the experience, after all.
This sounds fun, I think I may give it a try. What do I have to do to join?
First, join a guild. To do this, go to the Guilds board, and to the Center of Civilization sub-board. The Mages, Knights, Spacefleet, Ninjas, and Pirates all have stickied threads there; to apply for one of these, post on the relevant guild's thread using the application found on the first post. Once the guild leader accepts your application, you're in.
Note: Steampunk doesn't have a signup thread yet, so I think you would have to PM Tokala (Steampunk's leader) in order to join.I'm not entirely sure what to do for the Mercs, maybe someone could help me out here? Mercs now have a signup thread of their own as well.
Also note: you can join multiple guilds, but it isn't a good idea to spread yourself out too thin. Also, because of the old rivalry, you cannot be a member of both the Ninja and Pirate guilds at the same time.
Next, post your RP persona(e) on the General Guild Persona Thread, also found in the Center of Civilization, using the form in the first post. If you don't have an RP persona yet, you will have to make one--but that's a fun process in and of itself. Take a look at other personae within your guild for ideas.
If you want, it would be a good idea to look over the GW1 and GW2 summary threads (especially GW2's, even though it's unfinished, since some events from 2 will likely play a part in 3).
That's it, you're set and ready to start as soon as the RP begins. Note that it is probably going to start VERY soon--within a few days of this post--so if you want to join, you should do so soon.
Have fun, enjoy!
